no-one can argue about rugby and football, in rugby u have several atempts to make the 100 meters so they can aford to give up some meters when they takle, however in football (NFL) u have 4 goes to make 10 yards, which means u have to stop them dead were they are, hence why they hit harder and because of this we have to wear pads. Back in the 1800's both Football and Rugby were more brutal. Both sports took measures for safety. Rugby got rid of obstruction and set up rigid rules for tackling. Football was based on obstruction, the tactics of blocking is what the game is about. So the Americans couldn't just outlaw the majority of contact like Rugby. So the Americans kept the brutal game but added gear.
