The "two humbucker"-guitars he mentions are probably Gibsons, and the five way blade-swithc singlecoil guitars = strats. Twangy - telecaster. But the nasty guitars from the sixties now worth a lot - what might those be?
it seems more like it would help for more if your guitar goes out of tune during a live more performance, not that you can suck at guitar and sound good.
I don't think guitar players (or guitar lovers) have anything to fear with this technology. It basically just fixes intonation problems. You still have to know how to fret chords and play the right notes at the right time. It's not going to turn a Napoleon Dynamite into an Eddie Van Halen. You are still going to have to know what you are doing and play tastefully, boldly, thoughtfully and...creatively! Autotune just fixes bad notes. It can't do anything to fix bad songs!
I've been playing guitar my whole life. I still feel this is awesome. Technology is the way to go. If you're not a good guitar player... it's still going to show anyway. Plug in and enjoy!
I'm glad it's availible, as I'm sure some percentage of the population will enjoy it ( Whether making a crummy player decent or a good player better), but I'll take my guitar sans computers, thank you. I'm perfectly happy with the imperfections that give it soul. If I wanted clinical perfection, I'd listen to electronic.
Actually, it's a pretty damn good tool, especially if you're gigging and you tend to use floyd rose a lot. You could easily go slightly out of tune in the middle of a song, especially if you break a string, which will render the guitar unplayable (unless you have these new fancy Ibanez tremolos, but I think even they aren't perfect). As for the incompetent musicians using it, well, who the hell cares? Fake sound may be hard to spot, but crappy music sticks out like a sore thumb.
Sorry guys, as impressive and revolutionary as this is, it is completely unnecessary. I may not use oil lamps and typewriters (no offense to FluidMinds since i get his point, I really do) but I don't want to use something that will effing talk and spell words out for me as well. Last I heard, humans were a learning race. The people who constructed this are worthy of some commendation, but when they're gone, the consumers who are left behind will get the bitter end of the sugar cane.
The tune instantly is cool, but the part with the bends would be a problem. man, this stuff makes all shitty players sound good. Defeats the purpose of practicing a guitar when a computer fixes your mistake for ya, you know?
Antares, I hope you're listening: This is really interesting technology, but with the hex pickup and all that processing power, if it can't be used as a MIDI guitar, then to me it's just half baked. If it can do all that retuning, then it must be doing high speed pitch analysis already. Please take it to the next logical step, and let us know what the price is with MIDI out. Thanks! :)
I like the technology and new research on this but it's going to suck hearing more bad wobbly crap everywhere, autotune is part of the reason I stopped listening to the radio.
This is just AMAZING.. And thats coming from someone who has been using auto-tune in the studio for YEARS lol... I think whats most amazing to me is the fact that I hear NO "artifacts"... Like on Auto-tune for voice ("EVO" user here, haven't gotten 7 yet), it doesn't take long before you can "hear" artifacts once you place it on a track/insert... But on this, it sounds 100% natural. I wonder if this means the next wave of auto-tune for voice will be just as transparent?! Hmm, guess we'll see :-)
Why does a pro company like Antares demo a new product with an amateur player like this? Antares doen't know that a studio player would make their product sound SO much better? No direct microphone on the amp and wet noodle playing. If Antares had paid a pro player to do the demo. . . . . . .
Guys guitars are not Vocals, if you need an auto-tuner to stay in tune you're doing it wrong. What's important here is the ability to allow impossible tunings, and emulate the sounds of different pickups. It will also drastically cut the cost of a good sounding guitar.
Basically in the future it will save you thousands, and allow you to play new kinds of music such as solo bass + guitar. People dissing this are obviously pathetically bad at guitar, so bad they struggle at tuning.
I really have to say that this thing basically sounds exactly the same as the variax, but I didn't watch the entire video so is this just a pedal, or would it be installed in the guitar? It even sounded identical in that the bass had that weird hollow tinny sound as did the 12 strings.
Serious pianists have lusted for a grand that stays in tune. A prototype was built but it is doubtful it would be affordable. It had each string adjusted at the hitch pin (280 strings!)
An acoustic piano that never needed actual tuning and affordable. That would be a good thing.
