I'm not musical but was able to make it do what you see in the video without any practice or reading the instructions. Obviously to make it do something that sounds good, you probably have to be a bit musical, or at least know what "sounds" good, but you can still have lots of fun with it and nothing really sounds bad compared with some instruments which can be played badly.
Interesting concept based on step sequencing no doubt. This is great if you want your music to sound robotic, with no organic warmth to it, but how many real musicians will actually choose this over a real instrument? How does this improve your skills as a musician?
While arguably it can't be as nuanced as an analogue instrument - new samples can be loaded onto the SD card and it can be used to control external hardware - including analogue synths.
It's perfectly possible for sequenced music to have a groove and swing - and when production is elevated to an art form, an electronic composition can be as subtle and nuanced as a great piece of jazz or a classical composition.
The buttons are hard clear plastic, but don't feel too hard to press - they probably stick up around 2mm but have bevelled edges so you can slide your fingers across them without problem - they do "rattle" a bit though when you do that.
Thanks :) It's an instrument (made by Yamaha), and one that seems to be getting used by a few bands as they're starting to discover it. When I filmed that I'd pretty much only had about 30 minutes trying it out before, and was guessing my way through what does what.
Yes it has a midi port so you can connect it to a computer (I guess you'd need a USB midi interface) or to another midi instrument, or even to multiple Tenori-on's!
It is very cool - saw a news report about the Tenori-on a couple of weeks ago and tried one in a shop and just had to buy it there and then after giving it a go! It's a hefty £599 ($1200) but worth every penny because it's so amazingly cool and fun to use!
Just awsome :)

is it easy to play or do you have to have lots of experience with other musical instruments?

what do the buttons feel like to press? do they stick up real far, or is it really easy to slide your finger around on them?

Wow, that's really cool! And also very expensive but you handle it really well. But is it an instrument or something to play games with?

Ah, its like a sequencer. Does it have a midi port so you can connect it to other stuff?

The music at about 6:20 reminds me of the Lloyds TSB 'for the journey' advert music :)
