Oh i have to add.If you can't afford to go to a wedding, you can say no,but it is polite to still give money. Not such a big amount though(only like 20000 yen maybe should be enough). But i guess you save money with clothes, you don't pay for meal and drinks, hair, nails and whatever you do to yourself when you go to a wedding.AND,if someone came to your wedding, you HAVE to go to theirs.Or send someone from your family.Creepy ne?
Well Romanian weddings are very similar to japanese ones.We give money(the same amount even!!!)sometimes gifts(more if it's family or close friends,if not, just money). You can give what amount you can aford, but IT HAS to cover for your and your partner meal and drinks. So it's an "obligatory" amount(about 15000-20000 yen)wich will cover the meal and drinks. Then you add how much you can aford to that.We satarted to have pre wedding parties lately. No gift registration here.
No marriage is ever going to work if there is no respect between the man and the woman. If western guys marry japanese girls on a pretence that they will be submissive, there is no respect there. Good video and agree with you fully.
Nanda...o_o...sorry but you lose me when you hop languages xD. What does "toka" mean you use it a lot LOL. I hope you make it "super easy" for me to understand :P
I'd love to marry a japanese woman. Family? I can live without mine. Same with customs, language and everything except my integrity. What I won't do for love^^
Norwegian women are great, but there's one problem with them... they live in Norway. I don't want to live there. lol
how about this, japanese women are as sweet and submissive as the rest of the women everywhere... meaning, women are women. Some are submissive-- some not. Some are sweet-- some not.
And to add to my last (and lengthy) comment, I think it's kinda funny that many guys see Japanese women as being sweet/submissive.
I can agree on the sweet part when it comes to certain Japanese female friends I have. But submissive... hmm. To be honest, most of the Japanese girls/women I've met have seemed pretty strong-willed. Every Japanese girl I've met has been unique, so that's one reason I'm excited about meeting more people in Japan. Anyone else have similar feelings?
I think many people forget that every girl (and guy) is a little different. It's easy to just make a general assumption about people when you haven't been around them for a long time.
I, for one, am very interested in Japanese people (and yes, Japanese women :p) because I'm interested in Japanese culture and the eastern way of thinking.
I've only had a few Japanese friends, so I'm excited to go to Japan soon and really experience it myself, and to see what Japanese people are really like =]
Excuse me. Are you the same hiroko-San from Japanesepod101? I just stumble on to this video but you two look alike. If you are she, thank you I enjoy your videos and the information you've fought me c

I'm an American girl and I talk just like you with my Japanese boyfriend and friends (I live in Japan currently) always mixing the two languages together. It felt so natural to listen to you speak like that as well :P Thanks for the upload!
I'd rather think that marrying in Japan is much different from the Western world. Where else do you marry at a shrine in traditional garments, then have a big pompous celebration in a hotel, wearing a suit or wedding dress, faking a foreign ceremony, and then enter your name in the register of the husband's family? 面倒です!
In Germany both partners sign an official paper and many then have a church ceremony, often with very few people present, and that's it.

Asian's wedding ceremony are sometimes too complex to understand maybe XD but for me thats the best thing about asian..we let them know what we are best at!!.
I just attended a wedding at Zushi Marina's Rivera, and the only thing I found to be different, which isn't really saying much, is that parents' of the couple being married will walk around, chat and fill your glass to the rim with beer and or wine. I am told it custom for them, or the host, to serve the alcohol and for me not to do it myself. 11 years and counting....

