  • I first heard Phil Ochs live at an SDS-sponsored People for Peace Concert in Boston in the fall of 1965 or spring of 1966. I was already aware of his music from the folk scene in Cambridge, MA. I have never stopped listening to his incredibly beautiful and very meaningful songs.

  • @DrBillBushing

I envy you; I never got to see Phil Ochs live. Thank you for your comment! :-) -- Renee

  • This song hurts so much and so good when you're in a melancholy mood and you think about how he ended.

  • His magic evokes powerful feelings (which could scare or threaten some)... but personaly I can't seem to get enough of Phil even after 40 years... wow, it's been that long... yet most people that know of him are unaware he was multi-dimensional (he could play and sing most any type of music superbly) Phil was an incredible, indelible composer/songwriter with wonderful style and a great voice... even Dylan knew Phil had that edge. I believe his music with some PR will make a big time revival.

  • @OMGDeBest

I agree totally! His music will always be relevant! Did you know that there is a new movie about him that will be coming out soon? Its title is: "There But for Fortune." If you do a search for it, you can view some clips from the movie. -- Thank you for your post! :-) -- Renee

  • Phil was a big influence on me but not being as political as his fans it wasn't all that political as his beautiful voice, melodies, fantastic lyrics & great underrated guitar playing. I just loved that he was doing something important with his life and this song spoke to the Agnostic in me. I just felt that he was so witty and cool and care so much about the less fortunate. I wish I had just known him so that I could have prescribed some anti-depressants for his "less-fortunate" side...

  • HI Renee... HOW did you learn about Phil Ochs? Phil was a HUGE influence on my life--one of the FIRST American folk singers whose songs I remember becoming aware of & inspired by! I was just a kid--a child of refugee immigrants--but I had a friend whose flower children parents took us to some pretty amazing festivals in NYC! EXCELLENT vid! THANKS--sharing it among many others on my Zeeva International FB Page--today, 35 years ago at the age of 35-Phil Ochs took his life...

  • @ZeevaTV

Well, I'm going to date myself here, :-) I first heard Phil Oach on the radio in Los Angeles. His song: "A Small Circle of Friends" had just come out and the DJ's were playing it on a regular basis. I had never heard a song like that before; it was so unique. Basically pointing out how apethetic people were, even when faced with horrible events, set to a kind of silent movie comedy backgroud music. I just knew that this guy wasn't your average, run of the mill, songwriters. :-)

  • im actually related to him!

  • Amazing. Words cant express what I feel when I listen to this. Having lost my sister in a tragedy at a young age I feel like she couldve done so much more but now shes gone.. I guess I'll have to do those things while I'm still here

  • Possibly the only Youtube video I've seen without a dislike. And with good reason too!

  • @joeevans94

Thank you for the comment; it IS a lovely song. :-)

  • @joeevans94 you're pretty much right, except I saw one Leonard Cohen song with over one million views and zero dislikes, but this is still quite impressing.

  • my brother Ron was a fan of Phil. check out other vids by him on youtube

  • Love you, Phil, this day and every day. God be with you, my beautiful friend.

  • @slicknicknirvana

Actually, I think the point is to take things Damned seriously.

  • Thank you, and Bless you, for posting this song that I need to listen to every day.

  • @smedleylt

You're welcome! :-) --- I know what you mean about listening to it every day...

  • @ReneeFromLA at least Phil did it while he was here-bittersweet-

  • I met Phil in Greenwich village[1974] while I was doing advance work on Ramsey Clarks senate campaign Phil sang a few songs for a rally ,Man how we need his voice today!

  • Nice Video Renee,

    And a truly wonderful song....

  • I get more inspiration out of this than I do with Christian music.

  • @Amanda102587

I'm a huge fan and very happy to have someone who knew him post here. Thank you! -- Renee :-)

  • @ReneeFromLA

he died before she was born

  • @Amanda102587 I was sooo sad when he died. I felt like he thought there was no more place for him here as the world had moved on....a Minstrel comes for the telling, and gracefully bows out when the tale is done. RIP Phil you sang it proud..now you're playing with a helluva band :D

  • Lame ass pictures. But yea, beautiful song.

  • Phil Ochs in my favorite folk-singer of all time and my favorite Jewish singer of all time.

So many great songs - his politics were not mine but his passion was. Phil was a beautiful man with an awful ending.

  • So glad you posted this... it should be played more. What a voice...

  • I agree. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :-)

  • @judibird1956 He was just great ...... but some people didn't want him alive....

    Now he's gone! :-(
