I think Andy truly believed he was Slim Whitman at that moment. A Slim Whitman unaware that he was dressed in a ridiculous outfit, noticing the audience is laughing, but has no idea why; therefore he carries on singing like the professional Whitman is. The only Andy Kaufman present was his body, but the mind was put away, watching this on the TV playing in his mind, laughing his head off.
@1636100 Andy Kaufman was a Slim Whitman fan.... surprisingly enough he could actually do the material justice. in my opinion though, Andy Kaufman did do the best live Slim Whitman cover I've ever heard
I did as Dravenswrath suggested listening to it without the video. He fooled us again, Andy really loves the song. Had he wore a suit and tie we would be laughing at an old song or his performance but he's drawn us away from there. We're laughing, uncomfortably, at Andy. Listen to the different versions of Rose Marie and I believe this is the saddest. His comedy was on a different level- made us laugh, think and sometimes be sad. Perhaps the clown cried. I know I did.
@dljc1979 I wouldn't have expected him to sing it any other way. His seriousness was part of his act. It's like he's playing chicken with the audience.
@TheSnowballEarth I find it funny because its not funny and it supposed to fill a comedy slot and its meant to be as unfunny as possibly. The irony is so think I can't help but laugh. Something unfunny is always hilarious to me. Trying to be funny isn't.
I never knew Kaufman actually sang this on TV. I thought that was Hollywood. Wow! This isn't the Kaufman I remember. On HBO, if he was on, I'd say "Huh?" like I have done to Letterman ever since he's been on the air. This is Kaufman doing a decent rendition of an awesome love song I wouldn't have the courage to record in a million years.
"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. "
and there is something really interesting going on with andy's gaze... that is, with the expression in his eyes... here, and in many other performances. a level of loneliness and longing, but also of complete transparency... complete honesty with the cosmos. something like that. :P
@gigantes1966 I've read where Kaufman has been compared to the Dadaists because of his sense of anti-humor. To me this goes way beyond what might be considered a simple Dadaist "is-it-funny-or-not" routine. To me this type of guerrilla humor is best described as "gonzo," if I understand the use of the term as meaning an in-your-face approach, where the real joke lies in the presentation of the joke, and in how it's perceived. Or something like that.
The fact that there are thirty-seven dislikes for this video shows me one thing. There are at least thirty-seven people out there who are completely retarded and wouldn't know talent if it pinched their ass.
Many people don't seem to be aware of the fact that while Andy was growing up. he took his idols - including popular singers - very seriously, and therefore practiced their styles for many hours in a totally sincere manner. It was no wonder that years later when compared to mere impressionists going for a quick joke that Andy mowed them all down like they were nothing.
This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and there are so many things going on, on so many different levels in this performance, that it is PURE GENIUS. Had to come back after first seeing/hearing it a week ago to relisten and enjoy again. Way to go, Andy! FIFTY STARS!
Surprisingly good! At first was a bit afraid he was going to "MOCK" Slim Whitman & his beautiful singing--and instead was thrilled to hear such a true rendition of Slim's incredible singing! Wonder what Slim Whitman thought of it? Would love to hear Slim's opinion. Slim had (has) such DIGNITY as well as talent and that is probably what inspired Andy, who clearly was in awe of Slim.
This was my favorite song on the 'Man on the Moon' soundtrack. Seeing him dressed like this is somewhat distracting, but I really do love this version of this song!
He wasn't being comedic or making fun of anything here. He was just singing a song. His reputation for ambiguous humor still prevails and gives the audience laughs.
@rick7531 Are you kidding me?? Tony had the drop on Andy from the start--besides--did you ever see the 2 of them in the same place @ the same time? Think abt it !!!
@8cccpeevostokzempf Yes I saw Clifton, and Kaufman on stage together @ Carnegie Hall in front of over 2000 people, and of course in Hollywood, both together on stage at the same time..
that was awesome! never mind the goofy turban and the diaper! Andy probably did that just to see if the audience would really listen to him sing, or just look at the weird outfit and go "what the...?"
Andy had quite an impressive vocal range! Andy, we miss you man!
@SteevDragon67 I think you have something there. Andy apparently said that he never considered himself a comedian, but an entertainer. What he really wanted to do was be an old-fashioned showman, but he could only do that in the 70s through a veil of irony. He actually liked Elvis, Slim Whitman, Howdy Doody, all the stuff that people thought he was mocking.
