I must say I've never been so struck by the beauty of the german language than when I hear Ralf speak...can any german speakers tell me; does he speak a perculiar kind of german or something? Or like particularly "high" or cultured" german?
always liked the subtle deeper meanings in some of the KW-songs. lots of social criticism, i guess: yes, we are the robots - we are permanently controlled by systems, rituals, religion, even by the clock. and yes - we're also showroom dummies... think about it, if you'll stand next time in front of a mirror ;)
@ScissorsKick Better example of our "daily narcissism" being used in a Kraftwerk song is the Hall of Mirrors. That is one hell of a dark and melancholic song. And so innovative for it's time. By 1986 every single one (hands down) of the even a little darker post-punk bands had taken their share of that songs atmosphere, Joy Division being the first one.
Great Vid on The Legends KW. Glad they gave up the 'dancing' though, those moves on 'pocket calculator' were a bit lame. But i guess they can't be brillant at everything. Thx 4 the vid.
When I was a kid I remember reading about them building their own instruments. Genius. Also now I understand the 30s-style black and white photos and where they were coming from in that period.
Astonishing and many thanks - these guys are so prescient: 'Ich bin der Musikant mit Taschenrechner in der Hand' translates roughly as I'm the dabbler with a pocket calculator, foretelling the techno revolution in the bedroom, not to mention the dreaded mobile ring tones.
Hahaha don't write off mobile ring tones now. With mp3 ringtones, I can have 'Kraftwerk - Popcorn' as a ringtone. I can sit there enjoying people call me but I myself never answer my phone for obvious reasons. hahaa
Wow... that whole bit about nature and technology belonging together was amazing! It was really deep and it inspired me. I want to find him and give him a big hug.
As far as I know not. There have been some massive - let`s say - irritations between Huetter/Schneider and Wolfgang Fluer after he has released his book "I was a Robot"
Karl Bartos has worked with various Bands/Projects and has released a very remarkable Solo-Album. He also teaches on the Berlin Univserity of Arts as a visiting professor
Ooooh thank you for the translations, I could never understand what he said in the interview bits.
I have a feeling Ralf Hütter never personally liked the idea of giving tons of interviews and promoting your work in the media, it's like he shunned and still shuns the "plastic" aspects of being famous. I dunno, I might be wrong but this is the impression I've gotten.
I also agree with you, that they always had a certain distance to the entire "show business mechanisms". In many ways the robots are a development of the "Showroom Dummies idea". So the robots should really reflect their own position within the "wheels of music industry". "I`m your slave ( sluga ) I'm your worker ( rabotnik )" They are talking about themselves.
Besides that, the robots also fitted to their "man-machine" concept very well.
Ralf still does interviews with magazines. He did some TV-Interviews after this docu as well, but he didn't appear as a real person -- you can only see the Robo-Ralf with his voice overdubbed.
I don't know why they have decided to do so. I just could speculate on this.
Certainly they never had the best relations to the media. Maybe this is the reason why they are kind of underestimated compared to what they have archived artistically -- but that's a different matter.
Ich mag Kraftwerk . Sie sind die beste.

drmegabite 3 years ago
It`s "Europa Endlos" ( eng. "Europe Endless" ) the opening track of the album "Trans Europa Express".
The user anTONYM2M2 has made a very nice video for it which you can find here on youtube. Check it out ( it`s on my favorite list of my channel )

Kraftwerk never had a track 'Popcorn'. It's written by Hot Butter
BigLesbowski 3 years ago
Popcorn was written by Gershon Kingsley. The band "Hot Butter" covered it in 1972 ;-)

Yes, I agree with you. It seems like Ralf feels very uncomfortable and stressed in this situation.
