It's not about weapons. The police needed to move the protestors back the only practical way to do that was by force. They couldn't verbally persuade the protestors and did not have the facilities to incarcerate all of them.

In Chico the protester trashed a park that the homeless people slept in and made the cops kick them out because they got blamed for it and the protesters didn't do anything to stop it. It's not about weapons. The police needed to move the protestors back the only practical way to do that was by force. They couldn't verbally persuade the protestors and did not have the facilities to incarcerate all of them.
The minimum necessary amount of force in this case consisted of baton thrusts to the abdomen.

Funny though how the state managed to find $40 million to fund the CA Dream Act in the midst of the largest public college budget cut in recent history.. first off... i really could care less about why the protestors are there... but that "cop" that hit that woman... reguardless of what they were saying was completely uncalled for... none of the protestors were doing anything physically threatening. i would be suing their asses off for resorting to violence like that...
