You are correct. This is a violation of any field's minimum engagement distance, but it happens. Most documented eye injuries occured at short range (Kratz A - Am J Ophthalmol - 01-JAN-2010; 149(1): 37-44). One incident occured within 4 feet at a Fort Ord game. It is documented in NAM magazine, issue 11. These injuries should never happen. Using gear that can take a close hit is the way to prevent the most common serious eye injuries
hmmm well Classic Army is a Hong Kong brand, and over here our guns are limited to 2 joules, anything over that is illegal and considered a firearm.
Also, there are many sites here that enforce a lower limit... However, you are right these glasses are pretty shit..... just like a lot of Classic Army stuff =/
USE GOGGLES. I wanted to be a Navy SEAL when i got out of highschool in a year. So much for that. 2 months ago i got shot from 5 feet away with a kwa. We werent having a war, just shooting a tree, so we didnt wear goggles. My friend turned around, waved his gun and said "lets go inside". All i heard was "POP". And from that point on ive been through a bunch of crap. I went from 20/15 in my left eye to 20/100 at the best. I beg you, wear your goggles.WEAR THEM!
Whilst I only use high quality goggles, this is a bit OTT, especially for UK as most skirmishes are 328fps with 0.2g, so 500+ with 0.43g is ridiculous and not worth even doing. But I do realise this is USA, whats the common fps over there?
We have games allowing that speed with 0.43 gm bb's. Even with rules about engagement distances there have been point-blank hits in games at two locations in my state. This should never happen, but I want players to know what products can take this kind of energy if they choose to protect themselves from this possibility.
@SmallxTaylor Accidents still happen, even when you're following the rules. I got shot in the lip at ~5 feet by a rifle when I surprised a guy who didn't have his pistol ready. I'm lucky my teeth were ok, but it could have been a lot worse.
I just did some testing of the 3M Sporties using an 800 fps pellet gun. I hope you can use my video as response. Very impressive results from inexpensive safety glasses.

@auburnmedicalgroup tell me, who uses a gun that shoots at 550 fps? thats abnormally fast. In a realitstic situation, a gun shouldnt be firing over 400 fps. Also, your shoot at, what looks like, a foot rather than 4 feet. This is the EXTREME of everything, extreme range, extreme velocities, etc. If you insist on testing them under these conditions, i recommend doing another test with more realistic dimensions like 350-400 fps and 5-10 feet. that would be much more helpful in my opinion

Shooting glasses are perfectly safe, the gun you used to shoot these glasses, hits with 5 times the amount of joules a normal upgraded aeg would hit with. For instance, in order to simulate what happened, a fully upgraded VSR would have to shoot me a point blank range in the eye. id like to see results at 5 m, 10m and 20m. That said oakleys can take a shotgun blast so clearly theres better quality shooting glasses out there. Keep up the interesting work.
It looks like the Save Phace Masks would be a good alternative to the JT's as well. But those Iron Faces, and Bitter Ends look like they could fulfill the roll of great face protection.
Yeah, I can see how the visibility would be an issue, probably better to just get a good pair of goggles, and they might have a separate face shield that can cover the mouth.
I am doing testing on two products you might be interested in. The Hakkotsu Iron Face and the Bitter End lower face masks. The Hakkotsu Iron Face has already arrived, and I have played with it. It only costs about $10. I have not yet tested it or the accompanying X-Eye goggles to see if they can take a direct hit. I have found that the Hakkotsu Iron Face fits very nicely with the ESS Profile.
I would think that it would protect against eye trauma better than either one alone. I have a concern about visibility with the combination. There is a theoretical rincrease of isk of collision or falling in a hole with the mesh masks. The decreased visibility is compounded by wearing both together. I don't anticipate testing combinations of items in the near future because it is so much easier and possibly safer to wear just a single item.
Those are shooting glasses, you're not meant to be shot at with them on

Also id say that Shooting with snipers at close range is usually not recommended and some times also against the rules.

This is what people need to see. They need to see this and be aware of the risk.
People with shooting glasses, or workshop/wood shop glasses...these just arn't safe.
I love these videos. I'm adding it to my list of faves. 5 stars as well
