I might be wrong, everyone let me know what you think, but Eddie plays the start of his solo like this: slide into string 4 fret 9, play notes s 2 f 9, s 3 f 9, s 4 f 9 (EMajor), slide up s2 f14, s3 f14, s4 f14 (AMajor), slide up s2 f16, s3 f16, s4 f16, s2 f16 (BMajor) --> resolving to the EMajor Triad, add F#
on 1st string 12 16 19 12 16 12 14, play the F# on the first string, not the second. Watch him in concert vids. He got the pattern from a piano exercise before learning guitar.
@EMC2BOOM No. I just watched the US Festival footage, his middle finger is nowhere near 14th fret. It's 1st finger, 12th fret. Second finger, 16th fret, and pinky, 19th fret. It's unnatural to play that line on one string. It's totally natural and easier to play it on 2 strings. If I'm wrong, I swear to God I'd admit it, but I just watched the clip and I see him using two strings. At least we agree on one thing; the shit ain't tapped.
Very good and very cool! All I read with videos like this is how to play, HAVE THE PHASER and DELAY. Everyone seems to miss that learning Eddie licks, guitar playing sort of dies. Where are players doing their own shit! Who's today's guitar masters? Let me hear your solos! Can you solo? Do you know why you play the notes you play? Eddie does. So let's explore something new! Eddie's great because he's original. I don't see that in any of the videos. Everyone's a Xerox Machine! Let's be musicians!
@Rhythmicsolo I'm playing a guitar with Seymour Duncan 59's or a Chinese rip off. The amp side of things was Pod XT Live played through power amp section of of ampeg ss140c, made in the late 80's Solid state. Cabinet was old ass Hughes and Kettner.
If you're gonna EVH tone, just get the new 5150III head and the mxr EVH Paser, a bodd dd2 digital delay pedal and a stomp box reverb. That's really all you need. I just make do with what i have.
@DougFCKNSteele sorry I compltely disagree. the tone is not in the equipment, the sound is in your hands and your individual technique. You don't need to spend thousands of pounds on equipment. Eddie used Marshall amps, humbuckers and an ordinary MXR phaser. Just cos your gear looks like his doesn't mean you'll sound like him! I'm not having a go, your video is excellent, but just pointing out a few fundamental basics.
@blueleadguitar I'm just telling people what I use, nothing more. That ampeg head I bought in 1987 for $500. The guitar parts were bought online and assembled after the paint job. I'm not even saying the tone is spot on. I'm saying "oi, with my line 6 X3 Live I drummed this shit up in 5 minutes. It may not be perfect, but at least it's in the ballpark."
@DougFCKNSteele Thanks for your reply, and really, no offence was intended. I was just replying to your quote 'If you're gonna EVH tone, just get the new 5150III head and the mxr EVH Paser, a bodd dd2 digital delay pedal and a stomp box reverb. That's really all you need. I just make do with what i have'
Don't get me wrong, what you use sounds excellent, I've been playing 36 years and just wanted to point out to any beginners watching your vid they don't need lots of cash to get that sound
BTW Kick Ass! Nice tone and touch. Many great guitarists play the notes with the speed, but do not incorperate the feel. Almost every time Morse talks about playing the word feel or feeling comes out. That is why his triple meter licks sound better even if he plays them slower than other guitarists.
I am seeing comments about playing certian notes here or there. Playing the correct pitch is just the beginning. Each string has its own sound. I would watch eddie and copy what he does. By simply playing the same note, you leave out the most inherient beauties of the gtr.
@paulandlesson You are correct. I watched Eddie and copied what he does. I do it exactly the way he does it. I'm sick of defending myself to ear dead dip shits, like our Rockster friend.
dude your are amazing! the only VH songs i can do are aint talkin bout love, jump, panama all the rest i just play the main riffs and thats it (N) yeah i know i suck! haha. nice job man :D
Real good job Doug, and great camera work/angle as well. So many guys (Ok, well, some I should say) have the talent, and decide to post a how to video...only to negate any benefit to the unwashed masses due to BAD camera work. How good is it to watch Eddie Himself play....filmed from 12 feet away? No B.S. extra yak-yak, good playing, great camera work... Thanks man. Great lesson

