cannonballs r def the best relatively cheap saxes on the market
i hav a "raven" tenor, and ive been lovin it since i got it 3 years ago. Im gettin a soprano soon, and its safe to say thats its gonna be a cannonball. The sound they make is so rich and moody...i love it.
I've seen a guy playing a tenor Cannonball live. It does have that old MkVI tone. Rich and moody. Depends on the mouthpiece/player of course. But sounded really good. An old vet once told me with a Conn the sound goes up, a MkVI the sound goes forward, and with a Yamaha the sound projects outwards - ie you can't hear yourself playing. That's why a lot of players like a Conn big bore.
I can't offer an opinion on the 82z because I haven't played one. It wasn't in my price range so I didn't bother trying it out. I'm pretty sure it's an excellent horn though. All I can say is that I'm more than happy with my Cannonballs. (My only complaint at this point is some minor key clicking on a couple of the lower keys, but I think my technician can remedy that easily enough).
I much prefered the cannonball. The 82Z is easier to play if you currently have any yamaha but give the cannonball a chance!! after trying these i went home with a p.mauriat (they are well worth trying too)
I have an EX which is essentially the same as a Z (I wouldn't say that if I hadn't tried them out side-by-side) and I love it to death. It's all personal taste, though.
Im gonna disagree I naturally sound horrible on a cannonball like there was NO comparison to the 82Z or 62 or most of the selmers (incudling a Mark 6) and the JK i ended up buying. I sound way better on my old yamaha 52 im not sure why just cant play on them i also dislike a lot of little things about it that are just personal things but that is just me
@Drew78 yea i have that same question, i favor cannonball cuz of the look and sound, but construction and durability wise , the yamaha probably is better...
@Drew78 the yamaha is great and is really depends on which cannonball your talking about. if your talking about the stone series than the cannonball would be the better sax, greater dynamic range, intonation, tone and feel. they are both great but the cannonball beat the yamaha in every catagory slightly.
Thanks again, but don't sell yourself short. I just listened to your version and I think it's lovely and quite interesting indeed. Mine is a very straight-forward interpretation with a simple harmony to the melody and a deliberately sparse backing of just percussion and bass. I liked the contrast of the guitar and flute on your version, especially between the solo sections.
I definitely think the Cannonballs are well worth the investment. You might still hear some negative comments about Cannonballs, but almost all of those come from people who have experience with the earlier models. The newer Cannonballs are vastly superior to the earlier ones, and superior to many of the better known professional brands as well. I have yet to hear a negative comment about the newer Cannonballs from anyone who actually knows enough about them to be a credible judge.
Nice sound.
Tx for posting.

Cannonball destroys an 82z.
But it's about what feels good to the player. I have the last year they still made Cannonballs in the U.S. and I LOVE it.

I like this version better. Not to take anything away from the other one. Your tone on the cannonball sounds so cool, 5 stars!

Very nice indeed. I'm now re-reading all the good advice you're giving me (maybe I'll frame it!).

Thank you, sir.
How's that tenor coming along? Still playing?
CooolJazzz 4 years ago
I am most certainly still playing. Even blew a couple of OK solos on stage recently at a jazz workshop. I sleep with my horn. Will stay in touch.

very nice... nothing like the sound of brass.
I miss so much the years my daughters were in marching band -- watching and hearing the youth get better during the season.
Your tones are tender, and the song full of memories..
Thank you for sharing your talent....
so lovely
