This is cool, however there seems to be a difficulty in deciding which rule to apply in what set of circumstances; i.e. to distinguish between deciding to love someone and deciding *that* you love them, because you think it would benefit society if you did (which would be forbidden by Russel's first rule).

I know you're quoting Russell but I'm guessing you dislike religion...but we need to understand that not everyone can cast off fear and despair so readily. Religion can put an end to pain in the individual's life. You can't just say "oh, it's irrational" and be done with it. Living rationally (in accordance with reality) is hard. Atheists most often DO NOT fully understand the consequences of their beliefs. No God means no safety net, no canned morals, etc.
@FeelingFreshSon I feel sympathy for every human being that has to face the idea of annihilation in death. It is not an easy thing to do but it is the reality we all face. How we choose to cope with it does not change the outcome and those who turn to religion to deny this reality do not deserve my respect.
@FeelingFreshSon As Sagan said, "For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring".
"Gradually, by selective breeding, the congenital differences between rulers and ruled will increase until they become almost different species. A revolt of the plebs would become as unthinkable as an organized insurrection of sheep against the practice of eating mutton."
- The Impact of science on society - Bertrand Russell 1953
@Gaelicfella2011 Russell was only stating what is theoretically possible when a horrible regime gains complete control of a people and country. How people can use Russell to support ridiculous conspiracy theories is mind-boggling.
he was a propagandist for the "them" the regime or whatever you want to call them...this man was one of them..maybe you need to re-read his books to fully grasp what is being said by him..
@Gaelicfella2011 If you think that today's world is a reflection of this statement, then you're an absolute idiot. He was talking about royalty; the people in power in America today are not related to the people in power 50 years ago. Also, 1953 was 2 generations ago, not nearly enough time for anything to change. It would take at least 300-400 years for this to actually happen. You're a fool.
you're the fool..it's laughable your statement..drink some more kool aid and keep believing that..what he's talking was written about in the 1800's.He was just parroting what was told to him and to write about..These guys do not think they tell stories given to them with nice quotes for you spout o about..nothing changed since 53' wow..go back to sleep..nighty night..
@ambush77 You're such an idiot if you truly believe that. He wasn't talking about two generations down the road you tard. He was talking about hundreds and hundreds of years. @ambush77 I have read almost everything he wrote. I am dismissive because you have so wrongly interpreted a man's work. No one with any foundation in critical thinking could come to the conclusions that you have.
how can an interpretation be wrong? I'm wrong because I don't get the same conclusion as you from his writing? So my critical thinking comes into question because I do not see it the same as you? now how is that critical thinking?
"Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible"

I was about to dump my girlfriend just now because she lied to me. Then I heard this- who would have thought Bertrand Russell would save my relationship? Miracles never cease.
A scientist who isn't curious, skeptical and critical isn't a scientist. It's amazing how universally hated Russell was in the past because he was an atheist and a pacifist who questioned so much about human civilization. Only a handful of americans felt safe enough to publicly defend him, including Einstein.
We can replace the bible, the Koran and all other holy text with this 2 minute video clip. Love is wise, hatred is foolish. Simple. This on it's own can replace the ten commandments.
@skywize I think in general the principle works but I do not love the people that commit horrible acts or teach horrible things. Whether I would use the word hate I'm unsure of but I definitely do not "tolerate" opinions that do harm to others. I can despise someone's ideas without wishing them physical harm. I think Russell would agree.
@GrandMammal do you not read full conversations? The very last post I wrote consisted of these words: "my tolerance of cruelty is nil.". I said that what Russel said were words to live by. I did not say they applied to every single second of your life. I assume you are a bible reader? This is what Theists do. They take very general rules from a 2000 year old book, and apply them to every aspect of their lives. It's ridiculous.
@skywize I was only asking a question, not attacking you. I saw the comment so I asked. By the way, no I'm not a "bible reader". I'm a Satanist, thank you.
@skywize To think that you have the ultimate wisdom is foolish. Hate is not just foolish, it also has a meaning and funktion in yuor life. Anyways, the world is much more complex than you can imagine, you can not include and satisfy its whole complexity by a lonely sentence. What Russell says is a stupid schematization. You also can say "being depressed is foolish" a.s.f. His trick is that he appeals on your narzism, because nobody wants to be foolish. I made a one-minute video highlighting a very small sample of race-mixing advertisements.
