Yes, imagine having those cellists play the opening of Cavaradossi's aria, "E lucevan le stelle," in the last act of Tosca. I've had cello quartets that made me want to wince onstage, and once I actually turned away from the audience to hide such a reaction to what was coming at me from the pit. This is heavenly...
Who has the best brass section? Berlin Phil. or the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? I would love to see CSO perform this. Trombones here sound a little muffled at the well-known storm scene.
4:22...now that's rock and roll. The guys sawing away at their instruments as savagely as Angus Young of ACDC thrashing his guitar during one of his solos.
can someone please tell me the name of the cellist beside the principal cellist. my dad knows somebody who looks exactly like him and would like to know what his name is. thanks
@BeatySword Not at all... work hard, practice hard. You can do it too. You'll discover your own voice and excel. That's the beauty of music. She is a generous goddess.
Ottomar Borwitzky, born in 1930 in Hamburg; studied with Bernhard Günther, Arthur Troester, and Paul Grümmer. First principal cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic 1956-1993.
ya, the brass messed up their big entrance. weakest part of the performance.
perhaps if Karajan would conduct better they would have held together. he may have some great recordings, but his conducting style would be very irritating. people not sitting in the front row would have a hard time seeing him wagging his pinky finger for the flute, and trembling his lip for the drum
He truly is the greatest conductor of the 20th century. But looking at the future, I rest my gaze upon the living. Mariss Jansons for example, who currently conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He is very talented.
Also, this christmas, on the 25th, there will be a live internet broadcast of them, done by MonteVerdi. ELINA GARANCA will also be there. Check out:
@fafnis And they'd been with Karajan for so long that he hardly had to move any more in order for them to know what he wanted from them, which was increasingly important, as he became less and less capable of movement as the years went by...
i think this orchestra was beyond human's ability, perhaps at an alien level.
Perhaps we don't even have a word to describe how perfect this orchestra was.. I'm unfortunate that I wasn't born at this time period to watch in real concert.......

This is so freaking fun to play... even though the violas (what I play) don't get too much fun stuff.

Quick question, does anyone know who the Flutist is at 6:00, the one with the beard and glasses and looks like Obi-wan Kenobi?

@BeatySword That depends on how badly you want it. Talent alone is not enough. Hard work is our best hope.

The trombones sound horrible. Well not the trombones, but the recording of the trombones. Wish they had better sound recording devices back then

@atombomber25
I agree. That's because Karajan looks like an abusive act to me.
Also, while conducting, he looks as if he would act mean to his students.