Andy was a Slim Whitman fan...I love this ...I wonder what Slim thought of it...Whenever I am feeling "down" I watch this and it gives me a laugh....Loved you , Andy, and always will......RIP
Watching this again, I don't think Andy meant for it to be funny, he obviously liked the song and wanted to sing it. You can hear the audience started to laugh in the beginning then realized it was serious and applauded in the end.

Whatever his "point" was...I didn't get it? He did do a worthwhile rendition of a beautiful song. Was he too poor to buy a suit?...or was he doing a "Depends" commercial?
Watch 'Andy Kaufman on Letterman Part 1'. I think it was sorta like when he used his Foreign Man character with his horrible impressions and then launched into the best Elvis impersonation anyone has ever done. In this one he does a zany, off the wall Swami/Yogi kind of thing complete with costume, contortions and sword swallowing, then he completely surprises the audience with his serious, beautiful rendition of Rosemarie. He was truly gifted.
Yes, he is funny, until he settles into the side to side singing then he is singing which is very good at.....
Slim was just very comfortable in his own skin and that is what he is showing., he did nothing foolish there, he of course didn't do Indian too difficult...watch him do Elvis
You don't know Kaufman you idiot.....why oh why would he spend time on Whitman, his thing was Elvis, but he loved Whitman, he only copied those he loved.....did you not see him doing the intro (and the full version) look for it a hole of I Remember You. So you can Put It To Rest...HE LOVED WHITMAN THE LITTLE KNOWN CMT singer you love to hate ha ha he he he can't get by without trash can you

Imagine an Andy Kaufman movie directed by Tim Burton who ALSO has a taste for the strange and obscure and used Slim Whitman's music to great effect in his film "Mars Attacks".
I'm not sure what your comment was as far as Slim goes....Andy loved Slim Whitman. He couldn't go out there and seriously try to sing his song any more than he could Elvis, so in his fashion there you have it. He copied people he loved and respected. And did a great job doing it....
You are right, I now know, after watching Andy and learning about him he really loved Slim....as he did Elvis that is why he did this song and if you watch Slim do this song he does copy him, Slim was so comfortable in his own skin, just like Andy is...Slim was a great man, and soooo talented, if you watch Andy intro him in "I remember You", you can see such admiration on Andy's face...
Also, for all of you idiots who are hung up on talking about Slim Whitman singing this song...this was originally from the 1924 musical comedy co-written by the young Oscar Hammerstein with Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy....Slim did a fantastic job on this and Indian Love Call also from the same movie, listen to and educate yourself....It is not a country music song......Who cares if he likes Slim or not....he can't tote his water.
Well no, I am not sure how to take this...I do not know Andy Kaufman, I saw the video of him introducing Slim, was that a joke or was he really in awe of Slim...now not sure, Slim Whitman is such a great talent, it is ridiculous to see someone standing in a diaper singing his songs...I don't find it funny....sorry, Andy, have more respect RIP
I have read that Andy was a Slim fan...if you did not know him or his work; then you would nio understand his humor; I kid you not...he meant no disrespect for the great Slim Whitman...I love Slim's Indian Love Call and Rose Marie.....I even ordered Slim's CD from Amazon so I can listen to these two songs in the car!!!!!
I have done much research on Andy now...I truly love Andy as well, yes, now I know he truly truly loved Slim and was in True AWE when introducing him "I remember You", Slim was so comfortable in his own skin, just like Andy had to have been as well to have done the truly ridiculous things he did, but I have to say, I do understand and love him now...and am truly sorry he is gone, in body...I love ?Happy Happy World...
Andy's singing impressions were excellent. Just as when he does Elvis, get's into the impression and the character so much he defies reality. He's probably better than some people who think they are real singers.
That's it! A comedian admires a singer, wants to sing a tribute song and thinks he can do a pretty good job with it.
The problem is if he goes out on stage in a suit and tie people would say; "Andy, what are you doing?" "Give us the funny man we came to see!"
Therefore, he puts on an outrageous outfit and sings the song with heartfelt reverence, thus transcending reality! Good on you Andy! He kept everyone laughing to his last breath!
This is a classic...it should be in some type of "Hall of Fame"...I have to admit Andy Kaufman was a classic, also. There will never be another to equal him....
the genius of andy .i remember seeing this and i couldn t keep a straight face.he actually does a real fine job with this song.but the outfit......................still laughing 25 years later!
No one really gets Andy Kaufman he is a deep chasm of artistic wonder and ability and made huge strides in comedy. I am being completely sarcastic.
