Memory and reflection bring it into our present and will drag it into our future as well. That we are--every day of our lives--who we have been in days that have passed. Each crossroads we face will involve choices that define us forever, because to take one path is to leave another behind. And what we leave behind is not merely another life we may have lived, but another self we may have been.
one of the most wachable films ever. The actors, theire playing, the music, the enviroment, the dramaturge/storywriting. Oh this one is just too much for me, love it and have seen it - maby a 100 times
@20hund06 OK! You win! I posted this, and have only seen it about 81 times! No, really, thanks so much for your comment. They don't get any better than this!
@DOLPHIN85able Then you're 86 years young! This was/is film-making on a grand scale, and it all worked; the acting, sets, music and especially being haunted by Mr. Morricone's themes. Thanks so much!
Many of you reading this will not believe this to be true but leaving out the mafiastory and the harsh 20's context this is what really happened to me in the 70's
@burten345 Well, leaving out the mob part, I'm happy to be hearing from you! You're a survivor! Thanks so much for your mention! I'm glad you enjoyed this.
@Vvillarreal50 Hace poco que he visto aquellos mismos ojos en la pantalla chica! Ella es una de las estrellas del famoso novela pequeña Britanica, "Downton Abbey!" Aquí en los EUA esta en PBS. Gracias por escribir!
Very dark movie..The scene of Noodles raping Deborah casts his character as a bit of a monster and a mobster. One of the greatest in the history of movies. Masterful, sublime, brilliant..
@Wallydaft Could it be that he's a 15-20 year con who has been in love, and lusting after his ideal "girl" forever? The rape is a really hideous scene, but sadly I think the writer had little choice: she was leaving him for a potential Hollywood career. In his delusion there was no other choice. As for the original author, Harry Grey, it would be a miracle to find him now and ask. I'm glad to hear from you; your mention will hopefully inspire others to contribute! Thank you!

@niles040405 I'm honored to hear from you! They are all unique talents and, thanks to the author, have provided "the stuff that dreams are made of!" Think that's early Humphrey Bogart, but wouldn't bet my "catechism" on it! Thank you so much for your comment!
@niles040405 Crying is not an option! Just joking! I'm subject to crying fits myself, when watching this. So many of these characters remind me of the friends/foes from my youth. Guess the best I can say is that I grew up on "the fringes" of some of these characters lives. Granted, it was a 60's time, not the 30's represented here, but I'm convinced that regardless of the time the only thing that changed was the sartorial issue. Thanks once again kind friend! Sergio Leone e Ennio Morricone sono italiani magici!! Ho solo visto il grande epos e la grande declaratione di amore per America "c’era una volta in america". Il libretto e la musica. @MyMREDDIE This is a fascinating idea! Back in the day they would have called this a "pipe dream!' Guess we'll never know as the original book, "The Hoods," written in 1952 by one Harry Grey, seemed to "read" like a novel. I remember reading it around 1958. I'd love to try it again, but I'm not sure if it's still in print. Either way, thanks for your comment, and I'm scratching my head!! Best to you.

@Arschhaarraucher I'm not certain what planet I'm on! Praise like yours makes me just as goose bumpy, and shivery every time! Right now I'm bowing my head. I'm that thrilled by your remarks! For you to know, I was raised in New York City, but spent a few years in "The Bronx." Thanks again!
I accidently kicked off two versions of Deborah's Theme (this one and varadero1839) within a couple of seconds of each other and the outcome was unbelievable. I got real lucky with how they harmonised... but in my opinion I think it brought something different to a very beautiful piece of music. Right up there with Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings

@TheTakeover84 Hi, and Thanks! Your remarks are very thought-provoking. When Hip Hop was still in its infancy, I mourned the death of "Doo-Wop," and street-corner singers from New York. when she (Debrah) was little, she had brown eye, now as an adult they're blue they did not have colored contacts back then. we still love this movie!GSC
@weeGeorgiegirl I don't think they even had "any" contacts then! You're very observant! Hollywood makes many mistakes, but as you said, "we still love this movie!" Me too. Thanks so much for writing!
maybe if UFO aliens are for real maybe somehow they got real explanations for this kind of strange feeling ..span of so many decades tens of years before it got felt again.human being emotions are strange as ever..mystery is what it is all about human being emotions...unfathomable at its core..who knows maybe it is the key to unlock all universe mysteries including human being own history from the past to the future....deep huh?? blame this sharp biting music by enroe?? didnt catch the compsr
first time i felt this strange feeling is when I was seven or eight year old while playing i found myself or my head inside culvert type of encloser but made of bamboo thin strips so dark inside.the year is n the 70's.i just felt so sad not afraid but so sad dont wanna be mysefl alone feeling so sad inside that round black hole .
2nd fime felt that is last year 2010 when i watched curious case of benjamin button n 3rd is yesterday when i watched this movie on once upoin a time in america..i
@qooseek Even today, she's still lovely! I saw her on both a BBC production, and a Law and Order episode recently, and time has been very kind to her! Thanks so much for your message!
I love Deborah's theme and always thought her and Noodles would end up together in the film. Guess it just wasn't to be, what a classic thanks for posting =)
@twiskins Hi twiskins. Wish I had a better response, but you're not the 1st one who has said this. I think there's something in the melody that seems to appeal to two different parts of our psyche. One is the tragic and maudlin side, and the other the hopeful outlook! Either way, the composer, Mr. Morricone must have had this in mind when he wrote the score. He wanted us to contemplate! Thanks so much for your comment; it made me think a lot!
@pufarinu Having seen your video, and only knowing that you are there, with your infinite love for cinema and the beautiful clip you posted, has made my day! I'm so grateful to hear from you!
If we escape punishment for our vices, why should we complain if we are not rewarded for our virtues? -John Churton Collins, literary critic (1848-1908)
You're welcome! This one, although probably better represented via other presenters here on YT, will always be a favorite of mine! I'm thrilled to have heard from you, and thank you for thinking of me! I'm also proud of my little version. Hope I've captured some of the beauty and mystery of this most amazing of films!
Missing you, "BIG TIME!" Where've you been? Hoping you and yours are well, and looking forward to wondrous holidays! Please write when you've some free time.
You're welcome! Any time I receive a compliment from you, I know I'm on the right track. Thank you again my kind friend. Will report tomorrow about the scary surgery part. Buenas Noches!
Thank you my kind friend! Though it's very possibly the 310th of similar upgrades, I'm happy to say that your endorsement makes this little bit seem new and different! I'm really thrilled!
Best wishes, and I'm wishing you the very best of Happy Holidays! Will write more later.

@weeGeorgiegirl I don't think they even had "any" contacts then! You're very observant! Hollywood makes many mistakes, but as you said, "we still love this movie!" Me too. Thanks so much for writing!

No disrespect to the many greatly admired movie score composers, but Sig. Morricone's outstanding work towers above that of any other.

maybe if UFO aliens are for real maybe somehow they got real explanations for this kind of strange feeling ..span of so many decades tens of years before it got felt again.human being emotions are strange as ever..mystery is what it is all about human being emotions...unfathomable at its core..who knows maybe it is the key to unlock all universe mysteries including human being own history from the past to the future....deep huh?? blame this sharp biting music by enroe?? didnt catch the compsr

Thanks so much for your comment; it made me think a lot!
varadero1839 11 months ago
@varadero1839 Yes I agree, he must have a really good imagination.
