It is hard to explain how intense the heat is from a fire that size. I have been a fireman in the US (Texas) for almost 25 years, and have only had to go up against a fire that size maybe twice. I have never encountered a scene with that many deaths and horrific injuries. I pray I never do. God bless them all, those who made it, those who didn't.
That fire took hold in less than 4 mins. Not much time to get several thousand people out. Also, most of the folks who died were trapped in the corridor at the back of the stadium, where most of the turnstiles and doors were locked. Absolute tragedy. Remember it well.
@bbnnsince1981 The fire exits where blocked and you can see people had to climb over fences and stuff.. Imagine your grandpa or a 5 year old trying to climb a 2 meter high wall. Just can not be done...
Hopefully such tragedy will not happen ever again!
That's truly amazing. I can't begin to imagine what that would be like.
A few years back the Melbourne cricket ground big screen caught fire. This stadium fits 100,000 people so if the fire spread it would have been one of the worst disasters of all time. Luckily they were able to get peoe away from the fire and control it before it spread. Very very lucky.
I am a Liverpool surrporter and we all stand together in English football tragadys. God rest their souls the 56 who died at valley parade and the 96 at hilsbough.
So Sad. I was 17 and saw it live on TV. I remember during the original BBC footage that that there was an old man's shape (maybe old womean) just seen sitting in his seat engulfed in flames. Probably just too old to get out and killed almost in an instant as the flames billowed downwind. Gruesome. Most of the poor people who perished died jammed at the rear of the stand covered in burning molten roof tar. Terry Yorath, Trevor Cherry and the players were brilliant afterwards.
Wow, first time seeing this since watching this on TV in Bolton when I was 10 years old. Will never ever forget what I witnessed that sad day. I didn't remember that many people died. Live in Canada now.
Wow, I'm an American who didn't follow soccer at the time(I was 15) but my goodness I remember this....CNN and all the other big news networks had this video going all day long. It was stunning how quickly that fire moved through the grandstand. We take for granted here that we'll be safe and sound at a sporting even here...25 years later, still very sobering to watch. Oh, and I pay attention to football now. Hi! Ho! Wolverhampton!
A terrifying reminder of how quickly a fire can spread (The Station nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA is another). You could see the fire flickering at the 15:44:12 mark of this video, at which time perhaps one fire extinguisher could have made all the difference (a spectator did go to the back of the stands to look for one but none was present). RIP, of course.
I remember watching this live on TV, I was 17 years old and could not believe what was happening, one of the things that I have remembered to this day is the sight of the man engulfed in flames and the commentator saying "poor man, he only came to watch a game of football". RIP all those who were tragically taken
bradford fire brigade who were watching this football match turned themselves out to the fire without waiting for the 999 call which you have to do by law so a brilliant job by them.my dad was a lancashire county fireman who went on to be an A.D.O in the fire service i thought i would share this with you all

Thank god this will never happen again because of this and heizel and hillsborough. However i regularly go to old trafford and i not sure nearly 80.000 people are ever safe in one place!?!? The recent stampede on quite crap game b4 world cup proves that. Just continue to support as we will cos we love football. RIP you guys and i am sure those celebrating have lived with it more that others. Would be nice for one of them to own up n put a post on here? Just tell us how bad you feel?
Incredible how people there did not seem to realize what was happening.. chanting and jumping in front of cameras... But I don't blame them... I guess it was not apparent how quickly the fire spread and that there were still people stuck in there... :-/ It's easy for us to comment on it knowing the result.
Fucking hell I remember watching that ive at the time on Grandstand - watching that gain makes me weep - I was also at Hillsborough, but this is just as bad
So, so shocking to see those scenes, and how quickly did that bloody fire move
So,so sad. I cannot imagine a more terrible way to die. The only very, very small crumb of comfort to come out of Bradford and Hillsborough is that the arseholes in the FA and government finally upgraded the shitholes and death traps that they called football grounds to the grounds we see today. Animals were treated better than football fans in the 70's and 80's. RIP the 56. From a Sheff Utd fan and fellow proud Yorkshireman.
To all those arseholes who waved and sang and were to busy getting their faces in front of the camera to help. I hope you live a long life and live with your guilt eating away at you, and when you die that it's also painful and slow.
Nothing you can say but RIP. I bet them chaps seen celebrating have and are regretting it still to this day but doesn't mean they don't care. They just didn't realise the magnitude of what was happening. That doesn't matter though. Is a shame though that this and hillsborough had to happen before our stadiums were made safe. God Bless you all.
25 years on and still as sad to me today as when I saw it on the news that day (CNN here in the USA).
I don't envy the job the police have to do at any football game. They're usually in a lose-lose situation. But on May 11, 1985, they seized on a rare opportunity to show their true heroism. No hooligans, no pitch invasions, just a horrifying disaster, and their absolute sense of mission to save people at great peril to themselves.
I remember the dead today, and I remember the heroes.
so many idiots still singing and shouting, and celebrating instead of helping, and clearing the staduim !..... they should be so ashamed of themselves... REMEMBERING TO DAY THE 56 FALLEN FANS, and everyone who tried to help, RIP xxxxx
I'm a Charlton fan....just wanted to say that however much we have rivalry in football, NOTHING is more important than genuine safety of the fans. RIP those that lost their lives.
I'm a Huddersfield Town fan - I have never seen the original footage - it was horrific and very sad, it brought tears to my eyes - I hope to never see anything like that again. God bless to the 56 and rest in peace.

