  • hey jin, i dont get how you put your "body frame" to punch. I've been trying to do this for days, but my punches still has no power in them, i use a heavy bag to train btw.

  • Dear Jin, I've started to understand how to use the mechanics. Thanks for your video. I still have one question. Is it possible to use this mechanic to punch fast? When I spar with my training partners. It seems that I take too much time in powering / setting up the punch.

  • awesome.'',wingchun

  • I don't like this distance restriction

  • I wish I was skinny so I can learn stuff like this

  • @CritYourFace no need to be skinny.

  • I would love to find someone in my area who could train me in the art of Wing Chun at an affordable or reasonable cost.

  • my dad used to be a tae kwon do...ist.....so hes probably wrong...hes told me to use the first two knuckles..not last 3?

  • @n00bGuitaristSays

They are both right--- TKD and Karate focus on STRAIGHT strike, using first two knuckles to land on the target can focus the pressure of the strike and most important: protect your wrist.

Wing Chug's punch, as you can see in this video, instead of sticking out like an iron rod ,the fist SLAM on the target like an iron ball--in that condition, you can still use first two K to land on the target, but it reduces the impact and once again: it might hurt your wrist(in long term)

  • Thank You!

  • i have to fight this street thug bully 50 lb advantage on me im a see if i can use anything i learned from here, any tips?

  • @TheOmegaMC u sound like a fake pussy. sure youre fighting a 'street thug bully' suprised if ur fihgting anyone at all. just in case you are though dont use this wing chun stuff itll take years to learn. just use your anger kill him as soon as u see him. smash his face with elbows grab his head smack it on your knee headbutt kick his knee rip his balls scratch his eyes bite the mutherfuker if he grabs you. keep it natural. also i aint pretendin to be expert im 16 just experience shit

  • @sunnybash1 tell me, it really must hurt to be that stupid!!

ANYONE can just talk foolish garbage fighting, and that's what your doing, you need to listen to,To understand that it's not your basic fighting,This is a Method of Control,Training your mental responses and your Physical,Understanding how to be fluid

    and drive that power.

your just a shit talking punk A kid, so you'll get at some point IF you open your mind and not your mouth.

  • The bottom 3 knuckles are correct, but this demonstration is incorrect, his left hand isn't as worse than his right, both hands drop, like hitting a lower cored target, and his right hand appears to be doing an open palm strike or Bil Sao on contact. Anyways stance looked right, best of luck in your martial arts endeavours :)

  • Very good explanation of Wing Chun straight punch. Great videos. Thanks.

  • what city are you based out of?

  • lol cyber warriors looking youtube videos and think they get at least some of it by watching. haha

  • Wow, finally some legitimate wing chun vids... This MA is so much fun to watch and to learn, whether it's effective in real life or not. I must show these to a friend of mine, I have a feeling he'll enjoy your vids even more than I do.... ;D

  • ok...ok...ok..ok....ok

  • if your not my bad you look like him you a great teacher

  • are the dude from tokyo drift who drives the black 350z

  • wer do u teach?

  • Thank you so much. I got it.

  • I like the concept of the Wing Chun style (body parts) stick alignment.... but when you said that the third stick must be relaxed, I couldn't fully understand... Which part of the arm does the work? I know that you stated that the body really is the key... I wish to learn more... I'm quite interested in this

  • Interesting Idea to a body punch. 1 thing i would say though is that the biomechanics of this punch are very weak, so obviously this is a deceivingly technical punch because someone trying this for their first time wouldn't be able to push over an apple lol. moving forward leaning back...very unusual punching technique.

  • @anklebreaka03 The point of the Wing Chun Punch though is to deliver the maximum amount of damage in a limited close quarter environment. However, when you include the snap driving motion driven by your core, the whole body of the practitioner is applied to that single area on the chest, persay. This delivers a devastating amount of damage, especially when your opponent's centreline is leaning towards you for a strike. Leaning back allows for chain punches in effect.

