You literally wound a clock spring to to drive it. This was before the days of video and especially i-crap. I think the camera was the only piece of technology he took with him.
This is my retirement plan for real and I'm planning it day by day. Only 10 years to go then I will be in this place. My only concern is food. Anyone know what he eats??
@rayndalrenfrow He caught a lot of fish, raised a small kitchen garden, usually shot one mountain sheep a year, and had his friend, Babe, fly other provisions in. Babe flew campers and hunters to different locations and would often stop in and bring his mail and other packages. So, seek out a bush pilot and make good friend with him and build your cabin in close proximity to his flight path. Good luck.
@mindeloman thanks for that info. This is what I figured about him having stuff flown in. I am going to try and have that to a minimum if I can. I have been looking at land semi close to small towns. Around 10-20 miles or so if I needed to hike in.
@rayndalrenfrow You are very welcome. Although stuff was flown it, it was a very sporadic affair. What I do know is that his diet was very basic. Be ready to eat the same thing day after day. Also, Dick Proenneke was from the WWII/depression generation. He grew up figuring out how to make things work. In WWII he was a carpenter in the Arny. He had an incredible skill set that took a lifetime to acquire. Self-evaluate your own skills and work on them. Best of luck to you.

@MrBrucelee108 I have most of the knowledge i need, building a log-cabin might be taking on a bit much, i might just build a more advanced survival shelter.
@immasurvivor that's something I wondered about homeless or street people. Why don't they move into the woods? They just sit in the alley or whatever.

Funny that you mention that - I'm actually currently in the process of working on an autobiography. It will include: Growing up in an alcoholic family and experiencing foster care. Discovering mother nature and 2-years of living amongst the stars. To a failed marriage. And, Me trying to convince myself that it's important that I read Darwin's Origin of Species.
@MrRower17 wrote:"he did himself. set up all the cameras and redid all his actions just to document it"
But I've seen camera motion when he's in the frame. I'm not saying "fake!" or saying the whole thing is worthless, I just think he had help with the filming.
I kind of struggle with wanting to do this, but knowing i would miss some of the comforts of having electricity and running water. So i think the best thing to do is to buy a piece of property that has that campground feel to it, build a nice cabin on a foundation so have lots of room. If i had the money to do it up front i would prefer to just use solar and stay off the grid, vut it does cost a fair amount if you use a lot of power.. I care more about what i'm living on then what im living in..

@1337holiday That tool is called a splitting maul. They are typically not sharp, just wedge shaped. I have whacked my hand doing just that and the only damage was from blunt trauma =)
@bmaximize He built the fireplace with rocks collected from around the lake and 6 bags of cement he had flown in. He carved a form for the arch and a collapsible wood and cardboard form he created. In his journal, he seems to had a little worry in building it, since it wasn't what he was used to doing. It worked in the end though.
His book is at least as enjoyable to read as this is to watch. Highly recommended.
PS, he estimated that his investment in the cabin was $50.00
@Billsman43 $50 in 1967 is about $300 in today's money - more if you factor in the cost of fuel his bush pilot friend used to deliver supplies to him. Not to take anything away from Proenneke.
@jtschau $300 isn't bad for a homestead :). He was purposeful and deliberate in using materials off the land for construction. Outside of the cement, some spikes for securing the nails, and tar paper and polyethylene for the roof, it was made of things found around the area. He debated using the tar paper and plastic.
I don't know how much Babe Alsworth charged through the years. His journal notes that he hadn't charged him for flying him in, or the grocery runs, not initially at least.
@samrhaley Unfortunately, they'd likely just call it 'gay' and go back to twittering about how their parents are ruining their social standing for not buying them a $300 pair of shoes.
This man inspired me so much. He's been a hero of mine for years. Funny how you can miss someone so much, that you never even had a conversation with.... Anyhow, rest in peace "ole buddy".
Having recently read the book "One Man's Wilderness," about this man's first year in Alaska, I really noitce how well this video complements what I read about.
With our country quickly plunging into economic depression and slowly becoming a socialistic dictatorship, I often dream about fleeing to the northern woodlands and building my own little cabin on the shore of some unnamed glacial lake.
i remember watching this video when i was 14 yrs old and i was like wow i would like to do that, live out there of course i would bring my wife and my bible..
Mr. Proenneke is truly a remarkable man. I know the first song is "Invocation" by Lisa Lynne and Georege Tortorelli. Does anybody know any of the other songs?
did yall see how he split that tough piece of wood? pay attention to it....you flip it mid air and make it land on the sledge end first.... let all the weight do the job...
@screaminghellion You can do anything man ,, if you set your mind to it and i know its hard to really subconsciously understand that advice because We`ve heard so many times ,, you must have a clear mind and seperate youself from all the things you dont need when you only NEED them and the things you need normally you shouldnt take for granit and do all this with a clear mind and do everything you do for a reason not because you want to or because TODAY`S society expects you to man .
Dick Proenneke has my utmost respect. To be able to devote that amount of time and energy, single handed, to that job takes guts and fortitude that most people these days just don't have. We've become soft, pampered and are now without the basic skills which would allow us to survive in the same environment for any length of time. As much as the things you do see in the video, are the ones you don't. An outstanding man - there should be more like him and I wish I were one of them.
funny you say that , that's what they said about john denver singing colorado rocky mountain high. that the guitar was an extension of his arm. kindred spirits.
just give me internet and i would totally go all survival lol, this dude is good with that fucking hatchet though haha. So he doesnt eat the Caribou I guess? he was all 'I'm glad they survived the hunting season' idk
Cry baby..... "I had to spend money. wahhhh wahhh". stupid cheapskate. do us a favor you whining bitch and jump off a cliff, its free, which is your price range morningsdefeat.

@samrhaley Unfortunately, they'd likely just call it 'gay' and go back to twittering about how their parents are ruining their social standing for not buying them a $300 pair of shoes.

Mr. Proenneke is truly a remarkable man. I know the first song is "Invocation" by Lisa Lynne and Georege Tortorelli. Does anybody know any of the other songs?

screaminghellion 6 months ago

I have never seen a man who could swing an axe like he does, like its an extension of his arm.
