Get a houndoom by catching a houndour on Route 214, Valor lakefront, or the spring path. As for a grass type, roselia is always good, since you can get the stone (dawn stone i think?) that makes it a roserade which is a pretty decent pokemon.

Many people choose chimchar as a starter, and monferno is the worst option to use on the first team:

MONFERNO- mach punch (physical)

PRINPLUP- bubble/bubble beam (special)

TURTWIG- absorb (special)

and rock types have a high defense stat, so mach punch is the worst option to use. Also, roark's geodude and onix are rock/ground type, so water/grass type attacks will make x4 damage
