  • Who the F is Mary?

  • Must be very boring living like that, If I were him I'd be building cabin extensions and hunting all the time.

  • I love Dick.

  • awesome videos i wish the world was still that way

  • is that Dick narrating too?

  • @tulllguy No. Dick did not narrate. It is his friend Bob that narrates. You can look it up if you type "alone in the wilderness" into google.

  • one of the greatest stories ever told i have both vids....

  • we are smart humans, we don't need the money to be slaves and live, we can live even with out theyr money

  • Although he lived an unusual life for the era he lived in, it wasn't such an unusual life a century before. The difference was that he chose this life, and those of prior generations didn't have as much of a choice. Patterson's book on the Nahanni was similar.

Although it would be a great adventure, I don't think I could handle the loneliness for more than a few weeks. And, one mistake and you could die of something simple, like an infected tooth or a minor injury.

  • @spelunkerd that's why you need to be prepared

  • God love him!

  • im jealous

  • now THAT'S a master craftsman!

How many of you can make a spoon with an axe haha

  • An admirable life indeed, I envy the peace Mr. Proenneke must have experienced in his Twin Lakes cabin home.

  • i got it right ? he was all alone there for 30 years ?

  • i'd of traded the spoon for some hot sex with mary

  • can't wait to go back... i dislike cement.

  • I find it incredible that there are those who discredit this as fake based on the fact that he couldn't have electricity to film. To all generation Y and below: Film cameras could be spring as well as electrically driven. Small cameras like he used to film this were wind-up affairs. You literally wound a clock spring to to drive it. This was before the days of video and especially i-crap. I think the camera was the only piece of technology he took with him.

  • This is my retirement plan for real and I'm planning it day by day. Only 10 years to go then I will be in this place. My only concern is food. Anyone know what he eats??

  • @rayndalrenfrow He caught a lot of fish, raised a small kitchen garden, usually shot one mountain sheep a year, and had his friend, Babe, fly other provisions in. Babe flew campers and hunters to different locations and would often stop in and bring his mail and other packages. So, seek out a bush pilot and make good friend with him and build your cabin in close proximity to his flight path. Good luck.

  • @mindeloman thanks for that info. This is what I figured about him having stuff flown in. I am going to try and have that to a minimum if I can. I have been looking at land semi close to small towns. Around 10-20 miles or so if I needed to hike in.

  • @rayndalrenfrow You are very welcome. Although stuff was flown it, it was a very sporadic affair. What I do know is that his diet was very basic. Be ready to eat the same thing day after day. Also, Dick Proenneke was from the WWII/depression generation. He grew up figuring out how to make things work. In WWII he was a carpenter in the Arny. He had an incredible skill set that took a lifetime to acquire. Self-evaluate your own skills and work on them. Best of luck to you.

  • @rayndalrenfrow you hunt and trap for your food why wait 10 years you can make a living at trapping and do it now....

  • @nitroexpress700 I am not wanting to make a living. I want to get off this fuedelism society that we have.

  • @rayndalrenfrow you from canada becaus if you are iv been trying to hire a business partner for my trap line and its alot harder than i thought to find a individual that can and will live like the man in this vidieo thers my self and few others...iv gotten over 300 emails from yuppies wanting to pretent they can do this then they realize they arnt coming back into a town and they shit them selves..

  • @nitroexpress700 No I'm from the states. I have been looking at places in Canada but haven't found anything yet. I am not interested in really working anymore but I do appreciate the offer. I am looking to get off the system and actually live on my own like they did in the old days

  • @rayndalrenfrow ahh thats basicly kinda whats this is im the only other person there .. but if you want true solitude thats fine id still look at alaska or canada any ways hope you find what your looking for.

  • @rayndalrenfrow Me, too!

  • Claude Dallas tried to live like this, look what happened there....

  • Bear Grills can survive, but this man truly LIVES.

  • Gusto here, I have this series too, Just awesome. What men were when men were men.

  • Awesome

  • I'd stop by to say hello to Ranger Brown. lol

  • great video, wish i could do that,

  • It's sad that the main guy died in 2003. What a great man. True craftsmanship and self sufficient.

  • is this the fill documentary??

