  • Good video; jmo but Australian committment to build more subs, (think it is in South Australia where the shipyard is) is a good call.

Maybe even base the entire fleet around submarines.....

  • nice boat.

  • I feel proud that we built them completely by ourselves, but despite all the problems it faced, during excerises back nearly a decade ago with the US, in one of them it surface right next to a US carrier, and their commander was going apeshit!

But really I think the best option is 6 Virginia class submarines & 6 Seawolf Class, but since we have no nuclear weapons, which i hope we will have some evetually, they best be fitted for cruise missiles! :D

  • the boat just flew past the sub............ that says something

  • yeh i wanna work on one of them wen i turn 17 trs old

  • I've been on a tour of the colins class at a gardan island naval demonstation back in perth a while ago, they let in cilvilans to the island, opened it up let people tour the ships, hold guns and check out the submarines also a fighter jet pass by 2 F/A - 18 hornets.

  • I see Ohio class subs out my front window, so this sub looked kind of little.

  • Yes, the Ohio class would seem bigger because they are, but one of them probably cost more than the 6 Collins Class.

One Ohio Class crew could probably crew 3 Collins Class.

Collins Class: Displacement: 3,051 tonnes Length: 77.42 meters 7.8 meters

Ohio Class: Displacement: 16,764 tonnes Length: 170 meters Beam: 13 meters

Ohio Class Crew: 15 officers, 140 enlisted

Collins Class Crew: Originally 42 (plus up to 12 trainees) Increased to 58 in 2009

  • You forgot about the 24 Trident II SLBMs, and their 192 nuclear warheads.

  • Australia doesnt have nuclear weapons but does have vegemite, something that will strike fear in to the hearts of most non Australians!

  • @constev everyone who comes to australia shits themself over vegemite, our ADF is for the purpose of defending australia, nukes are no needed to defend :S

  • Cant wait for a future sub, Will have un-manned mini subs so we can spot targets with out putting the"mother ship" in danger and attack them from greater ranges, Possibly have un-manned sub launched aerial vehicles, Improved mines and sonar etc, and, Stronger sub itself able to withstand attacks from the best anti-sub weapons mmm every submariners wet dream xD

  • @69sexdemon69 unmanned? most unlikely, definetly midget, but fit for transporting special forces units and for exploration

  • you guys paying out collins class submarines obviously have no idea about the results of the war games off the hawaiin coast every year

  • The Collins class did start out as an ugly duckling but grew into swans as Rimpac and other exercises have shown.

When the Collins class was built in Australia they were a new design so problems were expected.

I only wonder why they didn't build one, get it right then build the rest right from the start!!

  • @constev I couldn't agree more. Yesterday I was talking to friedn and said: "The collins class submarines are really cool, it's just a shame they DON"T WORK!"

  • @blakerook right on.

  • @blakerook ahhhhhh i remember that, the US commanders were shocked!

  • With military projects, You expect them to go over budget, By hundreds of millions, If not more, The entire Collins class project went just AU$40 Million over budget, that's including the fast track program. Try using up to date facts and figures, Not ones from the early/mid 1990's =) Cheers

  • Lets not forget here, The ASC (Australian Submarine Corporation) is a mjor problem, Considering its been found much of there work force at this time is under trained and under experienced, Poor leadership there as well Makes for maintaining the Collins submarines a major problem, That is why so few of the Collins are in service oh and also that there just isn't enough crews to man all the boats, Oh and by end of this year there will be 4 Collins in service.. And there not money waster,

  • A US company failed to deliver the combat system on time, and only managed to deliver it piece meal, Wasnt until the late 1990's that they had a full combat system, And even then the combat system couldn't keep up with the performance of the Submarines, Hell the Collins turned faster then what any one expected them to be able to. And the fact that the Collins have suck past ASW aircraft and USN ships and subs to sink an Air craft carrier and Amphibious assault ships says just how good they are

  • Machinery on platforms isolated from the hull, and modifying the casing of the submarine with fibre glass fairings. Issue with the periscopes, They have already been fixed and are no problem now, And in actual fact, The Collins most biggest problem, Was just the combat system,

  • @armalite762, solentgreen2020 - You do realise that the Collins class submarines are a very good vessel? Yes at first they had there issues, What where they? Well lets see, on the first boat some of the sections had to be re welded, These sections came from Sweden. After that all sections where built in Australia, The submarines also had problem with the propellor, They sent it off to US where it was redesigned and built, Issue with the noise that was created, Solved by mounting the ...

  • I see in the news that the subs are full of proplems only two are in the water. the others are well, lame ducks , Better to replace them now befor they kill all on board.Dont get my wrong the NAVY do a fine job but please give them somthing that works and is safe. And dont blame Adelaide we only built what was on on plans .

  • TCFan25, The collins class sub is considered by experts to be one of, if not the best diesel-eletric submarine in the world, Sinking a USN carrier in war games and all.. etc

  • strongly agree, all i can say

  • actualy its Swedish... its only assembled here.

  • kungfuwadeoss is right, and wrong.

The Collins Class submarines are based on a Swedish design that when Australia started building theirs, none of the design had actually been built. 12 meter boats for the America's Cup had more tank testing that the Collins Class.

Australia built all 6 together and that was reflected in the problems they had as they were trialled prior to commissioning.

Makes you wonder why they didn't build 1, sort it out then build the other 5 right from the start!

  • @kungfuwadeoss provide the proof and I'll stop laughing at how stupid your comment is!

  • Yeah but I don't think a aussie submarine has to worry about a ferry boat but then again these days you never know what a terrorist might have planned.

  • they wouldve checked the ferry for a long time before the went on if it got that close

  • cool vid dude, the engineering that goes into these things is amazing.

  • Those other vessels were close to the sub. We were on the Manly Ferry travelling between Manly & Circular Key. The vessel that passed between us and the sub was the ManlyJet Cat going the reverse direction. The Collins Class sub was sharing the channel and turned to leave Sydney Harbour for who knows where!

We can only hope the three ships masters knew what they were doing.

It was great to see the sub on the surface and moving.

  • Arent all thos other vessels too close to a warship?
