I was able to see 7 moves ahead when I was still young, but as I grow older and practice less, I cant even remember 3 moves ahead...same as Karpov, if his memory is still at prime 20s, I bet magnus cant win...
right from the early days, i t was obvious carlsen will be another chess legend. had a feature of a kid but the mind of a centurion... little wonder he is world's #1 today
That's what distinguishes a real chessmaster, after loosing, he is wise and intelligent enough to know that it is better to admire his opponent and be happy that the sport he played so long has everything but reached it's top.
Wow, nice video, but what is the kid's name?? That would've been a useful piece of information.... :/ Was it Magnus something? Monga? What's his full name??
Umm Spassky??? Duh..I'm aware of that and as world champion, he didn't have to play or beat anyone to defend against Fischer. Come on...stop being an asshat.
Great chessplayers are composed of enormous talent for the game, training, consistency, proper direction, focus, AND EXTREME HUNGER TO BE THE BEST & TO STRIVE FOR SOME GOAL, WHICH MAKES THEM TO FIGHT THE HARDEST.
After 20 years, Karpov lost his passion and hunger. Kasparov was HUNGRY and took the championship. When Kasparov lost his hunger, he lost to Anand. Competitive chess isn't for the half hearted at any level.
after everyones had the chance to study him it's not really a shocker. Happens to all the greats of anything. After everyone studies them, them somebody else comes along. Its like comparing a basketball star of today against old legends like Dr J, or Micheal Jordan. These guys were awesome before the And 1 tapes, and the internet. Now everyone can study any
great person with the sole purpose of surpassing them. Kid could be the next world champ for a while.
Can't remeber where, but Carlsen himself once claimed it is disabilitating to be "too" smart, as you can then generate too much noise to be able to focus at the highest level.
This is indeed impressive for Carlsen at age 13 to beat Karpov. It would be more impressive, however, if Carlsen won with the black pieces. I would like to have seen them play a series of games instead of just one.
@vikramaLP So having a far more developed brain isn't an advantage at all? That's basically like saying that chess has nothing to do with the brain. It has everything to do with the brain. Carlsen beating Karpov as a 13-year old is extremely impressive.
@sh0werp0wer Nobody is talking about brain here...its the right strategy, learning from mistakes fast improvising is what you need. Carlsen can focus at this age of 13 is very good and not being distracted...there are kids at 5 yrs who play achieved1600 rating. Talking about brain a " Savant" is retarded but can remember all strategy in the book and apply it, why coz his brain captured all the strategy and responses...not because he learned it from experaince but by memory power of Savant.
@Epeolatry1 each person has a timer on the right in which they must click to stop there time after there move, spending to long on a move is not a good thing as it can cost the game.
@Epeolatry1 Well kind of yeh, it's more like each player has a time let's say 10 minutes, so each player tends to move quickly in order for their time to not decrease and lose the game.
What is the Commentator talking about at 0:37 ??? Karpov never beat Kasparov in a rematch 1991, there was no such match - the last wc-match was in 1990 New York/Lyon, which Kasparov won with 12,5-11,5. After that match Kasparov (and Short) 'left' the Fide-Cycle. (As far as i remember only in the 1984/85, their first match, Karpov lead with 5-3 before the match was ended without winner. And 1987 in Sevilla it was a 12-12.)
notice the wave of young chess players today, that beat grandmasters or just competing at a masters level....THE UNIVERSE IS TALKING TO US! THESE CHILDREN ARE COMING TO EARTH WELL EQUIPED! ITS A WONDERFUL FEELING TO SEE THAT.
Even though chess is a game of breaking the opponets Ego, its obvious Karpov's intelligence goes well beyond the chess board. He would never go as low as showing ignorance after a kid bit him.
@Commonsense11111 From what I understand, Fischer was way to picky over rules/regs/agreements by this time. Karpov was in his prime and many believed he would of beaten Fischer had they actually played.
@pineapplepeanuts then you really dont understand anything at all. does your mother still brush your teeth?
spassky was the best in the ussr. karpov could not lick his tp. spassky could have won by default when fischer refused to come out for game 3. spassky allowed the room change, and ultimately lost. to punish spassky, the russians made karpov 1st board. karpov sucked, kasperov spanked him for years afterwards. korchnoi was a joke as well.
@Commonsense11111 Hmmm I guess I read wrong on that bit. It doesn't diminish my respect for Karpov though. And no my mother doesn't "brush my teeth," its just that I have a life to attend to that involves learning more relevant things. You should try it sometime, because if you are nerding out over chess history on Youtube, you're the one who's probably still living in your mother's basement.
@Commonsense11111 Not worth the time? When you have other responsibilities to worry about, you have to determine what is and isn't worth your time. Its called being a mature adult, which I'm compromising by arguing with some anonymous troll on Youtube who measures his dick according to his FIDE rating. The worst part: You couldn't even hold Karpov's dirty jockstrap, so you're in no position to criticize anyway.
@pineapplepeanuts oh, i get it. The five posts that you put on here were worth the time, (especially the ones trying to prove me wrong) but when you are proven wrong, then all of a sudden posting is not worth the time! I home you are not a lawyer, but with that great intellect of yours, you could really play good chess in a nursery school
@30inventionman I mean these competitions are in series so someone of Karpov's caliber and experience would be extremely unlikely to underestimate their opponents after the first game.
Young minds are going to change chess and it doesn´t matter how strong computers are; human young kids who are developing their skills will be harder to beat than computers. So it is not hard to believe this situation.
How about referring to him by name in the description? Especially considering you posted this at a time when he was already perhaps the most famous chess player that is active today.
I think the two main things to take from this is- 1: The young man is gathering momentum very similar to most great champions were like at his age. 2: The attitude of Karpov was stellar, complementary, impressed and classy - not what you expect after bad press.
On the other hand Kasparov was arrogant walking off after a draw with a little 13 year old and he was rude and disrespectful - not what you expect from one with such great press?
"This kid has now achieved becoming #1 in the world. Could we be looking at a future World Champion?" Umm... you seem to have a problem with your definitions. Or perhaps I do?
@antismatic There's being ranked #1 by Elo points and then there's being the World Champion by winning the World Chess Championship title. Two seperate things.
@antismatic Yep, two very different things. Being ranked number 1 isn't enough, they have to prove themselves in a match against the world champion, and that's no easy task. Matches are really exhausting for chess players. I know that other guy just told you, but I thought I'd add to his explanation.
I always been Karpov fan,i thinke Magnus"s style is pretty much the same.Wish him to win world title. He is ready for that.As for Anatoly Karpov he steel had 2700 at the age of 59 being among the top 15,and in top 30 in the age of 55.The purets talent in chess history
You also have to remember something. Just like physical combat, mental combat can be extremely taxing. To the child its a GAME and its FUN, you do allot better at something when you are having fun. Karpov is one of the guys that got me into chess in the 80s. I took 2nd place at my school yearly torunament that year when you get older though you lose a bit of the edge.Karpov is by no means a push over and would smoke me but when he was younger he was a beast.
Rofl it's almost laughable how nice Karpov is about all of this. In my scholastic playing days I would be pretty ticked off if I lost to someone a lot younger than me in a tournament or if they were much lower rated than me. I can't FATHOM how a world champion could take a loss so well.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Sportsmanship, maybe? Sure it's a loss, but the guy was legitimately beaten. Why should it matter the characteristics of the winner?
ok pat yourselfs as a family on the back-----then move on to important things. you only care. it's a board game and you are posting like a cure has been found. enough
Fucking Carlsen. He is a rare combination of strong skill and strong will. He is also very strong mentally; he doesn't go down on himself when loosing nor he throws tantrums.
I TAKE OFFENCE TO THIS VIDEO. KASPAROV DIDN'T "STEAL" THE CHESS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. TRUE, HE WAS 5-0 DOWN, BUT THEN SHOWED US WHAT A TRUE CHAMPION HE IS BY COMING BACK 5-3 AND WON THE REMATCH A YEAR LATER IN MOSCOW WHERE HE WON THE VERY FIRST GAME AND WENT ON TO WIN A GREAT MATCH THAT NOT ONLY AMAZED THE CHESS WORLD BUT ALSO STUNNED US ALL WITH HIS GENUIS. THE TERM "STOLE" KARPOV'S CROWN NOT ONLY INSULTS KASPAROV, BUT INSULTS HIS MANY MILLIONS OF HIS FANS AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDING ME.
well think of this. Would he be able to beat Karpov at his best shape? Not when he's old and not trained as good as before? But yet, this is still very impressive.
@Yodovannn He has reached a higher FIDE-Elo rating than Karpov ever did, so my answer would have to be yes. Only Kasparov has reached a higher rating than this kid.
wow...I know this is not terribly constructive, and he certainly doesn't deserve such a remark..but does anyone else look at Karpov and think: now there's someone with an old, deep voice?
I was able to see 7 moves ahead when I was still young, but as I grow older and practice less, I cant even remember 3 moves ahead...same as Karpov, if his memory is still at prime 20s, I bet magnus cant win...