  • hahaha i just bought it!

  • 2 dislikes on the video because the guys from dual survival watched this and were jealous.

  • If i dont get a job and my life falls to shit this is what im gonna do, but permanent.

  • @immasurvivor i agree with you man, peace from romania

  • @immasurvivor The tools cost quite a bit, though.

  • @MrBrucelee108 I have most of the knowledge i need, building a log-cabin might be taking on a bit much, i might just build a more advanced survival shelter.

  • @immasurvivor what is an advanced survival shelter?

  • @immasurvivor we all should consider this. because it may be alot of our futures.

  • @immasurvivor that's something I wondered about homeless or street people. Why don't they move into the woods? They just sit in the alley or whatever.

  • @packleader1215 fiiiinaly some one that has the same idea as me. moszt folk think im a\ cunt for saying it...

  • I love the way he talks

  • Les Stroud is jealous and also disliked this

  • Is there anywhere you can get the full movie of this? I already found part 1

  • i missed the building and ceiling of the roof and the gable ends

  • @SuperMax328

he made a ceiling fan powered by squirrels

  • some of the footage looks stock the bear the caribou still i love this series

  • lol@"camp robbers"

  • i wish i could do that screw school i'm leaving to the wilderness :D

  • Imagine this guys hand shake...fuck..

  • this is beautiful. thsi is a real man, this is what life is about

death to madison avenue and the new world order

watch "They Live" by John Carpenter

  • he's right about misusing the ax, too. LOL. as I have found out :).

  • this is incredible. I'd love to have the skills that he does

  • He's gonna miss the bear's company during winter......wow! Great wildlife filming too

  • I absolutely love the music on "Alone in the Wliderness, Part II." Can you tell me who the artist is? Is there a CD of this music?

  • This is a real man.

  • beautiful.

  • this is a great documentary

  • To generation 2012: look, this is what your grandfather, father/me are trying to tell ya about - being a man has absolutely nothing to do with the size of your bank account, or have any relation with girth. We’re talking about being faced with any situation and saying “yes, I can do it!”. Think you can’t peer across Mt Everest’s summit? Wondering if you’ll ever be able to venture the deepest abyss? Well, WTF! Go do it damn it! You have only one life to live, and no one else will live it for you!

  • @TheGreedyGlutton True words my friend. I'm only 15 at the moment but I love bush craft and I desire and will see the wonders this world has to offer :).

  • @preston9019 May I ask: just what are you planning on fixing?

  • @TheGreedyGlutton thats what im thinking all the time!

  • @TheGreedyGlutton you name says it all brother, your name says it all.

  • @jeditight

    Do you mind elaborating?

  • @TheGreedyGlutton So true. I wish that all those hipsters got off all that stupid glitter and see what beauty nature holds in it.

  • @TheGreedyGlutton thanks for snapping me out of it

  • @TheGreedyGlutton thats how i live my life and i only 16

  • @TheGreedyGlutton The beauty of becoming a man is that that law can apply to anything.

Wanna write a book helping the human race and putting it on the right path? You can do it!

  • Funny that you mention that - I'm actually currently in the process of working on an autobiography. It will include: Growing up in an alcoholic family and experiencing foster care. Discovering mother nature and 2-years of living amongst the stars. To a failed marriage. And, Me trying to convince myself that it's important that I read Darwin's Origin of Species.

  • @TheGreedyGlutton Now I don't know if it will "change the human race", but I hope that at least it'll be inspiring.

More than likely though, if the book is miraculously somehow published it'll be found in the comedy section. =P

    Thanks for your inspiration!

  • @TheGreedyGlutton they're more interested in texting

  • He films himself. lol

  • He's not alone, theres a cameraman

  • @FreshGalaxy he filmed himself.

  • He is my hero! Amazing!

  • @2:34...

    Look at those fucking spoons

  • outstanding story, getting the DVD soon

  • Epicness at its finest.

  • this guy is a boss

  • Who did the filming?

  • What I'd like to know is how the hell he eats, given the calories needed to survive.

  • Thumbs up if you would rather watch a TV series on this than Bridzillas or another show about the Kardashians

  • @TheGrayman1234

Amen, THIS is what reality TV should be!

