Christ people.... It is considered proper etiquette to bow low when greeting a member of the imperial family. Its in the same category as the etiquette for greeting the British royal family or a religious figurehead; there is nothing submissive about it, it is just a sign of respect and good manners (side note, longest running dynasty in human history, I'd say a bow seems appropriate).
