I first heard this song as an instrumental version on the 1986 TV movie, Christmas Eve starring Loretta Young. It is the theme to the movie, so I do not know if that is its first appearance.

This song was composed by the great Johnny Mandel (The Mash Theme, The Shadow of Your Smile, Emily, etc.). Marilyn and Alan Bergman wrote the wonderful lyrics: "We'll spend the day exchanging kisses. Smile and say, What a Christmas this is!" Johnny scored the arrangement, too. He has no peer when it comes to scoring for strings in this style. He's still the best there is.
