Is it possible that the interpreting really was very good, but that the instructor wanted specific words (in English, of course)--and THAT is the part that wasn't coming through (since the interpreting was done in Sign language)? I sincerely suggest that, in addition to having an interpreter, you have one or two people sharing copies of their notes with you. Seeing the lecture signed, PLUS viewing copies of the notes will put the English terminology together with the signed lecture.
Often Deaf people say that an interpreter is good b/c they understand the interpreter, but they cannot hear what's being said, so they can't really say if they are truly interpreting everything accurately and thoroughly. This is especially important in an academic setting. In higher ed, the student needs everything.
I had an interpreter in my karate class. She took the class a year after I took it. She was my partner for practices. One day I got promoted and she did not. She got jealous. I saw the teacher talking but my partner did not interpret him as she was supposed to. She kicked my ribs severely. The teacher saw my partner did not sign the part. He told me to watch for any surprise next time. I quit the class because I did not trust my enemy. I had swollen bruise on my ribcage. Ribs broken? Maybe.
I am interpreter and I do understand where you are coming from. Sometimes, just because the interpreter is clear to understand, it doesn't mean he/she is matching the instructor's message. It's a two way street.
At the beginning of you stated that the interpreter was good. Good enough that you felt he/she was certified. You also stated that you felt that the instructor lectured mostly from the book. The book you had in front of you to compare with. Which you also stated the interpreter matched as well. My view on this situation is that you may be placing blame on the interpreter due to a bad grade.