This is an EXCELLENT video. Please don't bother with English, though. Your diction and cadence is so excellent, so it's great practice for me. By the way, I perform weddings in Japan. It's a really fun, memorable business. I wasn't an excellent BOKUSHI, but I performed about 100 ceremonies in a year. One time I said the wrong name--the fax blurred the "MO" and "SHI" character, so the bride's name was wrong. We were mortified. Still, the couple stood there and let me say it wrong.
I confirm: Japanese girls are NOT submissive. But who wants a submissive girl? We no longer live in Tokugawa Japan. But unlike most Western girls they are rather polite, feminine and full of skills. Your video didn't mention the use of TELEGRAMS by those who cannot attend.
Konnichiwa Hiroki. I am wondering about the cost of weddings in Japan. I find it extremely expensive. Here in northern Europe, the cost falls on the bride and groom, so unless you're wealthy, weddings will never be as expensive as in Japan. So does the cost in Japan fall on the bride and groom also? Young people never seem to have much money. Or is there a tradition for the parents of either the bride or groom to pay for some or all of it?
@arby22207 I disagree. When Hiroko switches over to English, her diction and accent is very natural. She is not speaking the typical katakana-ized Janglish you are talking about. There is a slight accent, but nearly undetectable.
I do wish she wouldn't interlace the languages, though. I want to hear it all in Japanese.
I've been into Japanese culture/trends for the last ten years. I've studied the language (and hundreds of kanji) in the last 5 years.
I'm just becoming another japanophile.... like many of my friends.
Watching your vids Hiroko is actually depressing for me. I figure I'm just another stupid foreigner with Japan in his mind and nothing but. It's like I'm betraying the culture I was born into (Filipino culture). And I think I should cut my interest with anything Japanese and remain neutral.
Lol. It amusingly frustrates me the way Hiroko jumps in and out of English and Japanese. I speak both, but I'm laughing and banging my head at the same time as I listen to this. XD
Just so you know. You have viewers from Singapore. Hahaha. Good Job. It's great learning your culture from youtube. I will try to pick up a bit of jap so I can understand your vid. But thanks for the english translation. It really helps!
I've heard quite a lot of guys have affairs in Japan? I know everyone does in the world lol. But anyways I was watching 嵐の宿題くん and a woman on there said that she would be ok with her guy having an affair as long as he didn't lie about it. Then 二宮 added that he would be ok as long as he didn't have to see it.
For me if I found out my partner was having an affair i'd be devastated! How about you?
i watched this video a few days ago, and today was prom (didnt go i think its a waste of money) but it got me thinking....do japanese have prom at high school or something like it? just wondering
The Language Barrier only makes it more interestingと思う。俺はブラジル人なのに英語も日本語も分かるけど、I can't speak or write it as skillfully as I can understand it. Still, I love when you make these videos of you mixing both languages. It makes me feel rewarded for understanding them both, それはsomewhatカッコいいな。w
Hiroko, I speak only very little Japanese and I love how you mostly speak Japanese in this video, and then transition between the two languages. It really helps me to get used to the fast-paced talking. Also thank you for being honest and real about your topics in your videos, it's nice to get a real Japanese girl's perspective on things. :)
I think some of you need to kinda back off on how Hiroko does her videos I personally have no problem with her doing half Japanese and half English. If it annoys you so bad then don't watch her videos. This is her channel and she can do what she wants. Give her some respect on here.
I also decided for the wedding, I didn't want to do it in Japan at a 結婚工場. We did a party in Japan at a big Irish pub, no charge for the booking, free entry and good times!
And yes, Japanese guys call their wives "kami-san" for a good reason... :)
@Hikosaemon Hahahahahaha I laughed so hard, and I've been waiting for you to comment!! 結婚工場ね~wthe average (not expensive ones) wedding cost is 3-4million JPY. My dream wedding is on top of the mountain, if there's a lil cave, would be Perfect!!超感動的!but 大変for guests!
I'm an American in a relationship with a Japanese girl. It takes a lot of patience and hard work to deal with the language and cultural barriers. But if you are both willing to put in the time and effort, it is very worth while if you 2 get along well. ^^ For my GF and I, it makes it a lot more worthwhile. ^^ And it really makes you appreciate them and what they do for you more. But keep in mind, you have tp deal with the parents thing... Thats probably one of the biggest challenges IMO
Hi Hiroko - you probably get asked this alot but....what was your method of perfecting your English accent? I know someone with great vocab - but no confidence in the accent....any advice?
ps - you're spot on about the misconception of j-girls hehe
i dont know how you can switch back and forth between languages so fast and almost as if you dont know you are doing it... it just flows... its smooth... very interesting vid. international marriages can bring forth many unique challenges that people often dont realize in advance.. even a "normal" marriage (whats that lol?) is hard enough already.... great vid =)
If I marry Japanese woman I don't care ... what language MY ( our) children going to speak ..I think they going to be bilingual ... But u r right ...communication is the best solution for life togheter .. so talk to woman is very importante :)
Btw, I like listening to you speak in Japanese. You speak the way I'd like to speak, if that makes sense. I'm not too good at adding in the little bits and pieces that kind of add personality and emotion to speaking but I understand them and I think that you use ones that I would use if I were Japanese. :)
If someone thinks all Japanese women are submissive then they should watch Victor's videos. There's one where he's annoying his wife and she doesn't sound submissive at all!! lol
LOL @ 6:46, Maybe you need to think some more...lol. I wonder what divorce is like in Japan? I have a friend from the Philippines and he told me to never get married there because there is no divorce, ever! A little scary to me as I am divorced...lol.
@MrMax89 where did you hear that? people get divorced in Japan probably more then you think they do. custom is though the woman can't remarry for like 6 months I believe but the man can remarry right away. Yes it's kinda sexist but...yeah that's how it is.
Why do you say so much in Japanese=P? It isn't that I mind, if it's easier for you, then by all means, go ahead. We (I) understand 100% what you're saying, it's just a bit odd, 'cause you only say the easy stuff in Japanese=P Not complaining, just curious.
@HIROKOCHANNEL That, and I am an English viewer who is learning Japanese, so it's always nice for people like myself to hear some natural Japanese to learn from :)
Great video, but you should actually say the American part in Japanese and the Japanese part in English as we mostly know more about ourselves than the other's.
how are u..u hiroko chan we miss you. kekon well people come people go. ment to be then its ment be. also I love my japanese girl friend. awsome video thanks
That's very interesting. My home country is France, I moved to America when I was eight, about five years ago. We've gone to weddings in France for our friends and families. I think the two differences that I can see most are that their wedding night is most times not being intimat.
