  • that was some of the weirdest sounding applause ive ever heard!

  • This must be the best recording of William Tell ever made.....

  • it IS!!

  • master......

  • Yes, imagine having those cellists play the opening of Cavaradossi's aria, "E lucevan le stelle," in the last act of Tosca. I've had cello quartets that made me want to wince onstage, and once I actually turned away from the audience to hide such a reaction to what was coming at me from the pit. This is heavenly...

  • Who has the best brass section? Berlin Phil. or the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? I would love to see CSO perform this. Trombones here sound a little muffled at the well-known storm scene.

  • @861Sailor You might want to check out the Montreal Symphony Orchestra with Charles Dutoit. Now that recording is out of this world!

  • amazing mindblowing and wonderfull.

  • I did this in band!!

  • back in the days when it was a male dominated scene

  • 4:22...now that's rock and roll. The guys sawing away at their instruments as savagely as Angus Young of ACDC thrashing his guitar during one of his solos.

  • what kind of a f***ed up claping is that in the beginning?

  • This is so freaking fun to play... even though the violas (what I play) don't get too much fun stuff.

  • Quick question, does anyone know who the Flutist is at 6:00, the one with the beard and glasses and looks like Obi-wan Kenobi?

  • can someone please tell me the name of the cellist beside the principal cellist. my dad knows somebody who looks exactly like him and would like to know what his name is. thanks

  • What is my chance to become so good? 0?

  • @BeatySword Not at all... work hard, practice hard. You can do it too. You'll discover your own voice and excel. That's the beauty of music. She is a generous goddess.

  • @BeatySword That depends on how badly you want it. Talent alone is not enough. Hard work is our best hope.

  • @karlakor Do I really have to go to study years and years on high schools and stuff for this? Is there no other way? :S

  • Karajan, los genios como él no debería morir...

  • is that Ottomar Borwitzky playing the first cello part?

  • yes

  • Karajan is a very good director!

  • The trombones sound horrible. Well not the trombones, but the recording of the trombones. Wish they had better sound recording devices back then

  • @atombomber25

I agree. That's because Karajan looks like an abusive act to me.

Also, while conducting, he looks as if he would act mean to his students.

  • The principal cellist at 4:13-4:20 is great!

  • best-known conductor

  • @ginamontez57 yes, best known. But for me, Toscanini always wins.

  • la carne de gallina.

  • The cellists reminds me of Newman from Seinfeld. Great playingg!!

  • hey had cameras in 1983????!!!!!

  • @iamachickenwing

Absolutely! Also farrrrrr back as well.

Starting at the late 1890's....i think

  • can anyone temme who's that cellist i mean the one who plays the master role of cello here ......

    he is mindblasting.

  • @jeffreykevinguitar

Ottomar Borwitzky, born in 1930 in Hamburg; studied with Bernhard Günther, Arthur Troester, and Paul Grümmer. First principal cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic 1956-1993.

  • @fafnis Era Eberhard Finke il "secondo" di Borwitsky in questa splendida esecuzione di Herbert

  • great piece! haha this guy looks like the skinnier version of Newman.

  • good performance, unbearable audio quality. Sounds like a snow storm at the beginning. ..

  • Impossible...fantastic!!!

  • Awesome!! wow :0

  • hands up: who's having freaking goosebumps at 5:10, too?

  • excellent!!!!!

  • Bravo!!!

  • Is it the recording quality or do the trombones sound really crass at their first entrance it seems to fix itself though

    such a great orchestra

  • yeah, the audio encoding isn't very good, but what a performance!

  • ya, the brass messed up their big entrance. weakest part of the performance.

perhaps if Karajan would conduct better they would have held together. he may have some great recordings, but his conducting style would be very irritating. people not sitting in the front row would have a hard time seeing him wagging his pinky finger for the flute, and trembling his lip for the drum

  • @246trinitrotoluene

i thought so!! i was like, why is this so weird??? lol

  • Comment removed

  • this one looks more like a battle

  • He truly is the greatest conductor of the 20th century. But looking at the future, I rest my gaze upon the living. Mariss Jansons for example, who currently conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He is very talented.

Also, this christmas, on the 25th, there will be a live internet broadcast of them, done by MonteVerdi. ELINA GARANCA will also be there. Check out:

for some exclusive content and info.

    Kind Regards,

    Willem

  • and the best director...

  • I like those cellists in the opening. They played it with full of expression.

  • This was, without any doubt, the best orchestra in the World.

  • Yes, it was......

  • i think it still is

  • @fafnis And they'd been with Karajan for so long that he hardly had to move any more in order for them to know what he wanted from them, which was increasingly important, as he became less and less capable of movement as the years went by...

  • @fafnis and still is.......

  • @laianemesis

    It WAS???????

  • i think this orchestra was beyond human's ability, perhaps at an alien level.

Perhaps we don't even have a word to describe how perfect this orchestra was.. I'm unfortunate that I wasn't born at this time period to watch in real concert.......