D. Steele. At first you kinda rubbed me the wrong way but know I understand that you are probably just a very intense person and definitely great guitar player. You crack me up dude. Looks like God blessed you with a good reach too. Not me.
@levicash Yeah, I unfortunately have that talent of either people laughing or people saying I'm abrasive, I'm just intense when it comes to doing the VH shit justice, as there are plenty of clowns on here who fuck it up oh so badly, I guess i shouldn't take other people's playing persoanlly, but it does get to me.
your a beastly player man ive learned to have that FUCKIN BOOGIE when i play im the one and ive seen the charvel star that u have it looks great also does it have a floyd on it?
Congrats! Most people overlooks the Holdsworth influence on EVH´s music. BEAT IT and a lot of other solos had this tipe of strecth thing but people thinks that all of EVH´s intervallic stuff is made via tapping. 5 stars to you!!
Holdsworth is insane. I bought his REH vid back in the day, my god. "Zone" will just about put any guitar player in is place, and that's below Alan, ha ha..
I could have sworn that at 1:03 of your clip Eddie is tapping that note on fret 16 of the 3rd string instead of string 2? Also at 1:28 I also think I've seen him in clips overexaggerate the bend by just staying on fret 15, and not going back and forth between fret 12 of string 1, and fret 17 of string 2.
Nice man, I'm jealous. I can't play the whole thing as fast as Eddie yet. My favorite part of the solo is :54 - about 1:00. I also love your tone. Are you playing through an EVH amp?
Solid performance, your obviously a talented player...but the word "Lesson" in the title of this vid is a bit misleading, as you gave NO verbal instruction on how to play this solo. I'm sure the "slow" version helped some folks, but lessons usually consist of more than just "watch me play...now YOU do it". I couldn't always determine what fret or string you were hitting with less than ideal lighting conditions, and the shadow from the brim of your hat falling on the neck .
Good job on the solo and for putting up this vid. You go for a sound similar to me as in having some delay for solos to make em sound more full. Atta Boy Doug.. Good Job. I don't have as much time, these days to figuire all the licks like in the 80's.Was missing some notes, The solo is bang on...

yeah, 'tween 15-20 years old they were top of my listening list. First album still ranks as my fave debut of all time. Saw 'em in Birmingham(England) in 1980. Eddie was just awesome. He was still being innovative as far as Fair Warning i reckon..
1984 went Diamond for a reason. It has their best set of songs. I really don't like the song I'll Wait, but other than that EVERY song on that album is great. Top Jimmy is my favorite song on that album.
Thats true, because in many cases the best songs by artists arent necessarilly their best songs OR albums. For example "This Was" by Jethro Tull is my favorite Jethro Tull album. Since it is more english blues, you don't hear it mentioned in the same breath as their more progressive rock albums Aqualung, Benefit, Thick as Brick. I just love 1984 because i used to listen to it as a kid in my basement when i would play Nintendo 64. Front and back....those were the days
oh yeah, and that raucous interval lick early on, even being tall and with long fingers i still have to tap the bastard. i need to work on that. and you do 9 finger slides right afterwards..maybe that's where i sometimes enter the next part of the solo too early right after the dive bomb..will mess up timing. i've been doing six. first learned this by ear, so a little hard to re-train old habits. boss vids..tank.
tank here, doug..lol. man, your vids sure been helping to get me thru these doldrum post-divorce weekends, so thanks for that. i've been playing this solo forever, but have never been satisfied with my playing between roughly :53-:56 on your vid. it's that great lick that starts on the high e-string right after the double-stop. it leads into that descending run in e. anyway, i had one of those glorious 'aha' moments. :-)
I could learn off this if I had to. It's slowed down. I'm not gonna stop and say every fucking note that's being played. Read the other comments, people are learning plenty.
Yo MAN! THANK YOU! (Ive been sittin here bout half the night--HAHA!) try'n to figure this BITCH out (even w/ the tabliture) and this helps ALOT!! You got it down, bro. Keep jamm'n! Thank God for youtube.
Great playing! You have about the sickest chops of anyone I have seen on Youtube, plus a good vibrato which for some reason is rare these days. Keep rippin :)
Hey rockman, I have arthritis in my knuckles so the stretches are difficult for me too. I recommend Ibanez RG or RS series. The fretboard isn't as wide and the scale length is shorter than a Fender's, which are brutal on my hands!
Check my evh out man :)

Atta Boy Doug.. Good Job. I don't have as much time, these days to figuire all the licks like in the 80's.Was missing some notes, The solo is bang on...
2000boxter 3 years ago
Thanks. I've probably heard the solo about a million times since 81..

