You have somehow cut all the movements in the worst possible places FOUR times. Nevertheless, an excellent performance that deserves more recognition then it currently receives.
What more can you say except the ORIGINAL Shostakovich interpretation? What's even more amazing is that Oistrakh does not play the Shostakovich the same way/same tempo for any two performances. That's what I love about his playing...it's so technically satisfying, yet, musically, it seems it is as if he is bringing forth very raw, pure, and in-the-moment emotions! nothing seems manufactured...all the music seems to flow out of his soul in the present. Bravo, Maestro Oistrakh!
Oistrakh is perfect, a hero of violin..but, i listened to Braunstein playing this concerto with berliner philarmoniker (avaible on youtube), and i found him more interesting. braunstein is less serious, he kind of jokes while playing, which suits better, in my opinion, to the character of this 4th movement ("burlesque")!
This is breathtaking! I will be watching Sarah Chang try to pull this off tomorrow night at SPAC with the Philadelphia Orchestra. My fingers will be crossed for her!
@greenfuse0 How was that performance? I read a review of it online and it said she was outstanding. I saw her perform the Shostakovich live as well, and it as, although different from Oistrakh, just as musically moving. She actually performed last summer in Aspen with Shostakovich to glowing reviews. To me, Sarah and the Shostakovich are a great combination...technically, but more importantly, musically, amazing.
strange how audiences have changed over the years. When hahn finishes, the audience storms in applause but when oistrakh finishes the applause is much more conservative. hahns performance is very good but doesnt come half as close to oistrakh.
@honron21 very VERY true. It seems like they all want to sound perfect. In doing so, they lack the colour that was inherent of the great maestros of the past who just wanted to express their own interpretation of any given piece. Since Gitlis is still alive, I will give him the honour he deserves (though some many argue). No one can deny that his playing is unique and has a colour all his own. For that, he deserves a legendary title in my books.
@garrrynec I am agree with you but I would like to add that the great maestros of the past didn`t want to express their own interpretation just for to be original (vanity) as the new generations do, the great maestros express their own interpretations because they do have their own one, new generations don`t have it then they do any thing just with the aim to be original and different and the result is mere shit.

Probably the most exciting 7 minutes of violin music ever. Oistrakh's performance thrills me as much at the age of 63 as it did at the age of 10.
