The captain called the latter to the bridge to witness the passing, and reportedly the maître d'hôtel cautioned, "Careful, we are extremely close to shore." The maître d'hôtel's sister had posted a Facebook message in Italian saying: "Soon the Concordia ship will pass very close. A big greeting to my brother who finally gets to have a holiday on landing in Savona". The maître d'hôtel's father recalled, "Antonello called me earlier to say the ship would be passing the island at around 21.30 "

@marineyacht criminal ? are you fucking serious ?! .. it's not like he did it on purpose. Don't judge. -.- It was an accident. Yes, an accident that risked many lives, but people make mistakes.
@vevi69@vevi69 hey hey watch your words! Maneuver a vessel with 4,000 people, that close to the island is not a accident, leave your tripulation and 4,000 people on your hands are not a accident,
@vevi69 you are responsible for those thousand of people. Like you say people make mistake, but this my friend is a negligence. For me as captain with principles and values and a good person, believed he is a criminal, and i bet for millions and millions of people around the word and the family's who has lost in this accident like you say. Continue to watch the case on court and see if he is a criminal or not, and pray to god for the victims.
@vevi69 When you operate a Vessel you are responsible for people are in the vessel ,your not leaving behind you as a captain are the last that's why coast guard arrest him and so many charge that he have. Don't take it personal it was just my comment, if is don't watch YouTube to strong for you. have a good year and a wonderful life, God bless you.
@vevi69 { if the court and federal maritime law determine that he is not a criminal i personally erase my comment and i apologize to you here on public if your feel offended}
@vevi69 If you're piloting a plane with thousands of passengers and you suddenly decide to lower in altitude to greet your sister who is waving at you from a skyscraper and you crash the plane, would it be an accident? Of course I'm exaggerating a bit, but it's almost the same thing. He was supposed to follow the instructions and not fucking drive this big ass boat to the shore. Because of his stupidity, people died, it doesn't matter if it was intentional or not! Law isn't about that...
This ship is not middle class. It's top of the line I've been on two costa ships and they are fantastic. It was all captains error. He approached from the wrong spot for anchoring and hit a rock patch and of course this is what happened. Very bad captain error of course considering they do these trips every single week so it's normal. But hey that's what happens when you try and get dumb with a cruise ship lol. R.I.P. To those who died
@CandiiDuckii My personal opinion is that the Captain wanted to show off to the individuals in the ship. Sound the horn, and look like a commercial. Make him look "good" of course he miscalculated the distance. And apparently forgot where he was.
@talltom1973 They will try before they commission a new ship. That being said, as somewhat of an old insider. I do not believe it would be great for propaganda. "Hey look that used to be the Concordia, people died there. Let's not go into it, ewwww!" That's what they will say.
@undomiel152003 It reminded me of Titanic because the Titanic accident was symbolic. This gigantic ship that seemed unsinkable... sinked. and a positive period for science (such as the belle epoque) degenerated into WW 1. I was wondering if Concordia was also symbolic (who knows) maybe for the Italy... sorry for my bad english
This company is MAFIA, they don´t care at all about the security of the passengers or the crew.
I invite to everybody to investigate Costa, they just care about the money. Many crew member stop working in Costa because their condictions are terrible! That´s why this things happens.
@Immaculite man ship measures 300 m lenght 70 m tall. 4000 people aboard : there were kids olders people with discapacity floors that become walls and any object flying around darkness and yes people that doesnt know how to swim does exist... but i guess i m losing my time with u , your brain doesnt have windows.
@Immaculite You do realize not everyone swims right? I live in a coastal city, in fact one of the port cities for one of the lines from Carnival Corp, worked in a headquarter, and sailed countless times (good old days, with free cruises), and I never swam. Still can't swim to be honest. Swimming as a puppy for two minutes before getting tired is not swimming.
People, the death toll isn't even close to the Titanics. Do you realize that in almost every ship there is a death? Crew members that die from natural causes, guests too, foul play, over intoxication. It's not uncommon. Think about it this way, the logistics and mathematical equations are that in a ship with approximately 5,000 individual each week, there are bound to be casualties. And I also have old internal information on that. What makes it to the news are the shocking news.
@mariosmashfann Probably because 5 people have been confirmed dead instead of over 1300 and the ship is not lost per say. It could be refloated and refurbished. That's probably what they're going to do anyway. It would be cheaper than building a new ship.
I wonder what they'll do with the ship? They can't just leave it there half submerged. I would be cheaper to seal the hole, refloat and refurbish the ship than it would be to build a new one.
@clintonearlwalker That is yet to be known. If they seal the big hole and the pumps work faster than the amount of water coming in it should be fine, plus they would attach large inflatable bladders to the sides of the ship to raise it anyway. Then the holes wouldn't matter. Fixing this ship would be cheaper than building a new one.
@hop208 Do you know how big that ship is an how much water would have to be pumped? Are there pumps that large and fast that can remove that much water faster than it can get back in? Could the hull of the ship withstand the stress of the bladders without breaking apart? I don't expect that ship will ever be re-floated, it would be very expensive and risky.
@clintonearlwalker They can't just leave the ship there and even if they were to scrap it, it couldn't be broken up where it is. I would cause too much environmental damage. The bladders might be risky, but still less expensive than building a new ship.
@hop208 They certainly can leave it right where it sits. There are broken and abandoned ships sitting on reefs all over the world and have been for hundreds of years. I read a salvage company is already on the way to try to remove fuel oil which hasn't spilled yet. I doubt if YOU have enough money to risk bladders re-floating this ship, and I'll be surprised in anyone else risks their money either.
@clintonearlwalker ME? I was unaware I would be paying for this... It has been done before, the amount of damage to the ship is unknown apart from the large gash which is exposed. They aren't scrapping anything yet as they are still searching the ship for people. The ship was built only a few years ago, who knows what their insurance company is going to say since the captain was negligent.
@hop208 The insurance company might decide to not pay for the damage, at which point the company can litigate against them (and corporations tend to be good with that with their line of attorneys). But the lost of revenue is substantial. They have to fix this, deal with the ship costs, the actual loss of revenue from the rebooking and cancellations that this ship would have had this year, and a half. It's a huge loss. They (Carn) used to self insure against this, I don't know how it is now.
@hop208 "The rescue operation was called off mid-afternoon Monday after the Costa Concordia shifted a few inches (centimeters) in rough seas. The fear is that if the ship shifts significantly, some 500,000 gallons of fuel may begin to leak into the pristine waters around the island of Giglio.
"This route was put in correctly. The fact that it left from this course is due solely to a maneuver by the commander that was unapproved, unauthorized and unknown to Costa," he said.-Comcast News
@clintonearlwalker Fool right? You seem to not recall that a ship full of diesel is an enviromental disaster that would create much worse problems than what they have done now. They will try to salvage the ship, the very least to get it out of the water even if they have to basically junk it due to all the mold from the water.
@undomiel152003 There are 500,000 gallons of fuel on the ship right now and they are trying to remove it, although the ship shifted slightly Monday and rescue operations were halted. They may try to cut the ship apart where it sits for scrap and to remove the eyesore, but I doubt seriously if if ever floats again.
@clintonearlwalker, They will try to move it. And they will succeed. Their initial plan is to move it to a dry dock and fix it. My personal opinion on the matter, coming from someone that used to work in one of the divisions, they will be able to take it out of the sea. That being said, I doubt they can fix it and book the cruise because of the stigma. Then again, I have previously stated, that there are quite a number of deaths in ships that you don't ever know about. Naturally causes mostly.
@clintonearlwalker It can be upright again. Now would it be more financially beneficial to fix it or commission a new one? That they do have to see and analyze. That it should not and can not be in that part of the shore is beyond a considerable doubt true. That it should be retired just like older ships are should be done. Again, my opinion is that people will not book into it, thus the loss of revenue is substantial if they fix it. Even renaming would not do.
She was a fine ship. I only wish people could be a little more understanding and less judgmental. Unless you were there, you don't really know what it was like, or anything of the ciaos and panic that ensued. The Captain did a great job of maneuvering the ship to shallow water after she was crippled, and should be hailed as hero for saving thousands of lives. I only hope good lessons are learned in what is needed to prevent this from ever happening again. We have the technology to be better.
IT FIRST RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH CREWMEMBER TO MAKE SURE TO SAFE ALL PASSENGERS IN DANGEROUS SITUATION!!! Before you leave the boat!!! THAT EXAMPLE SHOULD BE A WARNING TO ALL ship-owners, i will never will go cruising which company which has FILIPINOS CREW and i think so many people will be same opinion after what happened I WILL ALWAYS FEEL IN DANGER IF I KNOW WHAT ON BOARD WORKING FILIPINOS CREW !!!!
I sincerely hope that all ship-owners will turn them attention! From so many nationalities of crew only FILIPINOS! the first who ran to lifeboats which have been intended for passengers and pushed out from there WOMEN! REPRESENTATIVES of THIS NATION ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for PASSENGERS which cruising with any CRUISE LINERS. NOTICE! NOT THAI CREW NOT HINDUS NOT INDONESIAN CREW or other nationality - only FILIPINOS! HAVE PROVED them self AS SELFISH population...

