if you like syd's music, please check out my music! Search for Roger Delarge on facebook or youtube! Syd is my favorite artist and a huge inspiration for me! thanks ;)
Dylan, Lennon , Barrett, McCartney, Townsend, Ray Davis, Hendrix’s, Mercury, Bowie, bee gees, ect ect ect way to many to name there a shit load of great songwriters but in my opinion Dylan, Lennon are the best…….
@SpikeyBoy25 i would have to agree, but when gilmour was around they were more into meaningful lyrics, however with syd (at least very early on) you hear him say in an interview it's just dance along music.
Floyd was great with and without barrett. Even after he left he forever left an influence on the band, a lot of their songs are about him. After gates of dawn he was to crazy to live a normal life
@gcdc14 I think Syd is overrated, absolutely overrated, and I don't understand people like you who put down the "post Barrett" Floyd as something they should have to apologize for. IMHO that's sentimental rubbish, but to each their own. Let's just say I beg to differ, stridently. Having said that, let's all enjoy the fact that we have all this music to choose from. Thank you, musicians everywhere!
@videotater I agree with you. I like listening to the old Syd floyd, especially songs like this one and Astronomy Domine, but the floyd of the 1970's are a much better and more musical band. I think one reason for this is that they were really just kids when this first album came out. It took a little while for them to build up their chops and develop the polished "Dark Side" and "Animals" sound that they are known for. Syd Barrett floyd is great for what it is, but it's not their best work.
@dirtynuke i am..this music is unbelievable...the were young cats having fun..isnt that what the whole reason of playing music is to have fun and feel it?..this music the the glue of the generation
When this song was recorded, at the very end Syd started playing with the sound,in the studio He experimented by moving the sound on the board from left to right giving it a spacey sound.and it worked. One of the first great headphone sounds.
interstellar od (syd) and 3rd stone from the sun (hendrix) were the 2 scientific space explorations when the acid-waves took over the amps - hail atlantis!
This song, like most songs on "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", have a combination of psychedelic and progressive elements. Pink Floyd became fully 'progressive' when they recorded their 'Meddle' album. Great song!
Oh I forgot to mention I've never done lsd... but I did do shrooms and this song was just as good... last time I heard which was like.... 8 years ago Oh yeah... It's also about getting high in your room in the 60's and staring at the lava lamp... which was brand new back then... all night. And being like... whoa....
@Vesters1 What Lennon... not a poet! You're crazy! The psycadelic gems, A Day In The Life, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Strawberry Fields Forever, the rawness of the Primal Scream album, and how Imagine is about the most punk in your face fuck you type of lyrics sung about religion and anarchy in a pop song with a piano (which really is the beauty of the song in my opinion).
@Vesters1 Well if Lou Reed,John Lennon, and Bowie are shit, name five bands or solo artists that you think are good and everyone will judge you're decision.
@STRATCAT101 Well i said that he "forgot" Lou Reed as one of the best writers next to Barrett, Dylan and Bowie. The only thing I said is that Lennon is not a good lyrics writer and that his main force is his compositions. If you're asking about other great lyricists I would say Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.
As much as I like Syd Barrett, that's a little ridiculous. I'd put Waters, Townshend, McCartney, Fogerty (extremely underrated) up there above him, and I'm sure there are others. He is great, though.
@Gridz21 in my opinion i shld of put i think dylan, barrett, lennon best songwrites....but i agree there is a load more probably better then syd, i jst like his style and all them who u said 2
@stevexiii Yes, Waters was much better at producing lyrics and songs suitable for the radio and that's about it. The band was much more progressive, expressive, innovative, and connotative with Syd running the show. And the only good post Barrett album produced, Dark Side of the Moon, seems to borrow much from Syd himself.
@gcdc14 In my opinion, almost everything about your comment is complete rubbish. And it's not that I disagree with your opinion (though I do), it's the complete narcissism and misinterpretation that makes it rubbish. When Syd left, Pink Floyd made songs that were 18 minutes plus, used all manner of innovative studio and playing techniques, expanded their sound ever more, and had remarkably deep and relevant lyrics. How is that not progressive, expressive, innovative, and connotative?
@bubmaterial You don't have to be on acid to be a good writer. Besides; look at what happened to Barrett after using so many drugs for such a long time.
the most incredible band that has ever been. Syd was the most brilliant, original writer that music has ever seen. They are amazing. There aren't really any words that could show that amazingness well. Floyd are the base of most great music, music would not be what it is without them. The shit they play on the radio nowadays isn't music, THIS is music.
And come on, you can't get much sexier than Syd can you?? x
@whorlicks actually, it's finally soundimng Wright, as it should sound, for now time is catching up to us, and we are catching up to time, a loosened string.
Nothing like being fried on acid and listening to this song between a pair of large speakers. It's mind-blowing when they start moving the music around in stereo toward the end.
Syd Baret was so awesome, I love the part near the end when the first riff is alternating from left to right, and etc... so awesome, but I bet the mono version is better!
@robslater90 Well, me to, being born in 1995, but (I cant explain it, its like when you listen to Sgt. Peppers (the beatles) in stereo, it's pretty awesome, but when you listen to it in mono, it kicks stereo's ass) LOL!
Pink Floyd designed, named and scripted the genetical codes of every living organism that has ever existed on this planet. In other words, Pink Floyd are Gods.
furcolow, u crazzzzzy, so do u think the wall is a mediocre album. please if u say so u don't know much about music, i really hate another fuckin' brick in the wall and maybe another song but, the rest of the allbum is just amazin' and animals is not great but it has sheep which save the whole album, anyway 4 me the best so far is DARK SIDE OF THE MOON!!!!!!! by the way i hate money.

