@IcyScythe Right, because when someone says "day" they surely mean "possibly a day, but possibly millions of years." Right? Depends on what your agenda is, and what you as a fundamentalist are trying to prove.
Simply put one of the greatest television series ever, and perhaps one of the most important as well. There are two people in this world who made me interested in science: my father and Mr. Sagan. My father laid the foundation for it, Mr. Sagan solidified it.
Carl Sagan woke me up to the wider world outside our globe back in 1983.. His series inspired me to become a researcher and a student of life. He did dramatically alter my life to learn so much more in my existence.
Carl Sagan has inspired me, a teenager who smokes weed ;) to study physics and chemistry and aspire to be an astro-physicist. This coming from a guy who, last year before seeing this series i hated all science classes. Since watching this series i have learnt all i could about science and the universe around us and it is astonishing. Thank you so much Carl Sagan you are truly one of the greatest men in the last century and i would give anything to be able to have a long discussion with you.
@sirsagan They never showed the Cosmos video in any of the schools I went to and I think that was pathetic that education institutions around me have missed this epic work. Shame I say shame!
@VideoAssembly Cosmos should be mandatory for everyone over the age of 10 to watch, maybe that way the world would be full of more inquisitive, wondering people who understand that the world they live in is not everything and that the Cosmos is much grander than anyone could imagine.
@sirsagan You should also understand that Carl Sagan had a reputation for the use of mary jane, because it opened his mind to new insights. Which, considering the awesome mind the man had, must have been truly epic.
So, do use that which you must, while being a true scientist.
@NeilRoy65 you say that as if you just didnt try to continue your arguments with psychosavant :| And the fact you're not willing to give us your reasons for belief only further our own opinions of you. If you can't state your logic, then its not that hard to deem you illogical or unintelligent, you act as if our judgments towards you are not your fault when in fact you give very little to defend the reason behind your thoughts.
Um... it's natural selection... that means nature does the selection. See how that works? They are selected through natural means by the basic laws of inevitability. If you flip a coin a 1000 times, nature selects that it should land fairly evenly on both sides. It's not intelligent intervention.
oh... And it's been proven that evolution exists for many centuries. The theory of evolution doesn't explain that evolution occurs.. it's explains "how" and "why" it occurs.
The theory of gravity doesn't explain that gravity exists, it explain how and why it exists. Cell theory, music theory, color theory, atomic theory... they don't explain that their subject exists... they explain how and why they are what they are... their subject is proven to exist.
@NeilRoy65 "arrive at this conclusion quite logically and intelligently" you have yet to state what logic and intelligence you believe, WHY dont you believe in evolution? is it too complex for you? do you think things just dont work that way just because? please enlighten us
@NeilRoy65 'Theory' is the highest standard that science awards to a concept. Would you disagree with Gravity or Heliocentricity because they're just "Theories"? Its saddening to hear someone say confidently that they will never be persuaded one way or the other. Thats the sound of the human spirit dying.
@NeilRoy65 be as it may that evolution has never been "proven" but its still pretty logical to consider that DNA has found in fossils and are linked with modern animals including us. If you're one of the people who goes around saying "If people decended from monkys, then why are there still monkeys? herp derp" its almost like you're saying "If cats decended from saber tooth tigers, how can there be lions and jaguars? derp". its called natural selection <.<
@NeilRoy65 ~continued~ not only natural selection but the separation of species encourages differences in newer species. have you seen how many different kinds of birds there are? lizards? cats? dogs? monkeys?...people? or are you the kinda ignorant person who sits around neglecting logic and reason as if its some kinda hoo-haa that doesnt make any sense to you? "why buy into something if it doesnt make sense" ...that saying it goes in both directions.
The Universe is beyond awesome nothing measures to its mystery and beauty. It makes us curious to wonder when human beings will travel to the distant Suns like our own. Carl Sagan freed so many minds; his legacy will linger forever like a star.
so true, his nature is not to look at yourself and you inevitable end. but love the fact you have the chance to look and looking is the entire point of it all. observe and love x
Carl Sagan has inspired me to be a more skeptical person. Being more skeptical has helped to identify wonk claims, pseudo-scientific demonstrations (I'm looking at you scientology and the Ghost hunters) And actually enjoy the world as it truly is.
it is meaningless to waste time arguing about or around carl. it is more appropriate to think, have a hit, contemplate, and then figure out that you havent figured out how small you are if you are arguing online. your speculations are of idiocy. grow a few more cells and lets discuss helping the 15 year old
@mtavares92 wrong, carl sagan said he didn't believe in a god because there was no proof, but he said he couldn't say there wasn't a god because there was no proof. he was agnostic. more of a damned if you do, and damned if you don't belief system. read more than his best sellers.
@RestInPieces777 Well you're clearly part of that 99 % of human beings that he was constantly mentionning.
you fucking pussified moron shithead.
Go fuck yourself. little shit.
how could you even BEGIN to describ carlin as simple minded. He argued against EVERYTHING. he didn't share the common mindset of most americans. He was critic of things, and he QUESTIONED what he was taught and heard.
@mtavares92 You know, I used to be like you. I used to be a major George Carlin fan. I used to consider anyone who disagreed with him as part of the group of stupid people he was always mentioning. But then something happened, at around age fifteen.
I grew up.
He was not an intellectual. He was not scientifically literate or politically aware. He was incredibly naive and simple-minded, as are most of his cult-like fans. As a comedian, by definition, nobody should take him seriously anyway.
@RestInPieces777 Well no wonder you started hatin' Carlin at the age of fifteen.
You probably only liked him before that because of his fart jokes.
You didn't grew up.. You think you did, but in truth you didn't. You did what society wants you to do, become just like the ordinary, SIMPLE-MINDED man.
Politically aware? I think he was. Scientifically literate? quite a lot actually.
@RestInPieces777 How can you say he was simple-minded when he questionned what he was taught, he didn't just "roll over" and accept things.
He used his own judgment to forge his own opinion on various subjects, and he had this unique talent to joking in the way human beings behave, putting it in a funny way, and also at the same time making a very intelectual point about our existence and our way of life.
George Carlin was a fucking genius, and you're the naive simple-minded creature
@mtavares92 THAT is an apt statement. In terms of his humor and political views, it can be argued Carlin was on the level of Sagan in his own way, and thats no underestimation! The man was practically a prophet he predicted so much under the guise of humor :O
@theenoahray Agnosticism and atheism are not mutually exclusive concepts. Agnosticism merely refers to whether you "know" if the god exists or not. You can lack a belief in the gods (atheist), but be unsure of whether any actually exist (agnostic). That would make him an agnostic atheist. You can be an agnostic theist too.
@mtavares92 well, technically he called himself an agnostic, saying that if God could be considered the sum of all the physical laws in the universe, then yes he believed in that kind of "god"
@mtavares92 I don't know asshole, Sagan said it, not me. Look it up, he's quoted as saying that exactly: "the sum of all the physical laws in the universe"
And I'm willing to bet that he's way out of your league in terms of intelligence.
The problem with you people is that you don't learn before you talk. You just spew whatever garbage is on the tip of your tongue.
@shirkmaster13 maybe because sagan lived in the same shit religious zealot society as I did, except he didn't get over the subject as quickly as I did.
There shoulnd't even be a scientific possibilty for the existence of god And, as Sagan well knows it, the only kind of god there could possibly exist is "the sum of all physical laws in the universe". But that isn't god, that isn't a all powerfull all wise omniscient supernatural man living in heaven.
@mtavares92 well, then what it comes down to is a difference of opinions/views. It's mtavares92 vs Carl Sagan, the opinion of some random person vs the opinion of one of the greatest and most influential scientists to live this century.
@shirkmaster13 So you will be siding with Sagan because he is Sagan, not because you agree with what he said, and you will disagree with me, regardless of what I say, just because I'm some random person.
A little bit more respect for other scientists and Carl Sagans widow, just like he respected others, the "harmony of worlds" shows his attitude completely.
I miss Carl Sagan. I loved his interview with Ted Turner, everyone should see it. He believed so strongly in his righteous world views and put forward his political opinion on what is wrong with the way society is run in North America. An opinion, that if every human being followed, would make this planet such a peaceful and truly glorious place for everyone. Carl Sagan's voice will never die, I will always watch and read your words Carl! :)

