@mfperna The American Dream. All the good and bad things in America. Living in the states is like living in the fast lane. It is the center of the world. Nothing is small in America.
I am a duel citizen with ancestors who have gone to war for both USA and Canada. I have lived in Canada and the USA. I hear it all from both sides, and this song resonates with me.
There is an old chinese curse that sounds like a blessing at first:
@chrissept21 not so ,,, americas got it all good bad and indifferent its all there ,,, rich , poor ,, young old ,,,and comming from a guy who grew up in a boarder town ,,, where do you think the dreams of a young guitar player in a boarder town were focused ? right across the creek ,, you have no idea
@mfperna it not a sarcastic view at all it a song about a guy who grew up in a broader town and look across the river to see America in all it amazing glory good and bad big and rich ,,, America has it all ,,, my brother wrote this he lives in sarnia ontario ,,, we both love and hate America like most American do ,,it actually about a boy looking at America
I remember when it came out in 1992, it was clear at the time that Mitchell was one of those who used his work to take a slap at the US for their foreign policies ( bombing Baghdad just a year or two before ).
I disagreed with his limp-wristed approach but loved the song.
It was just a Canadian hippee taking a shot at the US right wing, whoopee.
@nineinchallan noooo he was a guitar player who grew up in a boarder town ,,, where do you think his dreams where ? americas got it all good bad and indifferent and this song has nothing to do with bag dad and i know this for a fact ! this song was written by jim chevalier and has nothing at all todo with what your saying ,,,,
Always nice to have Canadian talent appreciated by our American cousins! But Kim's music has a lot of elements that aren't typically Canadian-- or typically anything for that matter! Very unique artist (thanks for posting this classic)
just sounds pro-Canada to me like... visit America, but don't move their looking for this and that when you've got everything in Canada... at least that's what i think
If I may say so, everything Kim and the Guys do should be on the radio more. That's coming from a Texan that has been listening to the most underated man of all time. Don't know if I were supposed to, but I voted for Kim to have his own star up there. Just a man that appreciates a great guitar player and vocalist.
appreciate that Mr. C . Didn't say near as much that I should. Didn't say anything about my other 25 favorite bands, most of which, are Canadian. like beavis and butthead said once, "some people are dumb." lol thanks for the invite and talk to ya soon
No doubt. I ask my students to write about Canadian music for extra credit. Hoefully it'll help spawn a new generation of Americans who appreciate Canadian music.
This is the one and only Kim Mithcell song that is rarely played on the radio. It's so underated that I could not find the lyrics for this song on any of those websites. Don't believe me? Find out for yourself. Heck, it's my mom's favourite song. Never hear it though. I had to come to youtube to hear it.
Great song and band! Saw Kim in BC last year and he said "it's nice to be away from the province the devil built, Ontario." Don't know why he said it, but people cheered.
To rtosman..spot on! Great response ...excellent! These days any observation of The States is being seen as anti-american ..sadly. Way too much air time being used up on hating on dumbass issues when it could be used to expose all the corporate and government lies ( used by both to line thier own pockets on us! )so we can all begin to share the pot more equally and buy more stuff!! Anyway...I dig this video, it's done very well.

I never thought Mitchell wrote the song. But he was happy to perform it, as his views were the same.

Nope - not unless you consider anti-materialism and anti-corruption to be anti-American.
