I've never been in an American Subway Car but the ones on the Paris Metro were about the same. One thing that might have mislead you is the fact that I was using a very wide angle lens. Thanks for looking.
Those are the sub-surface trains, the tube cars are MUCH smaller, and they have rounded roofs so anyone is tall and stands at the edge has their head sticking out of the doors when the train is in a station.

Wide camera lens, indeed. The subway cars are not as wide as they appear in this video, and the tube is hardly ever that empty.

They(tube cars) appear to be wider than an american subway car.
