Thanks to my old guitar teacher, who instead of making me play guitar made me play a 12 string Bandola, I managed to develop some awesome sweep picking tecnique. I guess in the end he actually helped me a lot, and I gave up on that teacher, 'cuz I wasn't learning anything in guitar with him (I was 8 or something like that).

the way herman plays it (Where he reaches over with his fret hand instead of playing from underneath) Looks cooler and is actually easier. Plus it sounds cleaner if you do it on the high e string because you're less likely to hit the surrounding strings because there is only the B string you might accidentally hit. Just in stead of 13, 16, 18, 20 on B. It's 8, 11, 13, 15 on e, to get the high pitch squeal they do one the album, do a pinch harmonic on the 20th fter on the e string too.

There isnt just one right way there are several right ways, but i can tell you after a while holding the pick like that you will realise you arent progressing fast enough or not at all. For example listen to him play the riff in this vid fast, its sloppy. I can guarantee you if he adjusted to one of the right ways of holding a pick that riff he played would sound better instantly.

because it's a good start for the beginner to learn alternate picking and to learn how to coordinate both hands. What you do when you learn this song is:

learn how to hold down a fret as you pick

learn how to rapidly hold fretting while picking

and you get a confidence boost when you tell all your friends: "hey I can play the start of through fire and flames" - it's all about motivation and dicipline dude ;)

Sure he may suck compared to a fucking master level or what ever, or perhaps he's playing poorly because he's not full of himself or he doesn't need to prove to anyone how good he is. All he's doing is chucking on some vids to kids can learn songs. These videos are great if your a beginner and obviously they're not recommended for advanced players.