  • @guineapig12321 yes but you are using a punch which pretty much is limited to the power that you can generate from elbow extension, no other joints are using in a chain reaction to produce a greater amount force and speed, like your hips, shoulders, etc. Also, when someone is running at you like that attacking your chest...i mean come on...his face is completely open. Might be effective against someone with no training but this wouldn't work against someone like a boxer

  • @anklebreaka03 no!you are wrong@the power of wing chun punches dpnt come from the elbow only!you clearly dint understand anything about the mechanics!the power comes from the ground to the feet, back, shoulder, elbow!also a boxer dont have a chance against a wing chun practioner because only the stance of wing chun makes box useless cause your hands as a boxer are stick in to your chest but the wing chun practioner has his first hand streched forward!the result is that when the boxer try to hit

  • @13Metal13Head13 No sir you are wrong. Like i said before, this is a very weak punch, and yes i do understand exactly what is happening in this video I'm in one of the best kinesiology programs in the world and have taken a biomechanics class which would allow me to understand this punch BIOMECHANICALLY better than you, and like i said its weak. And once again, a WC guy wouldn't stand a fighting chance if hes only going to throw punches with a boxer, how do u walk in with ur face unprotected..

  • @anklebreaka03 well we have different opionions on this sunject and we will never agree!so let me say only this and this conversation is over!i do wc for 1 year now (i know its little time for wc)andi have spar with several boxers, kickboxers etc!they dont had a chance!the think is that you clearly dont know anything about wc!and i will not become 10 year old boy and start to say that i now better than you or i will answer you again because the fact that you think a sport like box can win again

  • @13Metal13Head13 can win against a martial art like wc it makes me clear that i have lost my time so far with you and i will not lost more!cy

  • @13Metal13Head13 Ok you don't have to answer me again but next time try to read the comment properly then u moron. I never said a WC fighter would loose to a boxer, i said if they're both throwing punches ONLY than the WC fighter has no chance watsoever and if u disagree with that than all i can do is laugh at your ignorance, i would say that in a street fight tho a wc fighter would obviously win because of their versatility, but there are more affective forms of self defense than WC

  • @anklebreaka03 Kung Fu > everything else... maybe you can use the guns or the tank for win.. i'm not an expert i just saw this video and i can understand that kung fu is not hit the opponent... like box

from what i heard i'm really ingnorant, but i can understand Wing Chun is nor a regular punch it's something more...

  • @anklebreaka03 he will need much more time to land a puch than the wc practioner!so the wc practioner will just strech his arm he will hit first so the boxer will go backwards and then the boxer will hit the air!i dont know very good eng but i hope you understaned what i mean!

  • Umm 1 quick question what does the smell your wrists part do?

  • MA PERCHE' NON GIOCHI A PALLONE? EHEHE CUCCIOLO

  • hi master, what i want to know is, what part of your hand or nickles is toching his body. one, two, or three nickles? thanks.

  • You are an excellent teacher. I wish I was in your school!

  • Fantastic this is what I have been looking for.

I havent been able to get my head around turning the shoulder off,

30 sec into 1min continuous punching and I am usually done.

    Thanks

  • excellent intelligent teacher

  • i could have spent all my lives mornings putting my mind into this.

    Wish I had known sooner.

    Xie Xie.

  • best explanation ever dude u rock can u do a video about the one inch punch

  • he says "shoulders off", because you shouldnt use your shoulders, its up to the body doin the work here. and just like he says: "practice these little...ehm...details!"XD i love martial arts! its sooo fuckin powerfull and kind of some "controlled massdestruction"! ^^"

did a great job there! respect!

  • i like the bit at 1:07, it reminds me of when bruce lee gets angry in a film an starts to machine gun everyone with his fists lol but i have a question, when you say "shoulders off" does that mean that the shoulder muscle cant be contracted? because if so then i dont understand how you could guide your hand straight forwards, im asking because my shoulders get REALLY tired

  • You're actually not supposed to cock the fist in a boxing punch.

  • Hi Jin, I'm really confused about the sniffing the wrist thing. When you sniff your wrist, I see that you bring it in, but when you set the grenade, does the hand\wrist position change?

  • He is not punching... he is pushing with his hand....

  • I like your videos very much and I respect your knowledge and skill. But I do have one criticsm. You made a comment how in a boxing punch, you bring your hand back to set up the punch. This is not true. We are taught to throw the punch with no telegraphing. Also, you can't always be close enough to apply the more squared up Wing Chun punches. The jab or jkd straight lead as well as the straight rear are invaluable tools that can really help the Wing Chun fighter.

  • you are correct, but when you turn your shoulders or lift your heel or heels off the ground, etc...this is no longer classical wing chun, but a modified wing chun, which is a whole different subject.

  • hi sifu Jin ^_^ i want to ask the difference between modified and classical wing chun....thanks a lot

  • hi sifu Jin ^_^ i want to ask the difference between modified and classical wing chun....thanks a lot

  • @chinaboxer But why is it important how you call it - Classical WC or Modified WC? (Sorry for late comment - it's been a year!). Punch is a punch. May be one day we'll see some art called "Art of punching" - in which you'll do whatever you feel like, without dividing it into WC and Boxing

  • Your vids are so insightful and inspiring. I have a quick question. Which part of the fist do you strike with?