A true, timeless classic. I get flashbacks listening to it. IO will be forever woven into my consciousness, ocassionally bumping up against Saucer Full of Secrets!
Damn, Syd was a genius... I mean Roger Waters and David Gilmour made brilliant, brilliant stuff after Syd's departure, but it would have been awesome to have Syd in the mix with Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals etc.
@krollaostmedburger He did make two solo albums. Then one day he walked back home to his Mom's house in Cambridge (all the way from London) and he stayed there for the rest of his life. He gardened, cared for his cats, did do-it-yourself projects around the house and painted pictures. He preferred to avoid all human contact other than his Mom and his sister. He died form pancreatic cancer in July of 2006.
He had lots of money coming in from royalties for his musical work, and I'm sure too that his family made sure that he had what he neede financially and otherwise, His sister said that whenever anyone mentioned Pink Floyd to him he got very upset and agitated and would be depressed for weeks after that. Very sad. He had so much to deal with emotionally and mentally!

Damn, Syd was a genius... I mean Roger Waters and David Gilmour made brilliant, brilliant stuff after Syd's departure, but it would have been awesome to have Syd in the mix with Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals etc.

How right you are. What a shame for a musical mind like his to just go completely nuts. What a shame and waste,,,,,,

what did happen to syd after he turned crazy? Did he stay at home his whole did? Anyone knows what he really did?
krollaostmedburger 1 year ago
@krollaostmedburger He did make two solo albums. Then one day he walked back home to his Mom's house in Cambridge (all the way from London) and he stayed there for the rest of his life. He gardened, cared for his cats, did do-it-yourself projects around the house and painted pictures. He preferred to avoid all human contact other than his Mom and his sister. He died form pancreatic cancer in July of 2006.

Thank you that exactly what I thougth. But how did he earn money and stuffs?
krollaostmedburger 1 year ago
He had lots of money coming in from royalties for his musical work, and I'm sure too that his family made sure that he had what he neede financially and otherwise, His sister said that whenever anyone mentioned Pink Floyd to him he got very upset and agitated and would be depressed for weeks after that. Very sad. He had so much to deal with emotionally and mentally!
