Can anyone tell me, because I have been wondering for a while now, what the advantages are to having the symphony set up in this manner? I know it is quite common, but is it just a certain style, or are there acoustic benefits to seating the symphony that way?
@ensignlilyjavert That is called extension. It makes the lowest note of the bass even lower because the string is longer. It allows the other bassists to play lower notes than the principal can play.
me llama la atencion la parte de timbales...no se si sera alguna modificacion del director o una edicion diferente a la q emite por l gral la "Kalmus"
Even tho the harp is not one of my favorite musical instruments, in this piece by Tchaikosvky the remainder of the London Symphony Orchestra tends to drown it with a sea of sounds, had the harp been a little bit stronger without going too overboards, it would had been more enjoyable.
@BluTaiwan too bad violists almost never have solos in music! (you are correct in that they should acknowledge them for the once in a blue moon when they do get a solo)
Boy, this Gergiev is quite a character, but a genius no doubt. Anyhow, it's a wonder to me how orchestral musicians are able to follow his conducting.....
@aimeeelulu What are you talking about? I don't care how he blows his clarinet. He's in the feaken London Symphony Orchestra!!!! Have you any idea how hard it is to get in there? He doesn't need to get anywhere, he's there already, period.
@DarkBEats789 Then you stick out from the crowd. It's a great gift to be able to appreciate this. Thank you for actually recognizing this, rather than blowing it off as "crappy old people music".
This is a very intense piece that I think captures the story of Romeo and Juliet. It shows the tenderness of the the love yet has the intense fighting of the montagues and Capulets. I Believe that this version is a better representation then the prokofiev. But, what other people say, both are two different composers of different styles, time periods. I do believe that both had a good interpretation of the tragic love story but Tchaikovsky seemed to capture it with a edge.but it's just a opinion.
@JJBRMusic FEEL the impending DOOM as the piece starts, and conflict at 4:35. The parts cut into each other almost randomly. The piece is meant to be played as if it was being composed as it went along. Tchaikovsky basically composed this piece in this manner. ONE AND DONE; and one word to describe this: BEAST.
Beautiful. I feel like I know this from my childhood, like I have listened to it very often - it seems so familiar. And it reminds me of falling asleep as a child... But I can't remember.
Unlike the great conductors of the past, Walter, Klemperer, Guilini, Karajan etc I find Gergiev very inconsistent. This is excellent, his performance of the 4th symphony (you tube) with the VPO is appalling - much too fast, reducing the music to banality. I am finding this all the time with his recordings, some good some terrible, maybe he just doing too much.
@BluTaiwan GAH I KNOW RIGHT!!!! I am a violist and I was so horrified to see them showing the Cor and not the Violas!! It's the only time the violas get the limelight!!
The orchestra I play in are preparing to perform this song. It is sooooo intricate and elaborate. To get it to sound this good takes a lot of time and talent.
The yearning love of Romeo and Juliet, beautifully crafted by Tchaikovsky @ 8:01 and it repeats @ 9:09...The prologue is well described in the start (written in F-sharp minor with the foreboding of doom from the lower strings).
Just have to recomend the Russian National Orchestras version, it's simply amazing. LSO played it well but Tchaikovsky is best when played by a Russian or slavonic orchestra. It's the dynamics, articulation and the special temper they are born with that makes it so fantastic.
a fine batch of musicians, but i thought the fast parts were too fast- and the slow parts were too slow. i admit the conductor reminds me of joe cocker at woodstock.
This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. It expresses his pure genius and is a grand compilation of dissonance and angelic harmony. If there is a heaven, I'm sure he's up there writing the music.
Lousey Orchestra lousey conducting. English orchestras cannot play this music with any fervour at all. The climax is plain embarrassing with undernourished strings and coarse brass. .Abysmal
@philopus94 I diagree! I think it's magnificent! Would't call it plain or abysmal at all! Keep these type of opinions to yourself! It's hugely inconsiderate!!
@philopus94 I disagree! I think it's magnificent! Would't call it plain or abysmal at all! Keep these type of opinions to yourself! It's hugely inconsiderate!!

@silvercrrab Thank you very, very..much :) and it's fishing village not fighing, i was taken by the moment, i was jet lagged...i was dyslexing for a split second, i'd had no sleep for nights on end, my wife left me...ok..so the truth is im as thick as a castle wall...