  • the whole fist should make contact but as you extend your punch, you "set off the grenade" which will concentrate the extension of the fist to the bottom three knuckles.

  • Hello +

    I retry.

    Thanks for your teachings.

I d only like to know which are the advantages of impacting with the last 3 knucles and if it isn t way too dangerous for the hand, especially the little finger

    Regards

  • @chinaboxer does this mean you then should bring the fist to face slightly up after the whole fist has made contact. (thanks if you get a chance to reply to my question, and much respect for all your work on youtube)

  • @chinaboxer then why does it look like you are doing a kind of "hammer fist push chop punch"? I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand. It seems kind of like a "hammer palm strike mix". Could you explain maybe in a vid on how exactly the fist lands on the target and contact of the fist?

Thank you and keep up the good work.

  • @chinaboxer Thank you for your video, that was a great demonstration of the power of harmony. A question about punching though. If your hitting with your bottom 3 knuckles your punching with the weakest part of the fist. Aren't you setting your self up for injury?

  • jin your wing chun is great nice to see someone on tou tube who understands WT but more so someone who can teach breakdown and explain the concepts really really well i now understand the WT punch TY

  • thank you for the kind words, peace!

  • @chinaboxer Is it possible to do rapidfire turn punches as if it were a straight blast, or would this compromise form? I've seen someone straight blast in that fashion somewhere on yt where the guy looked like he was shifting the angle of his feet for each turn punch.

  • And then we got to the one-inch punch

  • Ahh... I didn't know there were many so rules on punching... Wing Chun seems like a difficult martial arts to master. Nonetheless,it looks like really cool, and I'd practice it anyday. Great Vid.

Btw, who's the guy on your background? I've seen Bobby Lee dress up like that guy, so I started wondering.

  • that's Pai Mei from kill bill. peace!

  • there are several ways to practice adding your body structure into your punch. one way is to practice on a wooden dummy or a heavy bag. another is punching into wall mounted sand bags, there are also several exercises that you can do such as modified push ups, etc...

  • siu nim tau is one of the best ways to practice developing body structure while standing still. also take a look at my video on "pelvic tilt (basics) part 1,2" which might help answer your question. take care and peace!

  • let us know how it comes along. take care and peace!

  • is it the alignment that keeps the bottom three knuckles from breaking with the wing chun punch? because i know otherwise punching with anything other than the first two knuckles is a no-no.

  • i've gotten a lot of questions about which part of the fist to strike with and whether or not to tighten the fist during impact. i will address this in a future video on "setting the grenade". take care and peace!

  • sorry, i didn't see anything about the wing chun response to a jammed punch. you mentioned in part 1 that the trad street punch can be dissolved if it's jammed, but didn't say how a wing chun punch counteracts the jam.

great vids btw! i see a lotta guys on youtube who seem to miss a lot of wc philosophy because they're more engrossed in the physical movements, but i personally agree w/ every vid you've made.....

    keep up the good work!

  • thanks for your support and kind words. peace!

  • what stops u getting kicked squre in the nuts when u stand like that?

  • lol..good observation. obviously, you don't stand square when you're sparring or fighting. this is a basic training exercise which allows you to practice the punch without having to worry about the footwork.

this allows you to just focus on correctly executing the "punch" mechanics.

  • so how do u get the power from your body behind the punch when u dont stand like that?

  • take a look at the "straight punch" video, "chain punch video", bottom, top, forward triangle videos, "turning off the shoulders video", and then watch this video again.

they explain concepts like the "heavy backpack", heavy elbows, pinning the shoulders, the three sticks, setting the brick wall, developing a powerful spring, etc...

  • my videos builds upon each other. don't just watch a few of them because you'll end up missing alot of information that is necessary for you to understand them.

watch them all and keep going back to them as a reference and often times you'll find that you pick up something new.

  • even something which seems so obvious, like my "how to make a fist" video, which you might disregard, has information that might give you more insight into other subjects such as "how to get power from the body" which is what you want to know.

    take care and peace!

  • thanks, tht did help. so r there any differences between the sticky hands stance and the fighting stance?

  • i'll be making a "footwork basics" video broken into two parts, "distance fighting footwork" and "close in fighting footwork" in the near future.

  • great teaching, don't stop your stuff.

  • thanks!

