Not sure where you guys are but people seem much more friendly there. Where I am (New England) I have not been able to convince anyone to let me dig. Though one guy said I could if I posted a $40,000 bond and got insurance and then paid him a fee equal to the apraised value of whatever I dug up plus pay for the apraisal. I have asked more than 30 people so far. One guy threatened to have me arested and all I did was politely ask.
