I'm not sure what style of martial arts you are in, I take American Open Style. When you do your side kick, Isn't your downward blocking arm supposed to go back into it's chamber?
@ItchyZebra This is Kempo karate. Every style has slight differences - when doing this kata we keep the downward blocking arm out. Chalk it up to a difference in style...
This is actually the third kata that we learn - the first is 27 movements, then takiyoko shodan, then this one.
It's a good practice to learn the difference between styles - each style has it's benefits and drawbacks. Good to learn from all of them, as they all have wisdom. :)
And the kata "Kihon" or "tiykoku shodan" (I'm not sure how to spell it) Is the first kata in all styles of karate, some sensie don't teach it because they feel it's "too basic" lol
I wasn't being literal lol I just wondered what it is, I'm one of those people who likes to spot the difference between styles and compare them with my own lol.
Officially it's Kempo. Having said that, the kata might appear in other styles too. Everybody does their stance slightly different - and people do their stance different at different times, so we shouldn't be so literal about our stances. :)

Or you could learn your own style inside out, back to front and side ways and become like mr miyagi.... Lol

Oh yea, this kata is not in shotokan

And shotokan focuses mainly on wide (which might look extremely low) which is why I picked out that this is slightly lower in surprise
