I got pretty close to the Brian May sound once when I was borrowing a Vox Brian May Special (the little white thing meant to replicate the "Deacy" home made amp from John Deacon) and plugged that into my old THD Univalve and 2x12 cab. I hardly had to fiddle with it all to get a Sheer Heart Attack era sound. Worth looking into if you're looking for some alternatives.

Not really no. Gear won't do it - not with Jimi and Brian, in any case. A lot of that sound is in the fingers and the picking. When he's doing Brian May, this guy helps his cause by using a coin for sure.

A POD can be made to do a lot of stuff, but so can any amp or pedal. If you don't know what you're doing with an effects unit, a POD will just sound like shit, like anything else.