@jaarekparf I'm sure someone on board recorded it. Give it some more time. Many are still trying to get home or are being interviewed by authorities. Its also possible that videos were confiscated as material evidence. I was in a ship wreak once, and was forced to turn over my film by the Captain, who saw me from the wheelhouse shooting film from the bow. I had no choice because I was crew.
@r1casill Not now, time will tell. He's in jail. I think he was a hero. He saved thousands of lives by maneuvering the crippled ship to shallow water. He claims the rock they hit was uncharted. If this is true, he's not to blame at all. However, the ship builders could be liable because we have technology to prevent such things from happening. I'm sure we will know more during the trial.
@skittletube He didnt Move the ship into Shallow water.. WTF, he was going out of the Harbour, couple hundred meters out of the Harbour the captain did not move the ship from the Island, infact reports are it was apublicity stunt from Costa or the Captain, Waving to ppl on the Island while going past. - Futhermore, this vessel was the largest Ship built IN Italy @ 114,500 Tons 290M long and 35M Wide..It was a failsafe vessel just as ANY modern day Cruisliner. It cost 450Mil !!!
@HowToEatWaffel ok then when you turn about 80 or so, go on a cruise ship and if the same thing happens to you, try and get out of the over turned ship AND swim to shore... kind of hard to do
@archielily1 Your right, people don't think about that. Can you imagine trying to walk on bulkheads at a 30 degree angle while trying to avoid debris and other frantic people in the dark. It must of been a real nightmare. I'm sure we will hear more stories about this after things settle down and people get home. Excellent observation. Great comment!!
@TheFordsforme This is a very rare event. With technology we have today, this should not happen. Don't let it scare you off. I guarantee this will make the industry much more safe in the future. I think the ship builder is more at fault here than the Captain who saved thousands of lives by maneuvering the crippled ship to shallow water.
@karlofduty21 The Captain said it was an uncharted rock. I hope he's right, or he's going to the house of doors for a long..... long......long....long time.
they said the ship went way off coarse, which was done on purpose by the captain. Apparently, they were doing a "pass" for ppl to view the island...but no way U compare this to Titanic, those ppl never had a prayer...in the above ship wreck, no one should had died,NO ONEEEE.