@mmmikeyxx I am glad other people see it that way too, curiosity should not be discouraged nor replaced with dogma.

Carl Sagan has inspired me to be a more skeptical person. Being more skeptical has helped to identify wonk claims, pseudo-scientific demonstrations (I'm looking at you scientology and the Ghost hunters) And actually enjoy the world as it truly is.
danschaoticmind 1 year ago
The result of the cold war and arm race:
1. Landing on the moon and NASA technology
2. Jet engines and the aviation industry as you know it
3. Radar
4. Computing power (which runs this Internet you like so much)
You're welcome.
musicmind9 1 year ago
@musicmind9 You vastly over simplify those technologies.
1. The technology that holds the fuel for those rockets comes from mining (vacuum) and German beer brewing (refrigeration).
2. Ditto for #1 and I believe the Wright brothers were bicycle repairmen.
3. A guy named Watson Watt actually used this first for its domestic purpose of finding storms in 1924.
4. Has it's origins census tabulation (1880s), which got it's tech from the textile industry, storing data in punch cards.
albinoman13bt 1 year ago
@musicmind9 Results of Nazi Germany:
1: Cars for the general public
2: Highways
3: Numerous developments in weapons programs.
Doesn't mean it was a good thing. All things bring forth good and bad, it's about the balance. The Cold War could have destroyed humanity.