  • Hi Jin l like your video alot ,it really enlighten me a lot thank you so much , will put it into practice . by the way the WC theory is some kind similar to the taiji cos i learn taiji too from Nam Wah Pai.

  • thanks! even though the "internal martial arts" may look different on the outside, they are all the same on the inside.

  • Just curious to ask you,do you really believe that taiji can really using qi to throw the opponent out without any body contact as you can see many demonstraction on the you tube.

  • no. don't go believing that nonsense. but you should practice the development of qi/chi power, that, i do believe in.

  • CLFDevil, you have not read my comments correctly!!!!!

First of all, I never said WC has more structure. What I said is that WC relies on structure for it's punches (namely bottom, top triangle and alignment of 3 sticks). If you had've reviewed the jin youngs tutorials on bottom, top & forward triangle correctly you would have realised this. Western boxing relies on putting all your mass and driving the punches into the shoulders.I NEVER SAID ONE IS MORE RIGHT THAN THE OTHER READ WHAT I WROTE!

  • western boxing punches can be very powerfull! The flaw is it's only powerfull at the very end of the range of motion. If it's cut short mid range then its not at full force.u c it on tv matches.WC punches maintain full force throughout the entire range of motion so if cut short will still deliver max force.E.G bruce lees 1inch punch.Westernboxing also relies on your bodys mass for power so if you're small youre disadantaged. If youre big you're advantaged.WC relies on STRUCTURE so mass doesntmatter

  • Very good points. I only disagree with where the power comes from. I think power is something your born with. When you look at somone like Tyson, Dempsey, or Rocky these fighters were not big but had amazing knockout power. Tyson was gifted also by his speed. Theres a guy at my gym that I spar with thats 5'7 170. He hits harder than anybody in the gym! He knows how to put all his body behind a punch. My brother whos 6'5 250 is not gifted like my friend. When he hits me when we spar I laugh! lol

  • it is just for me or are all ur videos async.. i mean sound from video

  • I have to admit, THIS STUFF WORKS!

setting the structure of bottom and top triangle and aligning the 3 sticks is clever. I noticed with western boxing it relies a lot on how much muscle you have as opposed to Wing chun it's more to do with your structure. (e.g the door jam). I've tested the bottom triangle against an opponent and to my surprise I was like a brick wall. I can maintain my structure in sparring but in a real life street fattack I'd personally struggle to maintain my structure.

  • great to hear. keep practicing!

  • Interesting! I'm trying to find video online & youtube of a Wing Chun fighter going against a good boxer. Wing Chun just like alot of southern style Kung Fu sytems have great structure. But how would it hold up to a boxer whos coming in and out side to side and punching at the same time? I noticed when Bruce Lee named his fighting style JKD(The base of JKD was always wing chun)he took up a boxing stance and like to move in and out like a boxer. But when you got close he would use Wing Chun.

  • You should probably ask Jin instead, all I can say is, if I were in that situation I'd maintain my structure at all times,re- inforce my brickwall, chase his centre not his hands and protect my centre. If he throws side punches, counteract it with tan sau and a simultaneous centreline punch(with 3 stick alignment for max force).same with the otherside. If he came in and out, my defence (which ever appropriate e.g bong sau)and attack would be simulatenous.Check out youtube videos of Wong Shun Leung.

  • Well I must say you know your wing chun! I was in my gym today hitting the heavy bag with a wing chun punch. I was shocked how little the bag moved! Im a big guy 6'3 235 pounds. I have very wide shoulders 2 so when I hit the bag with a left hook or right cross the guy holding the bag sometimes falls 2 the ground!lol The wing chun punch did not do this. I never took wing chun I come from a Shooto/Muay Thi background, so I'm sure Im not doing it right, but I was still shocked by the lack of power.

  • gah..you're a big dude, you don't need wing chun. who's gonna pick a fight with you?! =P

but yea, the more muscle you have in the upper body, the harder it is to do alot of this stuff, so i understand.

  • well if you watch fight quest wing chun you can see a wing chun fighter against one of the hosts who was a boxer and he mainly uses that..its not much of a fight though : / we don't get to see everything as far as I remember...and is it just me or are the wing chun fighters at the end fight all holding back?

  • Im a purple belt in Jiu-jitsu. Im also trained in Greco Roman, Muay Thai, & boxing. I never felt that arts like Kung fu, Karate, Taekwondo etc was practical. But Wing Chun is very interesting! The thing that I love about jiu-jitsu, Greco, & Muay Thai is that we train to fight all types of attacks. When watching video of wing chun all attacks are coming from a wing chun person. This is not practical in a real fight. Could you show a video of how this art would handle attacks from other styles?

