@ochs42thethird "Highest amount of G-forces EVER RECORDED, at 214 G's. How the hell did he survive?" Because the figure is probably not accurate. Firstly G is not a force, it is an acceleration. It can even be a vector. Secondly, those who say that it was only for a few thousandths of a second don't understand G. An impact has high G because it lasts a very short time. That's why it can kill you. G is a time-based phenomenon.

You fall off a building and experience a deceleration of 200G when you hit the ground The impact is over very quickly but you're dead.
I was at this race...in fact I was watching this group of cars through my binoculars when the crash happened. Most everyone in the stands near where I was sitting thought Brack was dead.
this was one of 'those' accidents, when at the time it was an almost certainty he was dead. I couldn't believe first of all, that he survived without a brain injury, due to the horrendus G-loading he must have been subjected to.
why do the cars not race on a normal racetrack with run-off areas etc - a brick wall and cheese grating fence on the edge of the track is not the brightest idea....
Indycars race on 3 types of tracks. Ovals like the one above, Street tracks (like monaco) and Road course's (like F1)
It is very rare that a car hits the catch fence, 2 in the IRL's 14 year history. The catch fence being there to keep the 50,000+ fans, safe. Usually they hit the SAFER barrier rather than the fence. the fence is just there to keep everything in the bullring
+ run of areas are stupid. it is a get-out-of-jail-free-card. it doesn't show a true drivers talent.
Kimi Raikkonen - Hockenheimring 2004. Rear wing failed on a high speed corner. Without run of area he surely would have had injuries. Thanks to run off, he walked away unhurt.
I hate these fucking cars and this is the reason why. These IRL cars carry so much downforce that the drivers run the risk of getting flipped like this whenever contact is made with another car or having their back break as soon as they hit the wall. I really wish Champ Car could have bought out IRL instead of the other way around. These IRL cars do provide some ok racing sometimes, but Champ Car was so much better and so much safer.
that's just horse***t.. what you had here was and open-wheel momentum action. it has NOTHING to do with downforce. take any to open wheel cars and contact like that and the natural action of the wheel on wheel will launch one into the air. Now add champcar's turbo-boosted cars, and you have a car that couldn't even run on this track
@ParagonB Correct. CART attempted a race here, but it was canceled after they ruled it unsafe after the qualifying session because of average speeds they never saw before.
A human body can survive about 15g. In f1 u have like 5g on u and flight pilots can handle 10g. the only reason why they can be in like 214g is that it is a short amount of time. that's the reason why he did survive.
There is a huge difference between vertical and lateral G's. THe figures you give about tunnel vision and blackout only concern vertical G's. Racing drivers only experience lateral G's.
G forces could have killed him, or even one of the cables could have cut his cockpit for the middle or even something worse that I don't dare to say :S
Anyway, Bräck and Tomas Scheckter touched wheels, sending Bräck into the air at 200+ mph, hitting a steel support beam for the catch fencing. According to Bräck's site his car recorded 214 g.
This crash was the highest shock, measured at 214 G's ever survived by a human. People have been easily killed by half that. And about the car, it doesn't matter so much what it was made of, or even how the fence was configured. The car is designed to break apart like that, pretty much just leaving the carbon fiber 'coccoon' of the driver cockpit. Even with all of the technology & safety features, no feature can alleviate the shock (G force) associated with 200+mph to almost zero, fortunate man!
the stupid thing is that this was part the IRL's fault because they set up the catch fencing inside out, I don't know how that happened, so when Bracks car hit the steel hooked on the car and shredded it to pieces
I'm american and I know it is Brack, not Breck. I was wondering why Kenny wasn'y in the IRL anymore. Man I saw this man WIN the target 400 at CHICAGO MOTOR SPEEDWAY, which was closed 2 years after that race. Man I wish his career never ended that way. GOD BLESS YOU KENNY!!!

???? He survived this wreck. Anyone would have had severe injuries no matter what the car was. The fact that he's up and about now is a testament to how far we've come safety-wise. Wall is different. I respect your view, but I think IndyCars have been fairly safe...especially in the last 5-6 years since they finally got the gearbox situation taken care of.

IndyCars may be safer now, but F1's are ultimately crash tested
nixxxon18 3 years ago
3 weeks after, actually
dario272 3 years ago
IRL are the leadings in safety. IRL will test it, F1 will use it years later.
+ the reason why the car shatters into a million pieces is because its made of carbon fibre. this also absorts the impact.
+ kubica crash wasn't at 200mph. his car didn't get caught in the crash fence which virtually shreaded Bracks car.
if a IRL car hit a concrete wall it would look like kubica's car did.
