  • Sorry I laughed, I don't own a atari....yet (it was way before my time), though thanks to your video I now have an idea of what games I want to get for it.

  • loved it, was just showing my daughter what atari looked like in my day. i can't say i've played the same games you did, but it was a cool trip back. kudos for having stargate on the list-that was my all time favorite game back in the day! do you play any newer games/game systems? are you on MW3?

  • Nice list but I think this guy was a little rough on Defender. Thought it was a good game considering it was an earlier Atari game. I still gotta put Enduro as one of my top Atari games. Still one of the best racing games out there.

  • Props on this video. Gives some respect to the games that didn't get the recognition they probably deserved. Personally, I'd add Atlantis and H.E.R.O. to this list, and even Frostbite. Great games with excellent core gameplay.

  • @ItsMrDiamondJ Thanks and yes I do like all the games you mentioned, in fact Frostbite is my wife's favorite and she's very good at it too :)

  • I have circus atari, but no paddle controller :( Maybe I can make one myself

  • I loved this video just by listening to your presentation! :D

  • Nice list! Circus Atari was a favorite of mine too. Multiplayer Warlords was amazing to me as a child. Some of my favorites (other than the well known classics) include Kaboom!, H.E.R.O. and Demon Attack.

  • Sir, its January 17, 2012...just finished watching your video and that was the best 8 min & 21 sec of my life. Video is so well done & with a nice selection of games that I recognize & respect. (Was overjoyed about mention of Spider Fighter & Circus Atari!) As for Bump and Jump, never had it for my 2600, but liked it a lot (maybe its on the Data East Arcade compilation for the Nin Wii?) Keep up the good work & if you get a chance try Space Master X-7. It's a unique 2600 game I enjoyed.

  • @9isuzu5 Thanks and I believe I do have a copy of Spacemaster X7 around here somewhere. It may have gotten mixed in with some doubles but I'm sure its here. I never did try it so I defintely will thanks :)

  • bellissimo video, molti giochi non li conosco ;)

  • I have to agree with you on Pitfall - totally over rated. Pitfall 2 on the other hand...

  • I just ordered an Atari 2600 (darth vader)

    cant wait :3

  • They certainly don't make them like this anymore.

  • Thank God. A top 10 list that doesn't include River Raid.

  • @uzi9millimetuh Yea its a good game but a little too repetitive for my taste. If the game was somehow randomized so that enemies and terrain were never the same it would be so much better but perhaps I'm asking too much from my beloved little 2600 :D

  • @atarileaf Yeah, I despise it. I don't mean River Raid per se as it is an OK game, but it's not half as good as everyone says it is. Boring and repetitive, even back in the day. I'd rather play Phoenix, Galaxian, or Spider Fighter any day of the week if I was looking for a good shoot em up. BTW, do you still like Ice Hockey playing solo against the CPU? I was thinking about getting it, but don't know how much fun it would be one-player.

  • @uzi9millimetuh I love Ice Hockey but its much better with 2 people. The CPU can become predictable but sometimes it puts up a bit of a challenge. If you want a good shooter, try Millipede. If I were to change this top 10, its one game I'd definitely add.

  • Craigslist is Amazing Ill be getting An Atari 2600 with 2 joysticks 2 paddles and 43 GAMES Amazing

  • very realistic! ; )

  • @zazozung The game i'm saying is about a fish that has to eat other fishes but it could only eat fishes that are smaller or equal than it.. And the more you eat the more bigger you get untilo you're big enough to eat the shark is from Intellivision (: *sorry for my bad english.. English is not my native language LOL*

  • My favorite 2600 game is Centipede. I think i may do a top 10 vid. This vid got me thinking. :-)

  • @IntellivisionDude Its funny, after watching this video, which is almost 2 and 1/2 years old now, I think some of my answers would change. I'd definitely put Millipede in there for one thing. Awesome centipede sequel.

  • My bad, snafu and the game with a shark and fishes are from Intellevision !

  • @Niqoleh Fishing Derby? It was an Activision game for the 2600.

  • you missed the snafu and the game with a shark and fishes :(

  • lol! in the game phoenix was the laser things bird poo?

  • was für ein nerd ich kann mit euch wetten der sitzt bestimmt den ganzen tag nur vor dem bildschirm xD

  • Like this video, and the games too!!!

  • Missile command not here so u get a dislike

  • Yep - Spider Fighter. Totally underrated.

  • Great choices there. I really like Dodge Em - have you played it ?

We had a charity day at school to raise money (in the early 80s) and I brought the Atari 2600 in and charged pupils 10 pence for 3 goes of Dodge Em as games don't last very long on it (unlike Adventure or Space Invaders). Good times.

  • My Favourites are. Adventure, Jungle Hunt, Pitfall and Dig Dug.

