I studied reheading in India and Nepal I have been playing and repairing for about 15 yrs., and Shisham is the name for rosewood, good info here, though.
When he says the other wood is Shisham as opposed to Rosewood, he is wrong. Shisham IS the term for Rosewood, so the first black Rosewood drum he shows is also the Shisham wood. Some times Shisham is spelt Sisam, or Sisham but as far as English name that is same as Rosewood. I grew up in India, and I play and fix tabla, so I know my tabla wood names.
@parimalguy You are correct both styles of wood are known as Shisham though for all practical purposes they are very different woods. In the west what we mean when we say Indian Rosewood is the black Shisham, and not the lighter wood that is usually found in tablas from Kolkata.
Really great video, I've been reheading tablas for 4 years myself and really appreciate all the information presented here. Thank you. :) when talking about the different kinds of shells and pudhis, one should keep in mind that other kinds of tablas do exist, it is not limited to only either Bombay or Calcutta styles ( although these are the most popular)
For example, Pakistani style tablas are quite different than either of these, they are much lighter, taller and the syahi is constructed differently. Ustad Tari Khan or Qawwali players like Ustad Dildar Hussain play on this style of tabla.
Some people prefer to soak the strap ( baddi ) in water, a few hours before using it, so it's softer to handle. Be careful as the strap dries out and it shrinks - effectively tightening the Pudi even more!
The cross braiding ( e.g. on Calcutta Pudis ) 'can' help to keep the Gajra strips 'close together' and 'can' avoid the Gajra from hanging too low from the Kinar. I say, 'can', as a lot really depends on the quality of leather used for the cross braiding.
um can i use a 300 lb steel ring for as a kundal so this way it you wouldnt have to worry about the kundal being loose

Dude u shud never press the syahi, or the black spot. It might loosen the black spot.
