Does anyone from the 1950-60 crossings or later who remember the "below the decks" activities.. I was taken below for special treatment - and I was a brand new officer..was it only for new officers on your ship?
I crossed during the early 60's and it was really more like hazing than this and there were even some additional below the decks special events for some of the guys.(.there were no women aboard in those days)..and what went on below was a lot more 1950's,60's fraternity hazing type stuff...
@dropemnow We had an instruction 2 inches thick on what we could and could not do. It was still a good experience and provided some good camaraderie. I would not do it today knowing that sodomites are allowed to serve.
The Ship I had my best day and my worst day....Still I miss and loved her.....you may hate where you been but I respect all the guys that served with me on this girl....All Three Deployments....
Soft my ass. I served aboard the America from '91-'95. You guys in the 60's think you were so much tougher than us. I bet the guys from WWII would call y'all pussies. It's all relative. To be truthful, I would have been scared to serve with the sailors in the 60's. Most were drafted and didn't give a shit about anything. The Forrestal fire would have never happened on our ship because we had excellent training and excellent damege control.
@nvdirtbiker Times have changed for the worse, shipmate; Now it is considered hazzing, and is all but a lost tradition. Even the Cerificate you receive, even if you get one, has clamshells over the meremaids boobs. When our female sailors got on-board all our ships, Morallity came into play, and initiations went into the crapper.
This must have been part of the "new navy". When I crossed in 1967 kneepads and hand wraps were forbidden! I guess this new generation of sailors with their computer generated firing solutions are afraid to get their hands dirty! Good luck America, you are going to need it with women, gays and soft-core sailors onboard! You may want to rename this event the "Soft-shellback Initiation"
@jhdcruiser Thanks crusty. Old Navy, New Navy, Gay Navy... whatever Navy it is does not matter to me as long as I stayed retired. The destruction of the USS America is just a foreshadow of the way this country has gone and it going.
@jhdcruiser hey I became a Shellback in 06, call us soft navy, we are not allowed to do anything. It's not the sailors that's gone soft, it's the Navy.
Cause the previous generation complained alot about "hazing"
This was awesome! Ahhhh the memories! Is this from '93? I was cleansed of my slime on board America at that time. Blowin out the pad eyes, LMAO. One of the best times of my life, thanks again!
This is a great tradition but has been quite pussied down over the years due to women in the navy,I mean knee pads??? seriously? I did the blue nose in 2004, now THAT was something.
Saxxarba I did the Shellback initiation in the 90s to but I think it was in 93 or 94.I remember how much Duct Tape I had on my knees. I had watch in 3mmr for the first part so I did it in the late afternoon. And I hated the Peanut Butter belly guy.
I am a Navy Retiree of 22 years. I participated in the Shellback Initiation onboard the USS America back in the early 90's. Dogfish1960 is correct. It was a huge deal and to this day I'm proud to call myself a Trusty Shellback.
WOW endunn remember that shyt, i was total oblivious to that whole black hawk down thing until we started getting dudes brought onboard all fugged up but the real disaster was watching a supposed night ops mission on the CNN news, way to go media.
The night before on the 1mc: For the information of all hands: 'wogs rule! Wasn't it every day for like two months at revelie...the closest coutry is...Somalia. We had to have the Shellback 'ceremony' just to break the monotony. The Indian Ocean sucks.
Yep... had some fun in that hot and boring place. I still cannot watch Blackhawk down because of knowing what happened on shore. Most of the Aerial stuff was of desert and camels... not sure what the real mission was.
I did not know that. I participated in this ceremony and found it morally neutral. It was one of the last ships without women and being gay was still punished if caught violating the UCMJ. We had a couple women go through it (temp on-board). How can a matriarchal and sodomite Navy expect to win a war is beyond me!
Becoming a "Shell-Back" was a very big deal when I was in the Navy...It is now classified as illegal. It is considered "hazing" because of all the gays and women...Give me a break!
Sorry squids, you'll never be as tough as us. Shellback=only way to show each other they are tough lol

@dropemnow ... now it's a Navy full of men in dresses and women who wear the pants. Evil is good and good is now evil.

Hey @endunn
I spent my last 11 months in the Navy aboard the USS America in 1994.
I was on this cruise but I was already a shellback.
I spent 3 years on the USS Saratoga too.
You don't realize how much you miss these days until there gone for good.
