The skybox is a smaller map outside the boundaries of the player map usually 3x smaller than the actual playing field which is designed to make the area/surroundings outside of the player map much larger than what it is.

The skybox often contains miniature buildings, apartment blocks or landscape in general which then is given the appearance to look like a normal sized object.

It's a trick of the game to save the game from spending resources on scenery you cant play in
