As a Japanese who knows the original series done by Shintaro Katsu, this Kitano version is disgusting and silly. It is just a poor remake with blond hair and tap dance line. The TV series in monochrome by Katsu were really great. You could even smell sweat and blood. He was actually a master of traditional vocal and instrument "Shamisen" and also performed well traditional dance. No wonder that he was good at sword play too. Kitano is just phony and cheap.
IMHO, Zatoichi-1989 (Aka Darkness Is His Ally), the final installment by Shintaro Katsu, IS the ultimate and definitive Zatoichi, and it pretty much closes the entire "blind superhero" subgenre. It is also strangely one of the kindest and most human swordplay/martial arts films. You could definitely tell Mr Katsu was putting a lot of his heart into it. I do respect Kitano's work (Hanabi my favorite) but this Zatoichi was one of his lesser films.
@AliG4life no way, Sanjuro is right on...Katsu Shin is Zatoichi and now that he's dead the series is over, this film was ok but not even close to being better than any of the original 26 films
@AliG4life i didn't like the directing, the goofy dancing at the end of kitanos film and the part where the zatoichi says he's only blind because he keeps his eyes closed.(being blind was a big part of zatoichi he really hated to be teased about his disability thats what motivated him to become a master swordsman, it's an insult to the character to say he's not really blind) i can admit in the original series #6,16,24 didn't have the best directing but at least it kept with character.
Shintaro was the man. Takeshi's Zatoichi was nowhere near as good. It's hard to condense a lifetime of character into less than two hours, but it's thanx to him i got turned onto the original which i finally managed to locate all 26 episodes(films) and in the process of watching them. Beat is still the man though, like violent cop sonatine boiling point brother etc..
kill bill sucks compared to any kitano film. especially the scene with lucy lui and the overdone blood effects. prefer realism to be honest, just like kitano
@yazmatraz I'm no film school kid, but I'm pretty sure a good deal of the blood in Kitano's Zatoichi is added in during editing. Plus, a severed artery will gush or jet because of blood pressure. In any case, both films, I think it's safe to say, defy so-called realism, but neither of them are beyond the suspension of disbelief. Illusions are a part of film-making.
this is not zatoichi it never was and never will be....even though i know im going to get alot of hate for saying this...i dont care this movie was complete shit....
Don't think Quentin should get the rights to remake this film. I love his movies and all but if they're gonna remake this movie they shouldn't have Hollywood do it. Hollywood has been fucking up a lot of classics with bullshit remakes lately. I'm sorry but no. This movie's just bad ass the way it is.
Drexxle58, I do agree with you on everything you have said, but you cannot deny some of the special affects are awesome. Did you watch it at cinema or did you aswell see the high def copy on 2 4 h o u r m o v i e (.) n e t?
hutger hauer? takeshi kitano said he had blond hair to mean zatoichi was not regular japanese but had russian ancestry... now you made me want to watch blade runner again. :|
i would have to agree, not to say that kill bill isn't enjoyable for what it is, it just requires more "pregaming" (drinking, smoking or whatever) to be enjoyed. yes zatoichi is better.
@ballen900 I know you said that like a year ago, but really? How can you even compare the two? I liked both, but they're both very, very, very different.
In Takeshi's favor I have seen him in other movies and always liked him (see Kikujiro, 1999), but he is too slow ... and the tap dancing?? ... so out of context as to make Shintaru sama roll in his grave.
Zatoichi is based upon aincent legend, it has awsome actors ( Takeshi Kitano just fits in way too good), precise choreography and somehow it has everything you can possibly want from movie.
Kill bill is just some usAmerican's fettish that pretends to triute Japanese culture.... and fails.
@SaulMeyersz rofl u should calm down there son, no need to be a douchebag, just cuz he like this movie more than kill bill... if u don't want reading comments of people loving foreign movies, then go watch Hollywood trailers or something..
