My jazz band director is from the Yucatan and has a pretty thick accent. When he announced this as the next song that we would be reading through no one had any idea what he said. Ebonics + thick Latino accent = much confusion for the trumpet player in the back row...Good song nonetheless!
I'm somewhat new to the whole jazz scene, a few months exploration, so I began to wonder, "I wonder if Lee Morgan plays on this track," then at 1:30 -- just as I was about to click this album on wikipedia -- I had my damned answer, lol.
This is perfect---not one wasted note. Bobby Timmons was touched by the Gods when he wrote this, and all of the Messengers carried the spirit to a "t".Lee and Wayne are clearly in touch with the Higher Power on this track,Jymie Merritt is in that bass zone, and,as always,Buhaina is the holder of The Mighty Groove.
It is music like this that ensures Jazz its immortality. It will NEVER die!!!
You know, there are similarities between this song (Dat Dere; [Timmons with Blakey]) and Tanya [Byrd with Dexter Gordon] from album "one flight up". This song however was recorded 4 year earlier. Does anyone know the reason behind the similarities?
I gave "Tanya" a listen — at first I didn't see much similarity between the two songs other than the minor sonority ... but when I heard the short "kick" section I saw exactly what you're talking about. There are similarities in the melody and especially in the sound of the harmony between the two horns. It was composed by Byrd — it's even possible that he did it on purpose; since the rest of the tune is pretty different he probably figured he could get away with it.
thats gotta be freddie hubbard on trumpet---he replaced lee morgan i believe and i guess wayne shorter replacing benny golson in the wonderful everchangin jazz messengers
I am from zagreb, croatia and i was looking for this album for about a year and a half - finally i've found it in budapest in dob utca (drum street) lovin this track from the bottom of my soul ::))))) bobby timmons and art 4 eva
well actually you can find a lot of records - in Zagreb (The Capital) - but there's just one problem - you have to wait for a long time - for example - I waited for sonny rollins - next album for 3 months ::)))) but that's just the sweetness of HARDOP JAZZ - I'M LOVIN IT - PEACE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS
Well, we all hate waiting, but that just makes it all the more enjoyable when you actually get the album. Merry Christmas to you too, (and a Happy New Year as well)!
A Minor Blues Classic, also with a fine lyric written by Oscar Brown Jr.Lee Morgan telling a story bending notes playing his happy Clifford Brown inspired trumpet,The is my favorite Wayne Shorter period playing funky tenor as Trane said about Wayne he new how too scramble some eggs. Now last but not lease Tom Thumb on piano Bobby Timmons take them to Chuch Brother Timmons! with Art Blakey playing back beats that's a wrap.

A veritable showcase for the dynamic and improvisational range of Lee Morgan. I love his solo on this track. Goose bumps. Philly boy.

I really like early Wayne — he seems to show some Rollins influence here, something about that "swagger".

Quite apart from his solo wizardry, hear how fluent, precise and quietly Lee Morgan plays his runs during the theme's exposition.

Well sir, I'm glad to hear that you were able to find it! I can't imagine that American Jazz records are very easy to find in Croatia.

@rprzntn This is one of the main "Jionts" a must for any music enthusiast. Everybody, on this track is on point.
It's Art Blakey, at his best. Check out his press roles, among all the other phenomenal stuff going on!!!