This isn't so common any more since the bride and groom want more "modern" wedding, or that could just be my stubborn cousins, but French families and friends will go under window ( mado) at house couple is staying at and bang pots and pans all night and groom will offer us a drink!!!
Well. women changed a lot, for me it's hard to find a realy nice girl, it doesn't matter where you are, Brazil, USA, Europe or Asia.
I just wish I can find a girl that has family values, this is kinda hard to find nowadays. I'm a guy that try to be some1 that worth a marriage, I do my best for that so I want a girl that think something like this too.
Every where in the world people are nice and sweet. So.. I don't agree on you saying that. Because it's sound foolish. What i do agree on is submissive.. I don't know where the image came from. But I don't judge that easily. But about the sweet and nice? With all due respect, but Who are you to tell the viewers that Japanese girls aren't sweet and nice? Nobody is saying that they are ALL sweet and nice, but there are allways nice and/or sweet people EVERYwhere..
I just noticed that you speak Japanglish in your videos. You switch often between English and Japanese. Sadly, it took a friend to point this out since I pretty much understand and can follow your line of thought.
Hiroko this was so sweet and funny. I do think that most European/American men have an idealized version of Japan in their minds (at least the ones intrested in going / living there). But once you're actually faced with "Japan reality" sort of speak, I think you quickly come to the realization that although customs are diffrent, westernized countries do share alot of things. Communication in any relationship is something to work at constantly, but as you mentioned in the video; needed everywhere
I understand what goes on this video completely. I have seen Japanese girls on a PenPals website where most have wrote on their request or description saying "If you want me to be a friend just because you want to have 'blah blah blah (either friend or a girlfriend) who are Japanese girls, then DO NOT BOTHER talking to me." I have seen this case happened before and so for anyone else who watches this video, listen to Hiroko - "Watch out!". Thanks for informing for everyone else :-)
I came to Japan, and marriage was the last thing on my mind. Somehow I ended up getting married here anyway...Now been married for 18 years... and it has been 18 years of gaman! ガマンできない外国人、結婚しないで!
there aren't any boundaries in behavior, girls, boys or whatever from all races and cultures, can range from bitchy to sweet to whatever, that is what I think
and 愛の告白 xD I love you hiroko <3 internet crush ftw xD
btw what about making 花み type of video ? xD perfect time to do that ^^
I don't like to put pressure on people, so at my wedding (in two weeks' time!!) we have asked for no gifts. We already have a house together, and all the things we need.
I find that stag/hen night pressures are high, too... travelling to New York for the weekend or so on. Again, I don't like to put that pressure on people.
This is a great video. I love your expression at the end if people imagine Japanese girls are sweet/submissive. It says a lot more than any words could!
Hmmmm, 300 dollars to go to a wedding. I can see weddings being a little unpopular in Japan. Americans complain enough about having to go to weddings even without having to pay. Most people can get away with giving a bottle of wine here.
I had a relationship with a Japanese girl and I would say they are not as shy as most westerners think. I have noticed that most Japanese girls, regardless of whether they date a Japanese guy or Foreign guy, hardly ever say what they are really thinking. We did not have a language barrier since we spoke only in Japanese, but I was raised in USA so my opinions concerning morals and society were different to hers. We often argued as to who was right.. lol 隠された本性が明かすって感じ
The hardest thing when making a video such as this one is that i know what I'm saying is only a very tiny part of the "fact" and i need to keep it short so people won't get bored watching, and entertaining and agreeing with everyone is simply impossible, so bear with me! :D
@HIROKOCHANNEL well as a man that's moving to Japan I hope their not submissive. That sounds boring to me. I don't think they are though. How can I grow as a person if I am with a woman agrees with everything I say. By the way Hiroko, How do you feel when someone says that. I am sure you realize that idea about Japanese women is really old. It seems when a westerner tries to get that information in a vacuum they get it wherever.
For personal reasons, I already know that if I meet and marry a Japanese woman that I would like to do it in Japan. Seen lots of videos already about this topic, and I still don't quite honestly know where I would start with a Japanese wedding. Makes me nervous and excited though just thinking about it lol
Weird... I understood part of what you said in Japanese... Which is weird because I still don't know Japanese that well. I guess that watching all that anime is starting to paid up. In France, the invited also give money as a gift to the couple. It's not an obligation, yet everyone does it. I have been invited for 4 weddings this year already. Foreigners are a little more open about their feelings and will have no problems listening to the feeling of others, yet we are not prince charming.
Marriage is never easy no matter the nationalities, but not that hard either, the first 2 years are the hardest, as you both learn to cooperate. You don't really need to be a millionaires to visit your partners home, we certainly aren't & Fumi's been home 13 times in the last 12 years...lol @ Japanese girls being subbmissive, once the honeymoon period wears off, you soon learn the things that annoy them ; ) 11th year wedding anniversary for us in 10 days.
I think the best way to do the whole getting married thing is to go abord do it in the honey moon all in one i can't a commadate my whole family my gran had 10 kids and each of those kids had atleast 2 to 4 each and thats just my mums side. i know i laugh when people think japanese girls are submisive i call my freind princess is a sarcastic way cause she dead bossey the whole cute thing is a act bewere.
Ps. I got my idea's about japanese girls from Ôdishon and Higurashi no naku koro ni.
Oh...so...I've been to an Indian wedding .......twice! First one was way back when I was like 4 years old and my aunt was getting married. And the other one was about 2 years back. I remember some things from the one when I was 4 years old...but I have a clearer vision of the one 2 years back =). Indian marriages...are honestly all party. ALL PARTY. I mean they have many religious ceremonies and so on where the dad and mom comes to the bride and give blessings to the son. You can watch if u like
(continued) but it's absolutely not necessary...you can still go on partying while they are being blessed in the middle of the place where the party is being held. Infinite tea is served, sweets are served. Then they start doing the actual initiation where they sort of put the wife on a platform, pick her up while on the platform and circle her around the husband while she's wearing a veil. People start chanting and so on. I kept drinking tea =/...but I still enjoyed! =)
But it's still not over. I wake up the next morning and in my room I was staying...there were 20 people or so surrounding me crying and sobbing. Just when I thought that someone died tragically...turns out the sad thing was...that the wife is leaving. My aunt was leaving to go to the husband's (now my uncle) house. Which was...just 30 miles away? It was not like my parents from India to the U.S. haha. But wow there were tears. We gave more blessings then said goodbye!

