Carl Probyn was not the best stepfather an Jaycee's idea that he didn't care for her doesn't come from nowhere. But he has been pretty misunderstood. He was scared to death when she got kidnapped, you can hear it in the 911 call even. He was the one that tried to go after the car. He did care for her a lot and wanted her back home. He just didn't really know how to be a step-dad and got off to a rocky start with Jaycee and didn't know how to really fix it.
I can't believe that man told himself this was ok but I REALLY can't believe that woman! She had plenty of opportunities to go to the police and set Jaycee free and she never did. She never even tried. Somebody who does that to a child is not worth protecting. Let them hate you. It's not worth hurting an innocent child.
I'm reading this book right now... And the way she described her step dad it doesn't seem like he was a nice man. Although I wouldn't really know. But still making her eat in a bathroom in front of a mirror.?? Fucked up!
I am sick and tired of the attitude towards Jaycee's stepfather. Has everyone forgotten his frantic 911 call and how he passed several lie detector tests? Besides, Jaycee Dugard was age eleven when she was kidnapped by creepy Phil. She was naive too, as she admits at the time.
Lets start with memory. Jaycee was eleven when she was kidnapped and now she is thirty one. It seems impossible to remember things so vividly and accuratly 20 years back
@VoldyTwilight2 Because everything that happened to her before was vivid....she got kidnap and raped...It is not surprise to know she still remember it. Plus, this woman deserves al lthe fortune and happy life. She gone through too much. If you have a heart, you won't think different about her.
he was so mean to his step daughter i am reading the memoir and i did not like this guy one bit he seem to be the evil step father from hell and treated her horrible at every chance he got plus it was his idea for her to walk home alone from school a 11 year old so young to be walking home from school at that age i bet if she was his biological daughter he would of driven her to school every day anyway the book is a must read so sad my heart goes out to Jaycee and her beautiful mother.
@wowso4 she would take a school bus not walk to school :S but yeah she does say he didn't like her or atleast that's how he would act around her but is not like he would beat her up so I think calling him "the evil step father from hell" it's a lil too much.
@wowso4 you need to get your facts straight. she walked to school as normal. The mother and stepather both were parenting her, dont forget about that. The Garridos were predators, it could have been anyone. IF you were him, trying to save her but couldn't, and people were then pointing their fingers at you and trying to put you in jail, i would be ticked too. you guys have no right to judge!
@wowso4 Her memoir is biased. She was Jelous that he was getting between her and her mother. Also he would cycle with her to the bus stop so she didn't have to walk all the way there on her own. Hence how he saw her kidnap and told the police what the car looked like. He stuck by Jaycee's mother went she was acting like a nutcase, he did all he could with news appeals and he agreed to several police interviews and lie detectors. The man did his best and deserves some praise.
yeah, i agree with you karasilly. just read the book too. first it looks like his step father is a good man, but i changed my mind in the very beginning of the book
Ive read Jaycees book that SHE wrote and she NEVER liked Carl, she said so many many times, he would treat her badly and tried to tear her away from her mother
That poor guy(what he) and the entire family have been through just makes me sick to my stomach. I hope Jaycee and her children can begin to live a normal life and learn to trust people.
@DimeraFan28 It's crazy how you said this. because in jace book about her captivity she wrote that she did not have a good relashionship with him. and she has not talked to him since she has been out and she likes it this way. She also said he treated her bad. that he wanted her to walk to school alone and her mom did not like that. so when the mom whould leave for work he would tell jace to go to school walking. even tho he knew that the mom did not like this.
@SpcE4Wife oh please there's a lot of 11 year old that defanitly don't want there parents walking them to school. How was he supposed to know. Yes maybe he was a jerk, but you can't blam him for what happened to Jaycee no 11 year old wants to be walked to school by there father aspecially if you can't stand them.
@DimeraFan28 And he could of because Carl was home that morning. However, Jaycee's memoir reveals that she called out for him, looked for him inside and outside the home and he was nowhere to be found. She looked for his van, but it was not there. So I can only presume Carl was hiding and avoiding her. If this is true, it would be TO AVOID WALKING HER TO THE STOP AND AVOID HAVING TO MAKE EXCUSE UP NOT TO. BECAUSE I BELIEVE HE SET IT UP AND/OR IN COLLUSION. TOO EASY, SMELLS SO ROTTEN.
I agree with that cop, "hes a pervert, they should have noutered him in prison"

Watching him is a joke. After reading the book- I don't really think it is appropriate to interview him for an accurate story.
