I don't know a lot about politics but security guards? I've helped run numerous events that Mayor McCallion attended and she always arrives in her car alone and unaided with energy, gusto, and purpose. I don't know enough about the history of Hazel's time here as mayor but if she "lucked out" I'm glad it was her. Some people are smart enough to know an opportunity when they see it. If she used development fees - great! Our tax dollars can go further. Easy? Maybe. But she made the most of it
Hey, fair comment. Depends what you want in a mayor. The gushing spigot of money in those thriving years were turned into the highest salaries for municipal elected officials anywhere in this country. Then she gave herself and councillor-members sitting on Enersource Board meetings $35,000 a year. In the between, she demanded "cooperative councillors", rubber-stamping of policies and keeping citizens in the dark about what was really going on.
'We don't operate like the federal and provincial government. Thank God.' I love this woman.
For the last 30 years, she has run her city like a business. Every dollar is accounted for, all spending is carefully scrutinized. And as such, Mississauga has been debt free since 1978. Not many Canadian cities of that size can say the same.
Here's the deal on Hazel McCallion. The woman lucked out being mayor of a brand new city right by Toronto and an international airport in what was wealthy Ontario when Boomers were booming. She (and all Mississaugans) lived off development fees and ask anyone --it's easy to be mayor when the coffers are flowing like that. Next, Freedom of Information reveals her duplistic secretive way of ruling (not running) Mississauga complete with "security" guards. If she were PM we'd be a dictatorship!
Why the censorship ?
