the lowest fundamental frequency at which the male voice vibrates is about 58Hz, so when the singers take low notes such as these, their vocal folds vibrate really slowly.
Waouh ! Impressionnant et incroyablement beau ! Que j'aimerais pouvoir chanter ça ! On entend rarement de telles basses dans les autres choeurs (non russes !)
wow this is singing is soo.. powerful and deep!! i have been trying to find this type of powerful, perfect sound for ages. it gives me goosebumps and it's awesome. to me this is beautiful and i enjoyed listening to it
Sooo I'm a 16 year old girl who normally sings alto 2, but my lowest note so far has been an F two octaves below middle C. Would that make me like.......an Alto Profondo?
I think something's getting lost in translation here. In musical terms, a "dark" sound is typically one that is smooth, controlled, "velvety" in texture, masterful, and not shrill or piercing. It's different from the typical perception of "dark" as murky or evil in some way.
@EyeShotFirst1 It is not DARK, it is DEEP. : ) To me, it is the Depth of faith that is reflected by Basso Profondo. God's love transcends it all, from the lowest to the highest levels of our souls. This is why I think it is so important to have those notes but I am not a musician, just one of many Russian Christians.
Bass rocks....Tenors are too girly. I'm a bass (Well,bass-baritone tessitura) who can reach A5 and can Do it in much Darker tones than those girls. The only tenor worthy is Robert Plant.
@Swordman85 Well, compared to Bass-Baritone high notes, Tenor High Notes don't have that "darkness"....And just for clarification, Freddie Mercury isn't a tenor. lol
@Max0Inq its all good though, you are a bass and he is a contrabass. I am a bass as well, but all i can say... is "at least you arent a tenor." they are just a bunch of little girls.
I'm starting to listen to more choral music and I am really really enjoying the russian, the byzantine and italian choral work. I especially love russian because I myself am a low bass singer (lowest proper note is an A below low C), does anybody know where i can aquire some good recordings of choral work?
The source of all good is your local library. I got 2-3 university libraries and one central library in my town. It will take years to deplete your library.
There are three profondos in this recording. Vicktor Kryuchenkov, Boris Tchepikov and Yury Wichkniakov. The most powerfull, resonant and most world wide known is Wichniakov :D
@DonSair20 I don't know them... but hell this is beautiful. I'm basso profondo, and in Mexico my voice is extrmely rare, I want to study in russia beacuse of this choir and Vladimir Pasuikov. I wonder, you seem to know about these guys... MEN, you know how can I get their music?
@RAAMerisima A basso profondo? put on a video then I'm a bass my self and my lowest note is an E2 and only 16 hehe...I'm costa rican by the way so I dont know why we are talking in english but well, i know about profondos really , add me as a friend and I can tell where you find music scores!
And to think of what one think when hearing the term "basso profondo" is mainly Osmin, Sarastro, Ring villains, Grand Inquisitor or Baron Ochs. They sound like boys compared to a Slavic bass.
They say Mihály Székely had notes below the low C, but he never had to use them in opera.
This continues to be one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. I wish I had a couple of those basses in MY groups. =P Absolutely amazing, there's not really any other way to put it.
this song overwhelms me. Great vocals. I would choose this extravigent style of music, to worship the King of kings, any day over the modern pop/rock. Hail Jesus!
Unfortunately, you are correct about this Mr. Pudersepp )-: The Latin Rite Church has had a LONG history of using whatever music is popular at the moment in the sacred liturgy. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm at a Mass or a rock concert. As I say, the Eastern Rite musical liturgy is far better than ours. Orthodox music brings one CLOSER to God; Latin music seems to create more distance from Him. Palestrina was our church's greatest liturgical composer. Now he's completely forgotten.
@Dogsledfan Our church here in Louisville, KY (St. Martin of Tours) just did a vespers for St. Joseph's feast day in which we did Alleghri's Miserere and a Palestrina motet. Now, we are a traditional church, but I just want you to know that there are those out there that still do the "old stuff". Anyway, you can search St. Martin of Tours Louisville to find some of our taped stuff also.
P.S. - I'm pushing for us to do more Russian stuff since I have the notes to fill out the bass parts.
As a Latin Rite Catholic speaking here, I wish that instruments were not prohibited from the Orthodox Mass. Can one imagine what musical miracles might have been wrought by Tchaikowsky, Rachmaninov, or even Anton Rubinstein? Nonetheless, a capella is good......the Orthodox folk definately have us beat when it comes to the musical liturgy now! We've almost totally lost our classical traditions. Last time I went to mass, it was basically a guitar group doing the music. Thanx Vatican II...
I've sung on Catholic mass and on a Orthodox mass. I like the power in the Orthodox music, it has an ancient feeling to it. Catholic music ain't that powerful. Though I like the Byzantine music, chants and early polyphony as well. Modern Catholic music seems to lack roots.
Couldn't agree more with you, Althoughg I know in some places choral music and gregorian chant is still used, I have to tolerate groups that sing like it was a party, with whistles and more, and not a Holy Mass.
I appreciate their will to cooperate and serve, but still... Time and place, I guess.
@Dogsledfan Yes. I'm with you on this one. Cheap, plastic, vulgar and profane is the new Catholic Mass, thanks to Vatican II. I've even withnessed a bari sax wail away in the sleaziest rendition of "Oh When the Saints" in the midsts of a high mass. Oh, the indignities in the name of modernization! I like my sacred life, and i love my secular life; never hould they cross paths.
WOW ! How lucky can one be!!!! I've got the cd. I've married into an orthodox family! That plus I've got a lot of recordings of the Don Cossacks who I was lucky enough to hear in person years ago.
I phoned the company who distribute it and it's down to an expired licence that hasn't been renewed thus no more copies of it unless they re apply for it. The person I spoke to from the English Distribution (if I remember correctly) said that it was one of the companies best selling CDs. I got the St Petersburg choir CD instead but the one I have has very little Basso Profondo in it except the opening track (which can be found on youtube) - We Praise Thee.