  • @TheGrayman1234

Way to bring that stupid bitches name where it has no place. She doesn't need to market herself when she has tools like you to do it for her.

  • @TheGrayman1234 i honestly have no idea what/who bridzillas or the kardashians are

  • @TheGrayman1234 Fuck yeah.

  • @TheGrayman1234 id rather they sent the kardashians to live in the cabin in alaska to be honest,

  • If Santa doesn't put this under the tree for me this year, I'm buying the DVD the day after. :)

  • Gosh darn it that is so cool! :-D

  • I kind of struggle with wanting to do this, but knowing i would miss some of the comforts of having electricity and running water. So i think the best thing to do is to buy a piece of property that has that campground feel to it, build a nice cabin on a foundation so have lots of room. If i had the money to do it up front i would prefer to just use solar and stay off the grid, vut it does cost a fair amount if you use a lot of power.. I care more about what i'm living on then what im living in..

  • A magnificent man!

  • @SouthronComfort They would probably drone strike you and say you were a terrostist or the leader of a religious cult who had sex with kids and stockpiled weapons...Hope i didnt go too far but, you asked.....

  • @SouthronComfort You would probably be looked at as some kind of civil outcast, especially if you had a couple weapons in your cabin.. I would love to do what this man did, with a couple solar panels and maybe a small windmill you would have all the comforts of city living..

  • Is there anywhere i can see the other video's on-line?? I have the first video 'Alone in the Wilderness', i didn't even know there were more movies.. I saw the special on PBS a few years ago, and found a place on-line where you can get the book and all movies for like $100 or more, i absolutely love this first movie and would really enjoy seeing the other's, but they are a little pricey to purchase... Anyone know where i can see or dl a full version of all these movies??

  • @afghi420 Hello PBS just had a fund raiser on two days ago and showed the whole second video keep and eye out they may show it again sat. nite if not the producer is selling it on Ebay

  • @swivelgate Really? I have seen a fundraiser on for Dick Proenneke quite a few years ago now, i don't remember seeing the second film though, maybe this is a different one. I actually have all of the movies now, except the second "alone in the wilderness".. I found a spot that let me download the movies, im glad i did and didn't end up paying for them. One of the films has Dick in it for like 3 minutes, another film is the same as the first only with Dick's voice.. Think i will order the book:)

  • What about in the summer? The state bird of Alaska? The mosquito! How dose he survive???? COOL

  • Why does they build the chimneys outside of the houses?

In Finland we build them center in the houses to get as much of heat energy as possible.

  • Saw the full episode on PBS last night, awesome. The first one is still my favourite though.

  • im so doing this. take a month to live in the wild.

  • I would in a second. Also 1 person hates this.

  • we should all be living like this , no fucking stress ,

  • @MR1QUEST Follow your heart

  • Music from heaven starts @ 5:58. It plays until about 6:48.

  • 2:58, thats what you call precision

  • @1337holiday That tool is called a splitting maul. They are typically not sharp, just wedge shaped. I have whacked my hand doing just that and the only damage was from blunt trauma =)

  • They don't build them like this anymore.

  • calls em camp robbers when he shows up but 24 years down the road those whiskey jacks are his best friends... CLASSIC

  • I think im amazed the most by the fireplace he built

  • @TheAbe1212 WTF?

  • alex supertramp saw this and disliked.because he didnt se it sooner

  • bear grylls is jealous and disliked this.

  • That would be very cool to do that and jw how did he built the fireplace ad chimney ?

  • @bmaximize He built the fireplace with rocks collected from around the lake and 6 bags of cement he had flown in. He carved a form for the arch and a collapsible wood and cardboard form he created. In his journal, he seems to had a little worry in building it, since it wasn't what he was used to doing. It worked in the end though.

His book is at least as enjoyable to read as this is to watch. Highly recommended.

PS, he estimated that his investment in the cabin was $50.00

  • @Billsman43 $50 in 1967 is about $300 in today's money - more if you factor in the cost of fuel his bush pilot friend used to deliver supplies to him. Not to take anything away from Proenneke.