@jursle It's a natural arms race, aka the mechanism of evolution.
I'm not trying to discuss things in terms of good or bad.

it is meaningless to waste time arguing about or around carl. it is more appropriate to think, have a hit, contemplate, and then figure out that you havent figured out how small you are if you are arguing online. your speculations are of idiocy. grow a few more cells and lets discuss helping the 15 year old

@mikeaxle1980 Wrong. carl sagan was an atheist ...
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 wrong, carl sagan said he didn't believe in a god because there was no proof, but he said he couldn't say there wasn't a god because there was no proof. he was agnostic. more of a damned if you do, and damned if you don't belief system. read more than his best sellers.
theenoahray 1 year ago
@theenoahray "more of a damned"
Wtf does that mean? He will go to hell because he wasn't sure if there was or not a god?
mtavares92 1 year ago
@theenoahray Then again, that's religion 1 on 1
- "You believe in God ?"
-"No."
BANG. Dead
-"You believe in God?" -Yes -"Do you believe in my God?" -No. BANG

@mtavares92 Carlin was a simple-minded faggot, please stop quoting him on a Carl Sagan video. Thanks.
RestInPieces777 1 year ago
@RestInPieces777 Well you're clearly part of that 99 % of human beings that he was constantly mentionning.
you fucking pussified moron shithead.
Go fuck yourself. little shit.
how could you even BEGIN to describ carlin as simple minded. He argued against EVERYTHING. he didn't share the common mindset of most americans. He was critic of things, and he QUESTIONED what he was taught and heard.
That is not simple-minded. ON THE CONTRARY
LOL
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 You know, I used to be like you. I used to be a major George Carlin fan. I used to consider anyone who disagreed with him as part of the group of stupid people he was always mentioning. But then something happened, at around age fifteen.
I grew up.
He was not an intellectual. He was not scientifically literate or politically aware. He was incredibly naive and simple-minded, as are most of his cult-like fans. As a comedian, by definition, nobody should take him seriously anyway.
RestInPieces777 1 year ago
@RestInPieces777 Well no wonder you started hatin' Carlin at the age of fifteen.
You probably only liked him before that because of his fart jokes.
You didn't grew up.. You think you did, but in truth you didn't. You did what society wants you to do, become just like the ordinary, SIMPLE-MINDED man.
Politically aware? I think he was. Scientifically literate? quite a lot actually.
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 At the age of fiteen you don't even posess a mental capability to understand the meaning behind his words.
you were probably already shielded from any possible counter-argument to your shit way of life, that's probably why you stopped listenning to him.
mtavares92 1 year ago
@RestInPieces777 How can you say he was simple-minded when he questionned what he was taught, he didn't just "roll over" and accept things.
He used his own judgment to forge his own opinion on various subjects, and he had this unique talent to joking in the way human beings behave, putting it in a funny way, and also at the same time making a very intelectual point about our existence and our way of life.
George Carlin was a fucking genius, and you're the naive simple-minded creature
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 THAT is an apt statement. In terms of his humor and political views, it can be argued Carlin was on the level of Sagan in his own way, and thats no underestimation! The man was practically a prophet he predicted so much under the guise of humor :O
shkotay 1 year ago
@theenoahray Agnosticism and atheism are not mutually exclusive concepts. Agnosticism merely refers to whether you "know" if the god exists or not. You can lack a belief in the gods (atheist), but be unsure of whether any actually exist (agnostic). That would make him an agnostic atheist. You can be an agnostic theist too.
nylonhead116 1 year ago 2
@mtavares92 well, technically he called himself an agnostic, saying that if God could be considered the sum of all the physical laws in the universe, then yes he believed in that kind of "god"
shirkmaster13 1 year ago
@shirkmaster13 And how the fuck does that constitute a god?
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 I don't know asshole, Sagan said it, not me. Look it up, he's quoted as saying that exactly: "the sum of all the physical laws in the universe"
And I'm willing to bet that he's way out of your league in terms of intelligence.
The problem with you people is that you don't learn before you talk. You just spew whatever garbage is on the tip of your tongue.
shirkmaster13 1 year ago
@shirkmaster13 maybe because sagan lived in the same shit religious zealot society as I did, except he didn't get over the subject as quickly as I did.
There shoulnd't even be a scientific possibilty for the existence of god And, as Sagan well knows it, the only kind of god there could possibly exist is "the sum of all physical laws in the universe". But that isn't god, that isn't a all powerfull all wise omniscient supernatural man living in heaven.
That's the universe
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 well, then what it comes down to is a difference of opinions/views. It's mtavares92 vs Carl Sagan, the opinion of some random person vs the opinion of one of the greatest and most influential scientists to live this century.
I'll side with Sagan.
shirkmaster13 1 year ago
@shirkmaster13 So you will be siding with Sagan because he is Sagan, not because you agree with what he said, and you will disagree with me, regardless of what I say, just because I'm some random person.
Well this conversation is over, you're a moron
mtavares92 1 year ago
@mtavares92 LOLOLOLOL ya you're right, you win, you are smarter than me, I should just give up