First time i have seen the footage in full and it brings shivers down my spine, a lump in my throat and tears to my eyes. What an absolute tragedy. RIP to the 56 who so tragically lost their lives.
Sorry but the flood lights blowing over made me laugh.. but fucking hell :| i knew about this disaster.. but i have never seen footage. abosulte madness how quickly it went up..feel for anyone caught up in this:(
Horrific stuff. No football fan, should forget the 56 lost in this tragedy. Regardless of what team you support, this wasn't anything to do with football.
@natykegs It was all the result of a discarded cigarette. It fell through a hole in the floor of the stand, and onto a pile of rubbish underneath. Unbeleivable.
If I remember correctly from reading an article, the fire was caused by a discarded burning cigarette which fell through a crack in the old wooden bleachers and into a pile of trash that had sat underneath the stands for years.
remember this well. truly horrific.does anyone know if the man on fire at the end survived. realy heroic efforts on the part of the police. RIP to all those who didnt survive and sincere condolences to their families and friends.from a Port Vale Supporter.
This truly was a tragic day. RIP all those who died 25 years ago.
With regards to the idiots cheering, chances are they were drunk & didn't know at that time people were dying. It's not an excuse but you can hear that once the fans realised people were dying the singing & chanting stopped. I don't think anyone could imagine fans dying at a football match.
Police & fans who helped save lives more than made up for the mindless few who were celebrating. If not for those far more would have died.
Im a Chelsea fan but football doesnt matter when you see something as horrific as this....my thoghts and condolences go out to all the friends and families who lost loved ones
To previous comments, don't you think the people who were jumping and cheering, will not regret that for the rest of their lives? They couldn't have imagined the horror that was to happen. I was only 2 when this happened, but my dad and his friends were there and I've been a life long city fan. I'm wearing my "twentyfive years remember" tshirt in aid of bradford burns unit.
I would like to say thank you to the people and police etc who tried to much to help! Lets hope it never happens again!
Yesssss! Our stadium is on fire, many people are going to die, what a joy! Let's celebrate, lets sing! Some of the people on the pitch should be ashamed of themselves, pure scum... 4:15, for example
@295mfk you complete pratt, at the time no knew what was really happening. during the hillsbrough disaster people thought it was a riot/pitch invasion.
once is was completely out of control at bradford then they realised.
you fucking knob stop trying to make people look bad.
@mariasmith249 "At the time no one knew what was really happening" what?! Are you on drugs on something?! I think the fact that the WHOLE stand was on fire was a pretty good sign that something VERY BAD was happening, especially considering that it only took 4 minutes, check 4:15, waving to the camera while THEIR team's stadium was on fire, so go fuck yourself! "No one knew" Yeah, right, the fire was invisible...
@295mfk Yeah those guys at 4:15 were grown men. I can't see an excuse other than alcohol, but who am I to know. It looks to me like the rest of the fans acting up for the camera were young boys, and boys get worked up and crazy with any stimulus, let alone a fire of this magnitude. They needed some adult supervision and context. Kids don't always think of people dying, or what it means emotionally when people die like that. I hope they also caught a glimpse of the heroism around them that day.
One of the worst disasters in football history, and it could have been much worse. Football grounds at that time were often horrendously neglected in terms of safety, many stands had not been updated since they were built before WWI and this was no exception (built in 1911). The club were planning to replace the stand during the 1985 off season but for 56 people, one match too many had been played there. RIP, and had it not been for the brave police it could have been a lot worse.