  • @jtschau $300 isn't bad for a homestead :). He was purposeful and deliberate in using materials off the land for construction. Outside of the cement, some spikes for securing the nails, and tar paper and polyethylene for the roof, it was made of things found around the area. He debated using the tar paper and plastic.

I don't know how much Babe Alsworth charged through the years. His journal notes that he hadn't charged him for flying him in, or the grocery runs, not initially at least.

  • I think all those kids in "skinny jeans" should be forced to watch this. that guys a true man.

  • @samrhaley Unfortunately, they'd likely just call it 'gay' and go back to twittering about how their parents are ruining their social standing for not buying them a $300 pair of shoes.

  • I tried to use a hand auger and ended up with blisters after 2 holes in 1 log. This guy must've been tough as nails....

  • He did this at the age of 51... I know what I will attempt to do at 51.

  • THIS TYPE OF LIFE IS MY IDEAL LIFE

    WHAT TRANQUILITY AND PEACE

    THE REAL MAN

  • A true American.

  • im jealouss of dick proenneke i want to live just like this....

  • @joec123able THEN GO DO IT NOTHING STOPING YOU BUT YOU GOOD LUCK.

  • @serger2010 alot of things are

  • This man inspired me so much. He's been a hero of mine for years. Funny how you can miss someone so much, that you never even had a conversation with.... Anyhow, rest in peace "ole buddy".

  • @PremierArizonaRealty I think that's awesome that you got to know him. I would have really liked to have met him. He's been a hero of mine for years.

  • to order a copy of this program shut up bitch!

  • Having recently read the book "One Man's Wilderness," about this man's first year in Alaska, I really noitce how well this video complements what I read about.

With our country quickly plunging into economic depression and slowly becoming a socialistic dictatorship, I often dream about fleeing to the northern woodlands and building my own little cabin on the shore of some unnamed glacial lake.

  • i remember watching this video when i was 14 yrs old and i was like wow i would like to do that, live out there of course i would bring my wife and my bible..

  • Mr. Proenneke is truly a remarkable man. I know the first song is "Invocation" by Lisa Lynne and Georege Tortorelli. Does anybody know any of the other songs?

  • Amazing guy, where is part 3?

  • @foxeyfreddie Part 2 is a new release

  • did yall see how he split that tough piece of wood? pay attention to it....you flip it mid air and make it land on the sledge end first.... let all the weight do the job...

  • I love how hes just like "Yeah, carved a spoon out of a log. No big deal." Sometimes I wish I could live like that.

  • @screaminghellion You can do anything man ,, if you set your mind to it and i know its hard to really subconsciously understand that advice because We`ve heard so many times ,, you must have a clear mind and seperate youself from all the things you dont need when you only NEED them and the things you need normally you shouldnt take for granit and do all this with a clear mind and do everything you do for a reason not because you want to or because TODAY`S society expects you to man .

  • ill remember him forever

  • god bless dick proenneke

  • Where is part 3?

  • @Mr101martin this is the second movie, not part. hes only showing a sample from each movie.

  • @skaterdude10001 ok thanks

  • Just shows us , it may be easier to retire into the bush if you had his drive and endurance. Reminds me a of a old show called "Grizly Adams."

  • Wow ! Such a peaceful video . Many thanks to you Swere Bob .

    fabian strategy

  • Dick Proenneke has my utmost respect. To be able to devote that amount of time and energy, single handed, to that job takes guts and fortitude that most people these days just don't have. We've become soft, pampered and are now without the basic skills which would allow us to survive in the same environment for any length of time. As much as the things you do see in the video, are the ones you don't. An outstanding man - there should be more like him and I wish I were one of them.

  • funny you say that , that's what they said about john denver singing colorado rocky mountain high. that the guitar was an extension of his arm. kindred spirits.

  • I have never seen a man who could swing an axe like he does, like its an extension of his arm.

  • What a hardass.

  • just give me internet and i would totally go all survival lol, this dude is good with that fucking hatchet though haha. So he doesnt eat the Caribou I guess? he was all 'I'm glad they survived the hunting season' idk

  • That guy is badass

  • Cry baby..... "I had to spend money. wahhhh wahhh". stupid cheapskate. do us a favor you whining bitch and jump off a cliff, its free, which is your price range morningsdefeat.