  • you do no that you just downloaded that game because i can see the mouse arrow

  • @RTproductionsx Of course I know. I'm the one who downloaded it ;)

This was before I had good video capture so I had to resort to filming emulated footage from a computer, but please know that I do own all the games in this video.

I don't use emulation anymore for footage, haven't for a very long time.

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO LIST! MY FAVORITES OF ALL TIMES ARE:

    PHOENIX, SPACE INVADERS AND PAC-MAN.

  • why do you keep saying "ahh" like somebody is checking your tonsils

  • @NadrianATRS LOL, I do? This was one of my first videos and I just did it completely off the cuff so there's probably a lot of word whiskers in it :)

  • lol,it's awesome even better than xbox

  • @bumtaksi

    you make my day XD

  • i had this atari game when i was a kid , i am not able to find one of my fav.. game . i dont know the name as it has been 15 yrs now .

it had a fighter jet and we had to kill the enemies ,unique thing was that the back ground color used to get changed when we used to hit so called captain . the color chanded frm blue to purple and then green ........ it used to say bramunda when the game was over . does any body know the name of it ....

  • Excellent video and list. I was shocked how well Defender played for the old Atari 2600. It is even better than the playstation arcade ports because the controls are terrible on those versions. The only version I like better is the Atari 800 computer.

  • @theelusiveone I meant to say Defender 2/ Stargate :)

  • @theelusiveone I actually just did a short review for 8-bit Atari Defender and you're right, very good port. :)

  • @atarileaf Excellent I will check it out. BTW Circus Atari is one of my all time favorite game. Not my #1 but very close. I never knew anyone else who like it. Did you ever play Warlords? That was my favorite 2600 game when played with 4 people.

  • I LOVE THIS CRAP !

  • Its so hard to pick 10, and even harder to put them in order. I remember playing Robot Tank for hours, then of course Berzerk, Crystal Castles, Pitfall, River Raid... I have been reading on how this machine was programmed and the fact that there are ANY games other than Combat and Air Sea battle is a miracle. If you are interested, pick up 'Racing the Beam' on Amazon or search for David Cranes Pitfall lecture on Youtube.

Nice list, some I agree some I dont but we both agree on Atari 2600!

  • i remember playing Bump 'N Jump at the arcade when i was younger, now i own the NES version

  • nice list

  • my favorites were: Frogs and flies, pitfall, bezerk, and river raid.

  • Atari lol

video game primitivity at its best :D

  • Glad to see Spider Fighter made your top 10! I love this game. I bought it when it first came out and still play it fairly regularly today.

  • LOL everyone time a new games comes you say Aw likes its the good ol times keep it up

  • Wow! Stargate Defender on the 2600 looks MUCH better than Defender.

  • @gillianorley I Totally Agree!

  • No Space Invaders?

  • @MrDemonoid11 I get a lot of these kind of comments. I picked 10 games out of hundreds. You can't fit them all in. Although I really like Space Invaders, its simply not in my top 10, top 20 yes but not top 10.

  • @MrDemonoid11: I wouldn't put the Atari 2600 version of Space Invaders in the top 10 either.

  • you do notice that you are playing this on a computer

  • @themythbuster100 I may have noticed. I did this video before I had any capture device and software to work with. Emulation was my only option back when I first started. I do own and play all the game carts in this video.

  • @atarileaf oooo

  • @themythbuster100 obviously he notices because he is the one playing

  • FALLOUT 3 is the best game of all time

  • Oh yeah!! Asteroids is a definite agreement there. Also, I never knew there was an ice hockey game for the 2600! I remember being so happy with the Intellivision because of NHL Hockey. That was a great one. I definitley will try out Ice Hockey for the 2600. Looks real fun!

  • this is a good list :)

  • Good selection. I'd be interested in your LEAST favourite games from your collection.

  • @scorpionatthepc You know what number one is in the least favorite ones... hint? Starts with "E"

  • Grande merdaaaa!!!!

  • Wow, I forgot Atari has this. My local theater, the theater had this back in the day past the concession stand, it was called clowns I beleve. I was hooked bad. I'd give up a testical to go back to them times. Tron is still the best game however. Peace.

  • Wow, I forgot Atari has this. My local theater, The Cinema center had this back in the day past the concession stand, it was called clowns I belive. I played this game the first time I saw it for several hours and my brother watched the movie for us both, I was hooked bad. I'd give up a testical to go back to them times. Tron is still the best game however. Peace.

  • Do you have black ops? Lol

  • Hi atarileaf, I have got something that will make you happy, I started my own Atari Game Reviews, I hope you will tell me how they are so I can improve the series. If you comment, I will be very happy.

Great video by the way! :)

  • Great video, very nice. Love your choice of music and I have discovered Activision's Spider Fighter. You are correct sir, VERY addictive!!!