  • Wing Chun principles define efficiency: minimum time, space, and energy. Other styles contain a lot of inefficient movements which can be countered by Wing Chun. This is why when they train, they train against efficiency, not against other styles of inefficiency.

But, that is only for controlled training. It is good to train in uncontrolled environments as well and then you can fight people with other styles then.

  • Wing Chun is the most efficient stand-up striking style, but the effectiveness can only be determined by the individual.

  • Wing Chun has a lot of small details. Many times few inches mean a lot and they train to close that gap up. Everyone has a center and in Wing Chun they train to attack that center. At the same time, they also train to minimize their own center. The center is like a rope and the most skillful they get, the thinner the rope gets.

  • This means, the better they guide, the closer to "nothing" they become, because how can you fight with emptiness? It'll be like trying to push a hologram. It's there, but at the same time, it's empty. They train you to lead their opponents into empty.

  • Okay I get all that. But you dont know how well an art will do unless you put it up against an attack thats practical. Example. In the street you will most likely be attacked by a wild swing. Not a wing chun punch. So I would like to see if he could show a video where one of his students threw a karate punch or a right cross from a boxing stance. You said wing chun is the "most efficient stand up stricking style. If thats the case lets see how it would hanld and attack from a differant style.

  • i understand what your saying. right now, i'm focusing on just basics and structure. later on, i will get into sparring, fighting strategy, and how to use the wing chun structure in an MMA framework. patience grasshoppa! =D

  • Thank you for your reply. Just from watching your videos Im trying to find a wing chun school in California. Like Bruce Lee said I take what is usefull from every art. I love the close quarter striks & blocks from wing chun. I also like the "center line" way of attack & defense. So in the future I hope you could have your student attack you in a boxing stance & a Karate stance. I think it would look like the fight Bruce Lee had in Enter the dragan against Oharra.(Robert Wall)

  • Similar defenses from other arts apply here too. You should check out Samuel Kwok's defenses against similar swings. I think people have demo reels on youtube.

  • Hi Jin, thanks for your tutorials they really are great for beginners like myself. Just a quick question... is your style of Wing Chun slightly different to the one taught by Samuel Kwok? There just seems to be some slight differences in your methods. Thanks in advance.

  • i can't really say, since i've never trained with Samuel Kwok.

  • thanks for the videos. I'm a beginner student and your instructions make things much easier for me to understand.

  • Thank you very much Jin Young! Really appreciate and love your lessons, keep it up!

  • Actually, I have another question:

    3) Would you consider doing a video about palm strikes?

    Thanks!

  • sounds like a plan.

  • Hello. I have two questions:

    1) I'm not sure if I'll be able to express myself correctly, but...What should the movement of the "third stick" feel like during the punch? From the looks of it, I'm guessing it's more of a "snap". Does that make sense?

    2) I've heard people debating how the punch must come forward through the use of the triceps, while others state that the correct way to do it is to use the forearm muscles. Are those opinions correct? What's your take on this?

    Thanks in advance!

  • good questions.

    1. bring your fist up into your armpit, now relax and let gravity drop your fist towards the ground. that's how it should feel when you punch straight out.

    2. relax and focus on your elbow. if you do that along with pinning and shutting the shoulder off, everything else will fall into place.

  • You sir, are awesome.

    Great video.

  • your favorite words are "ok" and "bahh dee"

  • lol. i think you might be right. -_o

  • Having watched all three videos, I can't help but laugh at how simple it is. I've been practicing this kind of stuff on my own trying to figure it out, and because of videos like this, I've made more progress in 3 weeks than I've made in 3 years. It's like being handed the keys to the locks you've been trying to pick for ages. :)

You have a talent for expressing complex concepts in a simple way, and a lot of generosity for sharing this invaluable information with the rest of us. Thank you.

  • i'm glad the video's have helped you and thanks for the wonderful comment. peace!

  • I have another question. You say "turn off the shoulder." Does this mean that you aren't using any shoulder muscle at all, or just minimizing it? Or do you mean that you are not loading the shoulder directly, regardless of a little bit of tension to move the arm into place? Thanks for the help!

  • good question. "turn off the shoulder" means use NO shoulder muscle at all. that's why wing chun is so opposite of the conventional method of getting power.

  • HAHAHA You have a great assistant. He was laughing everytime he flew back from your punch.

Very solid way of dissecting the WC punch. This is the correct way of WC.

  • Jon's a great guy and he makes a great mook jong! =D

  • I'm honored to be your mook jong jin
