@klapperklaw its not really their fault though. human minds are parasitically hung up on the idea of identification, formation and the need to organize things into compartments. things can't simply "be". also, record labels and press feel the need to use buzzwords for advertisement. it will always be like this.
I saw them in Noorderligt in Tilburg. Now that seems to be light years back. But I thought I saw Echo, Depeche Mode and The Cure at the same time. I liked their drums, I liked their synths and I liked the nostalgic sound. And their hair styles. Of course. But why did they get rid of `Clan of` and change their name in Xymox?
that's great music i had tons of sex on the music from this album (Medusa) if you like that kind of music check out the Cocteau twins (pandora's box) from the same record label (4AD)
This is their "chef d ' oeuvre", whilst it may not be their most popular, critically it has no comparison considering both the synthesis of words and music to create their own sound, thus vision. It's become a creation of its own, a sentiment almost magical.
new-wave, dark-wave, cold-wave whatever (and the one that i hate "gothic"-an almost dirty word associated with insecure teenagers on make-up). Clan of Xymox were an 80s "-wave" band in a broader sense but on a league of their own. Another excellent, experimental and atomospheric 4AD band. Their first three albums were truly works of marvel.
A lot of these "gothic" bands weren't considered gothic at the time and had never intended on being labeled as such to begin with. They were just making music. It's sad that in the club scene, a diner, and now everywhere on the internet, the discussions revolve around what genre these groups fit under rather than any musical quality they possessed. It will never change I suppose, and it's been 20+ years for a lot of fans too...
@klapperklaw I never for once considered COX to be a "gothic" band. To me, they defied any classification. Their music was timeless, alive and magical. I agree with you...the quality of music is what counts...not any "genre"
@klapperklaw I agree, fully. I'm not sure what happened... was it the musical style that lead to later labels or was it fashion? Because for me, it's just 80s... lol.
Generally I just think of them as another 4AD band... I didn't even exist until the tail end the 80's so I can't really dispute any terms with you guys.
The darkwave is the obscure and dark (in lyrics and sonority) subgenre of the New Wave melodic stream of the end of 70s/first half 80s.
Rock (gothic or not) is another genre different from the dark electronic, even if both darkwave and gothic/rock are the primary form of gothic music when it was born in the end of 70s.
My point is, as far as I know the term Darkwave did not exist in the 80's (unless it was a term being used in Europe and we were unaware). I certainly never heard the term when I was involved in the Deathrock/Gothic scene in Southern California. So how could CoX be considered Darkwave if it did not exist at the time Medusa was released. We didn't even consider them Gothic music, just good music. Medusa is still one of my favorite albums.
When I was into punk I was into this band and post punk.I still listen to these bands.I just don't like electronic alone....i'm still tying to understand this gothic label and I was a preteen when I listen to all this.
Clan of Xymox and Medusa will always be the best albuns of them. They could return ...

I know which subgenres are gothic.
In fact with "They are considered" I just meant "They're".

What the hell is darkwave? I never even heard that term until the early 90's. We just called them "another awesome 4AD band" back in the 80's.

Clan of Xymox are gothic/rock and darkwave, which can can be considered both as part of gothic music.
