Just a word to the wise. The Disney Rocks are a great place to Crawl but if you are going to camp, think twice before you stay at Russ Hogans Camp Grounds next to the Dam! We took our crawler group there and Russ is not the "good ol boy" he would have you believe.!
Man, I made those trails in a Yellow CJ-5 Jeep, and a Old Army Six x Six back in the years of 75 - 81. Ask around Langley and Disney about the McClure boys. We cut timber in those bottom lands, from the Flying J ranch and all the way back into Arkansas and south along Grand River.
I went there the other weekend and he had those wheels and axles on a old broncho with a 460 and THREE x-fer cases! It was 8-1 at the front wheels. INSANE! He crawled up EVERYTHING at the wailing wall!
The obsticle is "The Wailing Wall", just beyond the waterfall climb up "Little Blue" can't miss it, it's literally a wall. Looks easy here because Hogan makes it look easy.... he is on a harder line than the other 2 rigs, (it get's flatter as you go to the left) and he still has no problem with it. My Toyota failed, on an easier line. His rigs are just plain capable. All of you nay-sayers should head-on down to Disney and show Hogan how dumb a rotary buggy really is. Put up or shut up!
Rotarys dont make buckets of tourque. They are a High RPM engine which meens they have to have high RPMs to make the power they need. Im sorry but maby in a sand rail or a pre-runner style rig but not in a rock climer.
cummins diesel? do you know how heavy those are.. and the rotary mazda is prolly out of a RX7 or RX8.. they make huge power in a very small package so that means there light
I was thinking same thing, Go with a 4bt cummins in a light frame. Put the engine in the middle and run longer drive shaft to the front and have most the weight in the center of the vehicle.
could be right thinking in weight, but I thinik that torque in low RPM is better, low maintenance cost and ... the sound!! A cummins sound to much better than this a dentist-engine!!!hUAhuahuHauhAUH
at low rpm there isn't much torque, but with the gearing somewhere around 200 to 1 in first that doesn't really matter.
this engine weighs 50 lbs and can wrap the rpm to around 1200. light weight, great power band lets you do more with out changing gears, and you can buy a used rx7 (the whole thing) for around $150. (engines barely broken in)
obviously it doesn't have any problems getting this truck over anything Hogan feels he would like to drive over.
Hogan has a tube 2 seater on 49" IROKs now running a 460 on mogs. As for boring and pointless, why watch it then dumbass? That wall has claimed many a victim and axle trying t to get up it. Not nearly as easy as it looks here.
i know its cool and all going up a steep wall, but honestly it looks like a bunch of little rc cars running out of batteries going up that hill ha ha!
i will do this to my new nissan if i get 100 thummbu p

Well you could just come on down and see if you can follow those rotaries around
hogansoffroad 2 years ago
they make high rpms which means you can gear down more to get more power to the wheels and not loose to much speed.

a rotary...in an off roader... i could see an I4
but why something that burns oil like crazy, and costs an arm and a leg to repair....
id go for a toyota 2.2 myself
mageac 3 years ago
Well I haven't seen it burn a drop of oil,he has a yard full of them nothing to repair ,and if you don't believe, just come try to follow it.
hogansoffroad 2 years ago
in my personal experience rotaries tend to wear out the rotor seals and be hard on fuel.
but most of those are modified rotaries...
