My best friend a dude from Georgia ... in High School @ CA ... tried to tell me about Skynyrd ... but I was too hung up on Pink Floyd at the time to listen ... later found out that Skynyrd was just as cool in a totally different way ...
@SteveGains Yeah those are some infamous last words. But that's how Ronnie Van Zant was. If it was your time to go then there was nothing you can do about it. His father said in an interview that Ronnie would always tell him that he wasnt going to live passed 30 and that he knew that was his cut off. Even the other band members said he would talk about it.
@wazzzit he was about like Ric Flair when he walked around on stage,he didn't need a robe or anybody to hold his drink while he was out there, but his presence made you feel like you better not mess with him.
@blocklandiscool not on his own stuff .. His first 3 cds are excellent.. even the 4th one with i'm a fighter had a couple of good tracks.. Brickayrd road had that and one or two others.. then.. the wheels fell off the bus.. he started doing the Skynyrd tour and that was that
Lynyrd Skynyrd would still be going today, now, theres a band playing under the name Lynyrd Skynyrd, But thell never top Ronnie and the guys!, Rock on in the highlands!
@tdrewke I do understand your point of view, but just think these people really do Love The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. The song Simple Man has made them cry I'm sure on occasion as myself. Other bands never gave me such a feeling of being a part of something as Lynyrd Skynyrd Band.
Fantastic smoking leading break from Steve Gaines. Who had so much ability and yet, like Ronnie, his life was so tragically cut short before the full flowering of his/their respective musical talents. Some wonderful music created in too short a period of time and the lingering thought of what might have been, had their lives not sadly ended at such an early age. RIP Free birds.
As one of the people who created this, I have mixed emotions. I'm glad fans get to see it. But neither the band nor I and my crew get a penny out of these hundreds of thousands of views. Doesn't seem fair, somehow.
@tdrewke PART TWO,,,Please try to understand us everyday good old boys are still around and love to set around and talk about back what Lynyrd Skynyrd Band music burned into our soles. Those Freebirds in the sky would say,,,It's not ALL about the money anymore. No disrespect but,,, Ya know what I mean?
Billy Powell was an awesome rock pianist. The sheet music for his solo on "Sweet Home Alabama", along with a couple of his other solos, can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm.
The sheet music for Billy Powell's "Sweet Home Alabama" piano solo can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm. His solos from "Call Me the Breeze" and "I Know a Little" are there also - note-for-note.
saw them a month before this show at Nassau Colliseum on Long Island and then saw them in Florida 5 days before the crash - so great and at the top of their game - STILL miss the shit out of those guys...
I was the video engineer who recorded this show on 1/2" Sony reel-to-reel videotape (a VTR for the Hall of Fame at this point). I created the burn-in copy to help us recognize bootlegs... which this must be. But I enjoy the idea that people can see this great performance. My friends and I (the Director who cut the show live and three camera operators) carried the equipment to an ancient, scary elevator to the attic room of Convention Hall, and took it out every night...

Nice tune but lame lyrics. Watergate doesn't bother them? Was "Southern Man" an offensive song to someone? They knock another musician in the song (Neil Young).
Being a proud redneck is a dubious distinction. I still bought their albums.
Joe the philosopher is a is a contradiction to your name when you make uneducated statements.
If you researched the song you would find out it was more of a song of rebuttal than insult.
Ronnie said they loved Neal Young's music,But Ronnie felt that Neal's southern man Lyrics unfairly potrayed ALL southerners as racist. Ronnie said "I felt Neal was shooting all the ducks to kill a few"
The Birmingham verse meant Ronnie did not Approve of Gov. Wallace's treatment of Blacks-Hence BOO BOO BOO.
The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band at there peak. Simply the greatest of all time. Ronnie, Allen, Steve, Billy, Leon.....Rest in peace brothers.....you will never be forgotten. The music is timeless.
Yeah ... Steve Gaines really smoked that solo! ... A great fucking band at the height of their powers ...tragically cut short just a few months later ... but the music sounds better today than ever ... No contemporary band can touch this classic Skynyrd rock 'n roll ... not by a country mile!
