The top piece of my mount actually did break off (I super glued it back in place but it's a bit flimsy). I should have tested getting the iPad into it before repairing it.
However, I've got an extension cable that works perfectly when the iPad is connected to the mount and am considering an iPad mount for the car for trips when I'd want to have a big GPS up. I'm also probably going to just buy a 3G iPad 3 with GPS when it's available.
I actually did get it to work briefly today. I've ordered a dock connector extension and I'll see if that works more consistently. Thanks for the vid.

If only that top piece would come off and then you could slide the ipad and the gps unit through a ipad case so it would stay on.