thats fuckin brilliant Doug!!
Well explained and an awesome tone...My favourite Eddie solo.
rwlane 3 years ago
Thanks dude, as a teenager, I listened to it on stop for hours on end. All 4 albums actually..Diver Down had a few good songs, 1984 had even less.
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
yeah, 'tween 15-20 years old they were top of my listening list. First album still ranks as my fave debut of all time. Saw 'em in Birmingham(England) in 1980. Eddie was just awesome. He was still being innovative as far as Fair Warning i reckon..
rwlane 3 years ago
1984 went Diamond for a reason. It has their best set of songs. I really don't like the song I'll Wait, but other than that EVERY song on that album is great. Top Jimmy is my favorite song on that album.
marcusp3388 2 years ago
Popular does not mean better. I loike the first four cd's and that's it, thanks. If I wanted synth in my rock, I'll listen to Def Leppard.
DougFCKNSteele 2 years ago
Thats true, because in many cases the best songs by artists arent necessarilly their best songs OR albums. For example "This Was" by Jethro Tull is my favorite Jethro Tull album. Since it is more english blues, you don't hear it mentioned in the same breath as their more progressive rock albums Aqualung, Benefit, Thick as Brick. I just love 1984 because i used to listen to it as a kid in my basement when i would play Nintendo 64. Front and back....those were the days
marcusp3388 2 years ago
Thats the truth!...There are so many bands you could listen if you enjoy synth. I listen to halen for tunes like the above. Good video by the way

what happened to the video?
Rockmanzzzz 3 years ago
I have no fucking clue.
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
oh yeah, and that raucous interval lick early on, even being tall and with long fingers i still have to tap the bastard. i need to work on that. and you do 9 finger slides right afterwards..maybe that's where i sometimes enter the next part of the solo too early right after the dive bomb..will mess up timing. i've been doing six. first learned this by ear, so a little hard to re-train old habits. boss vids..tank.
bigchillcar 3 years ago
tank here, doug..lol. man, your vids sure been helping to get me thru these doldrum post-divorce weekends, so thanks for that. i've been playing this solo forever, but have never been satisfied with my playing between roughly :53-:56 on your vid. it's that great lick that starts on the high e-string right after the double-stop. it leads into that descending run in e. anyway, i had one of those glorious 'aha' moments. :-)
bigchillcar 3 years ago
i'm gonna go try it out shortly. maybe i'll even don the white wet suit again and post a vid response. you're good people..keeo it up! tank.
bigchillcar 3 years ago
i can do the solo, but its not as complicated as this since im only 14 and my fingers arent long enuff or fast enuff to catch all of it.
nicely done :)

Cool, you'll get there. Takes time and patience. keep coming back to it every few months.

You need to tilt the guitar and get right under it. It can be done, but man, it's a bitch..
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
Yeah, I try it, watch my vids, I have short fingers, I know the fingering, if you don't mind I wanna leave a Little Dreamer responce......GW

Ta. It's slow enough to grasp, ya know?
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
Any chance you could do a quick lesson of the divebombs? They are dead on.
goeatadick11 3 years ago
I could probably do that here. Flick the low E or A string with your left hand, grab the bar, and head for Rumble City, baby.
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
Just how i like lessons. L's like your best mate is showing you the solo.

I built that guitar - the only thing (by sheer coincidence) made by Fender is the body. US$1500 if anyone's interested.

Tapping with slide, second string frets 12-15 you do the thrill and the tap-slide must be 17 and sliding up i believe...

Great playing! You have about the sickest chops of anyone I have seen on Youtube, plus a good vibrato which for some reason is rare these days. Keep rippin :)

Great playing. Could you slow it down a little especially when you are doing those big stretches? I think I got it but I am not totally sure.
Rockmanzzzz 3 years ago
ha ha, you'll be waiting a loooooong time. I won't be doing any VH lessons until:
My bumblebee is built.
I use that guitar again.
But yes, full explanations when that happens..
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
Thanks. I look forward to it.
Also, can you recommend a good shred guitar that would help me out with those big stretches?
I have smaller hands and it really pushes my limit.
Rockmanzzzz 3 years ago
Ibanez, anything Ibanez.
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
Hey rockman, I have arthritis in my knuckles so the stretches are difficult for me too. I recommend Ibanez RG or RS series. The fretboard isn't as wide and the scale length is shorter than a Fender's, which are brutal on my hands!
Check 'em out.