  • great video and i subbed

  • u forgot e.t. jk lol

  • What´s great about old games i that most of them, are pretty cheap. I mean, world ever pay 60 dollars for an Atari game? Nope. Every Atari game is like a minigame, and that´s why it´s great, but it´s also cheap!

  • @neomysterio That´s why it´s cool. But NES is clearly better :P

  • No Tunnel Runner? If you haven't played this title you must find it my friend. One of my favs that nobody talks about anymore. Here's a few more: The Towering Inferno, Yar's Revenge, and Berzerk. BTW I certainly agree with your comments on Phoenix, absolutely one of the best shooters on the 2600.

  • How much did they cost back then.

  • @NonstopRam Depended on the title. I broke my piggy band for a copy of E.T. when it went on sale for around $40. It was pretty much just like is today. When games first came out they were expensive. You waited a while and those prices came down. Your average game ran in the $25 - $35 range. Though I do remember certain titles over $50. And near the end circa '87-'88 they were giving these games away in Breakfast cereals. LOL

  • @concretespecial 40 dollars was had alot more worth back then.

  • two big birds and eggs....what game is it?....thats all i remember

  • @MEXICANMADESTWR Joust!

  • Stargate aka Defender i loooove that game when i was just a kid!!!

very nice video.. love the 80's

  • Ah yes...Phoenix and Spider Fighter were awesome.

  • This is a wonderful list, but check out the one The Game Scholars have made at our channel. Agree, Disagree, Compare. Give us a watch!

  • 3:06 my dad was addicted to that game but now hes addicted to plants vs zombies XP

  • i loved my Atari....no Atari no Playstation 3...My generation started the video game revolution.

  • Nice inclusion of Bump n Jump. Also one of my favorites. Great vid, I'm tempted to make my own top 10 now.

  • My dad grew up with one of these, and so i decided to download an atari emulator,im trying to find and play as many games i can XD

  • @bmx4lyfe2xtreme I love Donkey Kong but the 2600 version - not so much.

  • Wow! Thanks for posting, really makes me stroll down memory lane!

  • I love those games too, but the best for me is Solar Fox, good video pal

  • Where the hell is Empire Strikes Back?

  • you should do a video with a list shouwing us underrated atari games

  • journey escape, vanguard, and haunted house were some of my faves...

  • I had those same Yamaha speakers

  • i must still have over 100 atari 2600 games today. including berzerk and enduro, astroblast, centipede, frogger, frogs n flies, etc,.,

  • Piftfall??

  • Hey Atarileaf, you said that you got Asteroids along with Combat and the Asteroids port didn't come out until 1981 so what year did you get your first Atari 2600?

  • @Gameslayer0 Maybe it was 1981 but I'm pretty sure it was around Christmas 1980, but we definitely got Asteroids. I do remember Asteroids being insanely expensive, like $90 as it had just come out.

  • @atarileaf That is so fucking ironic. I got my copy at a game store for maybe about $2! I can't believe it was 90 dollars! I would expect at least $40!

  • @Gameslayer0 holy crap! r names r like the same hahahahahah!!!!

  • A friend of mine had one of these back then. It was totally awesome. The programmers were the real heroes:

The Atari 2600 had no software or firmware implemented to build on, a cartridge could hold only 4KB (later 8KB) and it had a RAM of only 128 bytes! That's it. No graphic memory or sound memory. And so everything had to written in Assembly. These guys were code artists!

For comparison: A Word 2007 document with only "Hello World" written in it is about 9.7KB when you save it!

  • circus atari still looks fun for some reason

  • Does atari have HDMI output ?

  • what about breakout. Circus atari is the shit

  • YAY LEAFS! Go Colton Orr!!!

  • not because the NES is newer but I think it'll hold up A LOT longer

  • atari looks awful nowadays. I don't know why but I think the NES' graphics hold up 100x better...

  • if people message me, then i will upload footage of games from the atari 2600 that they want with techno over it. check my videos for examples

  • i love how this guy is clear that these are his opinions u r awesome!!!

  • So I've been surfing around here for a bit trying to recall the games I owned and played back when I was about 5 or so. Your top 10 contained 4 I had owned and completely forgot about! Asteroids and Ice Hockey were good (Bruins fan here), but I really enjoyed Phoenix and Circus Atari. Thanks for the video. Really takes me back!

  • nice man! not exactly what i would have but u did have some interesting games in there and some of them i had never seen. Overall it was one heck of list!

  • I see you really like phoenix but a much harder faster and better graphical game with WAY MORE levels is called demon atack. Its almost identical to phoenix but way more advanced.

  • video pinball was one of the first atari 2600 games I had as a kid, and I used to play it for hours at a time.....the tilt feature was cool...(but I could never understand how the square ball didn't get stuck on on the flat bottom....

Warlords is probably my top game....playing against 4 other people was great fun...it was like mario party in fossil times...