Nice! Some extra vocals one doesn't here on the other similar videos. Thanks Lynard Skynard for your music1 I only wished that a we had a band form N.C. like this that supoorted the Southern cause. CSA forever and thank you Arick Larrison Lovedahl for your CAS service. N.C. gave the most men and lost the most men for the CSA. I am a proud Southern son of a CSA war veteran. The South was invaded and the Generals from the South were superior, but lacked men and supplies. Read the true CSA history.
You people are so dense, The man that walked up was Donnie Vanzant, ronnies brother, How he loves his mother, Donnie became a shit head with 38 special, but this was a good scene to see two brothers hug, and the band was drunk, Allen Collins picked it up at the end. No way was Donnie Vanzant walking into Lynyrd Skynyrd. The end.
yep they were drunk as skunks, and started to clean it up after Gary Rossington crashed his brand new car and broke his arm. That smell was written by allen , and ronnie about how fucked up gary was. gary jams great on that smell. Funny that gary is the only one still alive.
Man Gaines just shreds that Strat!! What a solo!!!
These dudes always in control, never screwing up. Looked like wild ass partiers (and I'm sure they were), but always held it together on stage. They owned the stage. Greatest rockers ever!!!

@boopyfat other question, why they didn't survive ? i mean, dean, ronnie, cassie, and steve? well, they are rockin` in heaven waiting for their partners.
@anthonydaddy123 -------Kurt Cobain killed himself. . .not like Steve Gaines.. . . Lynyrd Skynyrd.. . "in German" Es ist einfach nur traurig!!! . . . .
@boopyfat Because "RONNIE SAID SO". The band had already booked commercial flights, Cassie had made arrangements to ride with the equipment truck and The pilots assured them there was NO DANGER. Ronnie Van Zant told them.."ANYONE WHO ISN'T AT THE SHOW IN BATON ROUGE TOMORROW NIGHT IS FIRED..IF IT"S YOUR TIME TO GO..IT"S YOUR TIME TO GO".. Infamous last words...This was a time when Ronnie's bullheadedness worked against him for the last time. So sad.
I have that first lead on 8 track is the only time I ever heard it played besides near exactly in this.I never thought I would see the day I would see this version lead being played.Their will be one less pint of Jack Daniels in the world come tomorrow.
I am to old and dumb to video respond, but look up lynyrd skynyrd I aint the one. 1975. It shows Allen Collins playing with original band, except for the drummer, but no 3rd guitarist. you can find it on Utube.
Collins really didn't do much here blinky. This video highlighted ronnie with his embarrassed and foolish brother donnie jumping on the stage. as far as Allen Collins solo's there are quite a few. Rossington had to play sideline rythym when Allen ripped em out. For example the needle and the spoon, whitch was ripped off of Utube, another is I ain't the one, and will do a video response.
dude youre such an asshole for putting down on donnie because if you pay attention instead of running youre mouth ronnie motions for donnie to come out and sing with him i been knowing them for a long time now n none of them are stuck up just keep youre rude ass comments to yourself opinions are for assholes like you
collins was great...would have given anything to have seen him live. if you look at all the live videos of this song he never plays the solo though....its always either rossington or king. anybody know why?
If you are familiar with the band you will know where Allens solos are. What's Your Name, Freebird, T for Texas, Smell, End of Alabama, Needle, Simple Man with Rossington and Crossroads. There are more. Allen was a great lead and rhythm player.
July 13, 1977. Only 3 months later, Ronnie Van Zandt and other members would die in a fatal plane crash. They had performed in Greenville, SC and were on their way to Baton Rouge, LA. The original Street Survivors album was pulled from shelves because it had them standing in flames, which MCA felt was too graphic. That cover is a collector's ithem today.
Ronnie ruled that band with an iron hand. Demanded they sound just as tight live as on record, and I wish more bands had that attitude. The 'new' Skynyrd sure doesnt.
