Invading Somalia would actually be a LOT easier than invading Afghanistan. Simply because Somalia has an Ocean bordering it, which makes it very easy for troops to deploy there.
Also, Somalia doesn't have mountains like Afghanistan. Much of the country is flat, and the climate is decent.

It wasn't a proper invasion of the sort this guy is probably thinking about, i.e. one with tens of thousands of troops to place the country in lockdown and securing rule of law. It was more one of those "police operations" where small numbers of troops are sent to deal with a specific problem, and so they left when that became infeasible. Ethiopia just recently withdrew from Somalia (in 2009) without achieving any of her objectives. The warlord they wanted to rule over Somalia has stepped down. The new president (Sharif Sheikh Ahmed) who replaced him is one of the clerics they wanted to destroy a few months before. Some of the religious militants sided with the new president while the more hardcore militants blamed Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as a traitor for joining the people that overthrew them and promised to continue their attacks..
So, most Somalis are turning away in disgust with Al-Shabab. Al-Shabab is trying to coerce the civilians into supporting them (public executions, stoning innocent people to death, etc). They definitely need to be stopped. Even before they came, Somalis didn't worry about what to wear, what to watch, what to drink, or when to pray but these militants think they're bringing God's work. That's dangerous for a country that is predominantly secular.

Now with Al-Shabab, they don't tolerate criticism and the liberties of their own people. Invading Somalia would actually be a LOT easier than invading Afghanistan. Simply because Somalia has an Ocean bordering it, which makes it very easy for troops to deploy there.
Also, Somalia doesn't have mountains like Afghanistan. Much of the country is flat, and the climate is decent.

meh, the objective wasn't to rescue a downed helicopter pilot...it was to capture Aideed and to stabilize Somalia. Not only the guy who played a major role in Somalia's civil war escaped capture, he rallied his militias to fight against the nation that recently defeated Iraq's army in Gulf War I. The end result was the US left and the rest of the UN troops ran away.
Only Aideed's clan fought and yet American generals portray that little battle as Deltas Vs Somalia or Bin Laden aiding Somalis.

It wasn't a proper invasion of the sort this guy is probably thinking about, i.e. one with tens of thousands of troops to place the country in lockdown and securing rule of law. It was more one of those "police operations" where small numbers of troops are sent to deal with a specific problem, and so they left when that became infeasible. It may look like this is picking nits, but it isn't, a full invasion is a far more ambitious project and wouldn't get canceled due to a few deaths.

It was as recent as 2005 when religious clerics and Somali businessmen had enough with the warlords who terrorized Somalia for the past 14 years. Religious militants fought the warlords and chased them out. Some warlords were seen going into the Indian Ocean and being scooped away by American speeding boats and into a naval vessel off Somalia's coast.
With Bush's blessings, Ethiopia entered Somalia on 2006 and caused the moderate clerics to flee while the armed-wing zealots (Al-Shabab) stayed.

Ethiopia (Somalia's arch enemy) entered Somalia to get rid of the new religious government in Somalia and to prop-up the Western recognized Somali government (who was led by a warlord which Somalis distrusted). When the Ethiopians came into Somalia in order to force Somalis to kneel down for this unrecognized president (who played a vital role in the creation of Somalia's civil war), even people who didn't like the religious establishment joined in their ranks to oppose the Ethiopian army.

Ethiopia just recently withdrew from Somalia (in 2009) without achieving any of her objectives. The warlord they wanted to rule over Somalia has stepped down. The new president (Sharif Sheikh Ahmed) who replaced him is one of the clerics they wanted to destroy a few months before. Some of the religious militants sided with the new president while the more hardcore militants blamed Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as a traitor for joining the people that overthrew them and promised to continue their attacks..

So, most Somalis are turning away in disgust with Al-Shabab. Al-Shabab is trying to coerce the civilians into supporting them (public executions, stoning innocent people to death, etc). They definitely need to be stopped. Even before they came, Somalis didn't worry about what to wear, what to watch, what to drink, or when to pray but these militants think they're bringing God's work. That's dangerous for a country that is predominantly secular.

@wabdinur I thought that wearing hijab and a beard was obligitory in Islam, so why can't this be put into law? I thought Muslims were suppossed to live under the Shariah not man made law. Do you have proof that any of the people that were stoned were innocent? Why would a Muslim nation leagalize watching inapproriate television, bad music and alcohol? Do you know there is no such thing as secular Islam? Are you even a Muslim?

Wearing hijab and growing a beard is obligitory for all Muslims anyway. I don't see how a peice of cloth on your head or hair under your chin ever destroyed the quality of ones life. Al Shabaab actually brought stability to the region and gave land back to people who lost their property. In fact food supply even went up under Al Shabaab.

Islamic Courts were more reasonable and moderate (even America started to realize this) and when controversies arose (like the banning of soccer)-they would have a lively debate and take into the interests of the Somali people. Now with Al-Shabab, they don't tolerate criticism and the liberties of their own people. Yesterday, these religious militants were themselves militias and warlords...terrorizing the country with impunity. Now they do the same thing but in the name of God.

They just want to serve their Western masters and stay in power. All of Africa has tried secular democracy and the only thing that it has given the African people is empty bellies. I would love to see just one African nation not ruled by the West and I bet it will flourish.

It's not just the West...you got Arab and African influences inside Somalia also. That's why this civil war still rages for 20 years because all the Somali warring factions feel they're on the winning side and don't need to come to the negotiating table. The UN made a report stating that over 20 nations are implicit in breaking the arms embargo placed on Somalia. Some do it purely for the money and some governments are actually taking sides.

The moderate clerics who kept Al-Shabab on a leash (Al-Shabab was supposed to be an army unit) either fled or died when Ethiopia invaded and Al-Shabab regrouped and started to become more fanatical as the war continued. So when the Ethiopians left and their former masters (the moderate clerics) returned, Al-Shabab didn't want to listen to them.

The Taliban and anyone who wants religious law are ingnorant, conservative, and reactionary. Fox news is evil, but liberal compared to them. Supporting their return to power is equivalent to supporting the killing and abuse of women, Shia minorities, and other freethinking classes of Afghanistan that would develop it as a nation.

The U.S. will not invade Somalia as there is no economic/geo-political capital to be had. The U.S. government doesn't give a shit about eradicating terrorists. The 'war on terror' in Afghanistan is a euphemism for preserving a marxist government at the expense of the Mujaheddin. Ironically, during the 80s the U.S. gov. supported the Mujaheddin (and bin laden). More fucked up is how our gov. sucks off the saudi monarch despite its terrorism sponsoring and human rights abuses

Its much more than preserving a marxist government. Control of afghanistan is the only way to get access to the land locked regions of central asia (eg uzbekistan) which have the largest oil resources next to the middle east
You can only send get them out by running a pipeline through afghanistan.
No one in the right mind who understand real politics believes the US gives two shits about "helping" or spreading democracy. They fund and support dictators all over the world.

Bin Laden was never supported against the Sovietts, we supported Hezb-e Islami, Jamiat Islami, Hezb- Hektmyar, and HIH.
And the reason the soviets had such a hard time in Afghanistan is because "marxism" doesn't play with the rural tribes. Hafizullah Amin tried pushing communism past the Kabul but failed, and was killed by Soviet KGB/SF in the invasion.
The saudis will eventually run out of oil, and you'll see a different story there.