  • pinball is #3 in my opinion

  • you are awesome!

  • I hoped to see River Raid in your list coz it is my favorite on Atari 2600. anyhow nice list you got there

  • That last game looks really fun.

  • Fabulous list :) Stargate's way up there in my top 3 :) Good to meet a fellow Canuck who loves the Leafs :) Go LEAFS GO! (and as per you Ottawa Sens fans ... take a chill pill ... it's not our fault the Sens aren't doing so well!)

  • What a different time.

  • Hello! I am going around posting comments on Youtube in reference to Kaillera Client. With certain emulators enabling it's support, it allows you to play classic/retro games like Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, NES, etc & even MAME (coin-op arcade games emulator), versus other players, while online. I am attempting to attract interest in the hope of getting together some classic/retro game loves, so we can play each other online. That's my goal, so, let me know if you're interested!

  • i love the list man

  • Phoenix was amazing

  • I like circus atari but i found it difficult as a kid.

  • you should realy give "centipede" a try, it'll definitly mess up your list.

nice list, but just try centipede its easy to find and pick up on ebay or some.

  • @0M9H4X I have centipede and I do enjoy it but its not in my top 10 :)

  • @atarileaf.

ok, as long as you HAVE it your safe ;)

  • @atarileaf Try E.T., a very good game. (just kidding)

  • Best Atari game = Pitfall!

  • Phoenix ruled so God damn hard.

  • SOLAR FOX + BUMP'N'JUMP = Strongly agree

  • Comment removed

  • hey, should a "real" canadian love ice hocky?

  • Wow, I totally forgot about Spider Fighter. Great game. I also dug its cousin, Plaque Attack.

  • Never even heard of Solar Fox... neat.

  • In no particular order: Pitfall 2, Wizard of Wor, Berzerker, Atlantis, Donkey Kong, Track and Field, Asteroids, Adventure, Kangaroo, and Defender.

  • How's the durability of this console? How often does it need cleaning and such?

My NES is quite demanding in this area. Gotta clean, clean, clean >_<

  • @grogtgs not wasted, used

  • I like how you actually talk about the games instead of playing crappy techno and just showing the covets of the games

  • its kinda funny that the 2600 ended up being better than 5200 and 7800, pretty cool

  • @xxchimakaraxx 2600>7800>5200

I own the 7800 right now, just because it can play 2600 games and 7800 games. 5200 sucked. I wish Atari would make a new system and destroy Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. The Jaguar ruined it their chances..

  • @amari2001 heh yeah, and not to mention their "handheld" console, the Lynx

  • Intriguing list! I am not a hockey fan, but Ice Hockey is my 2nd favorite of the sports titles (RealSports Tennis is my #1). BTW, I hope you play Asteroids with the difficulty switch on, unlike your demo of it -- I wrapped the score countless times one long winter's night back in '80s, and had impressed permanent colored "marshmallows" floating around in my brain as I attempted to sleep afterward. ;)

  • @roberthurstrius Normally I would play Asteroids with the difficulty on. These old videos of mine, I used emulators and I don't think I used the virtual difficulty switches. Yes the marshmallows, I used to think of them as popcorn but marshmallows works too :)

  • phoenix wont work on my emulator! fuckin stella...

  • 1. Pitfall 2. Yars' Revenge 3. Space Invaders 4. Dig Dug 5. Asteroids 6. Mario Bros 7. Pole Position 8. Ice Hockey 9. River Raid 10. Mountain King :D
  • I wasted many hours of my life on this machine.

  • pac man for atari 2600 sucked! non of the mazes from the beloved original were on there

  • ''have you played atari today?''

  • @Karlox13 especialy the fall in the hole glitch!!!!!*sarcasm*lol

  • where's custers revenge?! ^^

  • Have you played Atari today?

  • I liked Circus too. fun part was always making the people die

  • wheres warlords? and wizard of wor?

  • You are my hero!

  • 1. Swordques earthworld

    2. sword quest waterworld

    3. ms. pacman

    4. pitfall

    5. adventure

    6. space invaders

    7. wizards of wor

    8. asteroids

    9. pacman

    10. angry video game nerd (homebrew by me)

  • Nice list!

  • Time tripping; we all have our 'time machines.'

  • oh those were the days. all this good old memories. thanks so much for bringing it back !! :)

  • jjejeejjeje que buen video me acuerdo yo cuando los jugaba jeje

  • mrs pac-man on the 2600 looked horrible compared to the arcade game.

  • Great list!

  • my top five

    5:pit fall

    4:bumb n jump

    3:pac man

    2:mario bros

    1:burger time

  • dont forget E.T

  • @Jalenstien Other way around. Forget E.T.

  • @communistrecords It was a joke =P

  • @Jalenstien are you kidding?

  • @xenocide8 About what? My favorite Atari games? No, I am not.