They will try to salvage the ship, the very least to get it out of the water even if they have to basically junk it due to all the mold from the water.
undomiel152003 1 month ago
@undomiel152003 There are 500,000 gallons of fuel on the ship right now and they are trying to remove it, although the ship shifted slightly Monday and rescue operations were halted. They may try to cut the ship apart where it sits for scrap and to remove the eyesore, but I doubt seriously if if ever floats again.
clintonearlwalker 1 month ago
@clintonearlwalker, They will try to move it. And they will succeed. Their initial plan is to move it to a dry dock and fix it. My personal opinion on the matter, coming from someone that used to work in one of the divisions, they will be able to take it out of the sea. That being said, I doubt they can fix it and book the cruise because of the stigma. Then again, I have previously stated, that there are quite a number of deaths in ships that you don't ever know about. Naturally causes mostly.
undomiel152003 1 month ago
@undomiel152003 I'll believe it when I see it. I seriously doubt that ship will ever be upright again.
clintonearlwalker 1 month ago
@clintonearlwalker It can be upright again. Now would it be more financially beneficial to fix it or commission a new one? That they do have to see and analyze. That it should not and can not be in that part of the shore is beyond a considerable doubt true. That it should be retired just like older ships are should be done. Again, my opinion is that people will not book into it, thus the loss of revenue is substantial if they fix it. Even renaming would not do.
undomiel152003 1 month ago
its scary to think that people died from this accident so close to shore, imagine and accident out further into the seas.

@jaarekparf they were propably trying to save their lifes rather than take videos you know...
gwgwkal 1 month ago
@jaarekparf I'm sure someone on board recorded it. Give it some more time. Many are still trying to get home or are being interviewed by authorities. Its also possible that videos were confiscated as material evidence. I was in a ship wreak once, and was forced to turn over my film by the Captain, who saw me from the wheelhouse shooting film from the bow. I had no choice because I was crew.

ahhhhhh does the captain still have a job?
r1casill 1 month ago
@r1casill Not now, time will tell. He's in jail. I think he was a hero. He saved thousands of lives by maneuvering the crippled ship to shallow water. He claims the rock they hit was uncharted. If this is true, he's not to blame at all. However, the ship builders could be liable because we have technology to prevent such things from happening. I'm sure we will know more during the trial.
skittletube 1 month ago
@skittletube He didnt Move the ship into Shallow water.. WTF, he was going out of the Harbour, couple hundred meters out of the Harbour the captain did not move the ship from the Island, infact reports are it was apublicity stunt from Costa or the Captain, Waving to ppl on the Island while going past. - Futhermore, this vessel was the largest Ship built IN Italy @ 114,500 Tons 290M long and 35M Wide..It was a failsafe vessel just as ANY modern day Cruisliner. It cost 450Mil !!!

@HowToEatWaffel ok then when you turn about 80 or so, go on a cruise ship and if the same thing happens to you, try and get out of the over turned ship AND swim to shore... kind of hard to do
archielily1 1 month ago
@archielily1 Your right, people don't think about that. Can you imagine trying to walk on bulkheads at a 30 degree angle while trying to avoid debris and other frantic people in the dark. It must of been a real nightmare. I'm sure we will hear more stories about this after things settle down and people get home. Excellent observation. Great comment!!

TheFordsforme 1 month ago
@TheFordsforme This is a very rare event. With technology we have today, this should not happen. Don't let it scare you off. I guarantee this will make the industry much more safe in the future. I think the ship builder is more at fault here than the Captain who saved thousands of lives by maneuvering the crippled ship to shallow water.