Next week it is going to be 25 years since the disaster, everyone who lives in Bradford or the towns and villages that surround it knew someone who was killed or injured that day. I'm Leeds forever, but my thoughts will be with the Bradford families on the 11th.
The man burning towards the end of the video unfortunately did not survive. The sickest thing about htis horrific day, is the persistent chanting and waving into the TV camera by the hooligan element. People are dying all around them and they think it's time for bravado. Absolute scum.
R.I.P to all those who lost their lives on that tragic day. I remember watching this match on T.v with my dad. Still brings a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye now.
Those brave, brave policemen. Some of England's finest.
The poor commentator as well... having to watch and report what he saw.
I actually saw this tape as part of fire safety training; it demonstrates how quickly fire spreads. A lot of people in the affected stand watched the flames to their left to begin with, thinking they were safe - not realising that the fire had already spread to the area beneath them, cutting off their escape. Rest in peace, innocent victims. x
Fully agreed, smashing job from the coppers, risking life and limb to save every life they could, the fans too in the end saving just anyone, 56 died but look at the lives that were saved, truly remarkable!
Certainly brings it all back, as horific today as it was at the time! I remember attending a tribute game at Elland Road to help raise funds for the disaster victims. God bless all that perished and those who mourn them 25 years on.
It's trerrifying how quickly that spread. Testiment to all those who helped others, risking their own safety to do so. As another stated it is down to their heroics that more lives were not lost. RIP to all those who lost their lives that terrible day.
Every year I have to give a class about health and safety. Generally, I get a lot of disinterest in the matter from the students. Then I show one of the versions of this, and I get silence and enthusiastic interest.
56 lives were lost that day. Nothing can replace them. I hope that this tragedy can help some people to pay closer attention to fire safety and some lives be saved.
RIP from St Paul, Minnesota, USA. I saw this on the news when it happened. I was 18, and it horrified me. They played the whole video. Very brave rescue work by the police and many fans (and some athletes, as I understand), many lives saved. This fire should have killed a LOT more people. Bravo to those courageous rescuers who kept going back to help more people, suffering burns and inhaling the burning air and smoke, burning tar raining down on them. Cheers to them, condolences for the fallen.
@dcs002 thats a very kind remark from america and im sure it means a great deal to all those affected by what was a great tragedy in our nation. and i second your comments. kudos to the police for their efforts
Not trying to be ignorant but whats the big deal? It was was just one stand of a small stadium, and no fatalities?

how did it start??
natykegs 1 year ago
@natykegs It was all the result of a discarded cigarette. It fell through a hole in the floor of the stand, and onto a pile of rubbish underneath. Unbeleivable.
RIP.
athull08 1 year ago
If I remember correctly from reading an article, the fire was caused by a discarded burning cigarette which fell through a crack in the old wooden bleachers and into a pile of trash that had sat underneath the stands for years.

295mfk 1 year ago
@295mfk you complete pratt, at the time no knew what was really happening. during the hillsbrough disaster people thought it was a riot/pitch invasion.
once is was completely out of control at bradford then they realised.
you fucking knob stop trying to make people look bad.
mariasmith249 1 year ago
@mariasmith249 "At the time no one knew what was really happening" what?! Are you on drugs on something?! I think the fact that the WHOLE stand was on fire was a pretty good sign that something VERY BAD was happening, especially considering that it only took 4 minutes, check 4:15, waving to the camera while THEIR team's stadium was on fire, so go fuck yourself! "No one knew" Yeah, right, the fire was invisible...
295mfk 1 year ago

Rest in peace, innocent victims. x