@beautifulvines It has that same quality that all pitch shifts do... Sounding *just* a tiny bit behind the actual note and like you are playing with tin foil strings.
0:50 "destroyer of music as we know it, thanks to his invention of Auto Tune..." ;-) This is indeed some amazing tech, it makes even a terrible guitar sound good. (just think - "tuning" could be a thing of the past!) Can we get it as a rack mount for the sound board to fix those who can't play? seriously, also... could it be used to make the notes entirely different that what is being played?
people have been playing normal electric guitars for close on a hundred years and made some great music, all you got to do is tune it ,intonate it and play it.didnt someone tell him?
something, thats not a 99 dollar guitar either its a fender,i could see it being handy if you havnt got a bass,12 string, alternate tuned guitar to hand, but for tuning, intonation.just seems like a stupid selling point.
Might be nice for instant alternate tunings.. I don't know tho - You think there's a lot of wanks out there now showing off their "stuff" on youTube... just wait.. I hope it's expensive... :)
I can't believe this guy! He's not 30 SECONDS into this ad and he's already bullshitting his customers by trying to make them believe that 250 M multi/sec is the same thing as 250 "Super Computers"!! And by the way, 250 M ops/s is insanely slow by today's standards, even if there are two running in parallel. If he's already making up bullshit in the first <30 seconds, I assume everything else is too. I will NEVER buy anything from Antares. Zero credibility for "Harmony Central" as well...
I find it challenging & rewarding as a working/professional musician to cover a myriad of musical styles & adapt to non-guitar driven music.
It's for this reason that I welcome new advancements that let me cover a rig of amps & collection of guitars w/just a handful of peripherals: i.e. the axe fx, an ipad, guitar rig, jim tyler variax, MIDI Parker & this...
Having said that, the tone her sounds slightly phase. Maybe just the camera mic or this is a proto(?) but I'm excited about this!
FYI I don't think this infringes on anyone. Pitch shifting is not new, and the ATG-6 does intonation correction wherever you play on the neck, which I don't think anyone else is doing via electronic means. I think both schools of thought are correct - really good guitarists will use this to go further, lame guitarists will still be lame and fixing their tuning won't make them unlame. - Craig (the guy who shot the video)
This is very cool. I can see why some people might think it's a bad thing. But really it's a very empowering tool. the fake musicians will always be fake. regardless of what toy they might be using to cover up their mistakes.
real musicians will use this and go farther than most can with a standard guitar. technology is supposed to free us up from tedious bullshit to help us make new leaps into the future.
if you're hating then go use your oil lamps and typewriters
@FluidMinds I absolutely agree with your ideals, except that reality doesn't. Technology is an incredibly powerful tool for convenience and advancement, and this does things for the guitar what the very first pickups did to solve certain volume concerns waaay back. But 'cmon man, just because good players can use this to its fullest doesn't mean it will stop bads from abusing it to its fullest as well. You can only make things convenient so much until appreciation for it is eventually lost >.<
@tastytasters - I agree as anything gets easier, we have a habit of taking it for granted. Technology is a double edge sword. It goes with anything, not just guitars or music. When something new is made, it has an equal power for greatness and destruction. That's price we've paid since the beginning when man harnessed fire. But that downsides have never stopped us from marching on into the future and creating some really amazing and beautiful things in the process.
bit late to the party aren't they? maybe this does extra stuff but tbh, the VG strat and variax guitars have been doing the majority of this stuff for ages
True Temperament might be not too bad but it can't compensate for worn out strings, which is a big problem for some player. i don't want to buy new strings every day.
Awesome! man this is the best product ever!! It does only correct the intonation of the guitar, not your playing style. If you do play bad it will sound bad, if you play great but have problems with intonation within chords or when playing higher positions on the fretboard it will sound even better. My strings are worn out after a few days usually and then everything sounds wrong (+-10-20 cents), but not because I am playing wrong .... you see
it's not that bad for people who want to play harmonies that are perfectly intonated. but it could suck for people who purposefully want to make stuff slightly out of tune (like bluesy string bending for example).
Beyond awful. Welcome to the death of music.