I want to hear it all in Japanese.
kc7fys 1 year ago

XD

Hiroko, I speak only very little Japanese and I love how you mostly speak Japanese in this video, and then transition between the two languages. It really helps me to get used to the fast-paced talking. Also thank you for being honest and real about your topics in your videos, it's nice to get a real Japanese girl's perspective on things. :)

When I got married I hated 半返し・・・超~~~~~~~面倒くさい!
I also decided for the wedding, I didn't want to do it in Japan at a 結婚工場. We did a party in Japan at a big Irish pub, no charge for the booking, free entry and good times!
And yes, Japanese guys call their wives "kami-san" for a good reason... :)

I dont think of getting a Japanese girl for sweet, nice, and submissive.
American girls I find want the perfect guy image and are picky.
I heard Japanese girls are not real picky and can be more accepting.
If I cannot find American girl then I hope in Japan to have better luck.
She dose not have to be Japanese. She can be part or full American.
If it come to not finding a girl in Japan then I could have a real problem with myself and not girls.

@MrMax89 where did you hear that? people get divorced in Japan probably more then you think they do. custom is though the woman can't remarry for like 6 months I believe but the man can remarry right away. Yes it's kinda sexist but...yeah that's how it is.

That's very interesting. My home country is France, I moved to America when I was eight, about five years ago. We've gone to weddings in France for our friends and families. I think the two differences that I can see most are that their wedding night is most times not being intimat.

But I don't judge that easily. But about the sweet and nice? With all due respect, but Who are you to tell the viewers that Japanese girls aren't sweet and nice?