@au5tin222 Are you saying that it's the same psychologically whether you get beat by a world champion or whether you get beat by a 5 year old?

Fucking Carlsen. He is a rare combination of strong skill and strong will. He is also very strong mentally; he doesn't go down on himself when loosing nor he throws tantrums.

Not the main point of the video at all but you gotta love and respect Karpov. What a gentleman.
forth1sgift 5 months ago

WTF ! ! ! ! ! well, we'll c if he's gonna be the true master or it was just luck.
aOmmyLuv 5 months ago
@aOmmyLuv He has been ranked number 1 in the world for more or less a year and a half and holds a number of records, so id say it wasnt just luck.
bananosbjarne 5 months ago
@bananosbjarne well, i only know a few things about chess society. so i don't know who he is and how he is now. lol.
aOmmyLuv 5 months ago
what Karpov was going to say is F**K! HOW THE F**K DID A F*****G 13 YEAR OLD DEFEAT A F*****G FORMER WORLD F*****G CHAMP?!
Deathriken 5 months ago
poor old Karpov! spare a thought to the old-timer...
YtubeUserr 6 months ago
well think of this. Would he be able to beat Karpov at his best shape? Not when he's old and not trained as good as before? But yet, this is still very impressive.
Yodovannn 6 months ago
@Yodovannn He has reached a higher FIDE-Elo rating than Karpov ever did, so my answer would have to be yes. Only Kasparov has reached a higher rating than this kid.
bananosbjarne 5 months ago
wow...I know this is not terribly constructive, and he certainly doesn't deserve such a remark..but does anyone else look at Karpov and think: now there's someone with an old, deep voice?
