im not a surfer but a bodyboarder, we are all wave riders and love the ocean, we share something a lot of people dont and that taking a ride with mother nature, being "under the curtain" is an out of body experience

I dont surf so dont really no, but would imagine its so difficult to balance yourself on a board with only one arm. Thats after you have the amazing courage to actually get back in!! How bout staying in the waters of So Cal? I surfed So Cal for over 20 years and never once heard of or knew of a surfer running into a shark. . it just did not happen. Funny how I know a few other surfers/bodyboarders who got their limbs taken off from sharks and still got #1 national rankings and in the top 5 in international rankings but in a different time, they did not get as much exposer and she did.

Mike Coots a pro bodyboarder from the 90's got his leg ripped off by a shark, 2 years later he was winning national championships easily. Hoki Aki pro bodyboarder from Hawaii, also lost his leg from a shark attack came back the next year and won state championship.

All I'm simply asking is why did she get so much exposure while other people who accomplished the same thing and have done more in the surfing world did not get any exposure and were blanked out from the media while at the same time doing more for the surfing community. It just boggles my mind knowing that these people that got their legs and arms bitten off from a shark, got world titles and went unnoticed while Bethany did not capture a world title but is worldly known. You haven't named any surfer who's done as well as her. If your problem is why don't bodyboarders get as much exposure as surfers then there are far better places to air it. 2. I can pop up with one arm, but I don't plan on ever surfing fully with one arm unless a shark rips it off.

as a surfer, I think bethany is quite amazing ( and nice looking) she is very courageous to stick with a sport that really requires to good arms and yet she does better than most with one arm. like a sprinter winner races with just one leg. only in the water, to have just one arm can be dangerous. and yet she is out there without any self conciousness and still playing !

I lived on Honolulu Hawaii and was a surfer.
I was bit by a shark.
My bite wasn't as bad as Bethany's, But I think she's a cool and brave and head stong young woman.
She should be looked up to.
Not made fun or cursed at.

Just can't understand why you're having a go at her, she got her arm ripped off when she was a little kid and it was all over the news worldwide, so of course people are gonna think it's great she's done so well and be interested in her story, and I'm sure she wouldn't say all the sharks should be culled out of the ocean they live in... Should imagine the fact she's a woman in a predominantly male sport is probably another reason for the exposure... what's your problem?

How bout staying in the waters of So Cal? I surfed So Cal for over 20 years and never once heard of or knew of a surfer running into a shark. . it just did not happen. Yes I am aware of the recent attack North of San Diego. Maybe things are changing - but for the time I was active we never had the thought of sharks on our minds. Maybe an oceanographer can explain!

rodney mcullin lost his arm from a shark attack in 2003 and 4 months later he was winning contests in austrailia..dude I could name DOZENS more but that would just prove my point even more. Shark attacks are not remote you damn fool...just yesterday there was a fucking shark attack 4 miles from my house. Shark attacks and deaths are rare... and if you're in the ocean so much (with shark attacks happening just down the road) why are you slating Bethany for pursuing a surfing career after an attack then and calling her stupid? Funny how I know a few other surfers/bodyboarders who got their limbs taken off from sharks and still got #1 national rankings and in the top 5 in international rankings but in a different time, they did not get as much exposer and she did.

i respect her...i also respect the many other victims who did the same exact thing but they did not get as much exposer and she did..There are tons and tons of soul surfers that i respect. She doesn't really crack the surface of my top 50 soul surfers that i respect because there are way too many that came before her.

Okay there's alot but I'll name the ones that come off the top of my head and buddy let me tell you they fucking rip just as hard. Mike Coots a pro bodyboarder from the 90's got his leg ripped off by a shark, 2 years later he was winning national championships easily. Hoki Aki pro bodyboarder from Hawaii, also lost his leg from a shark attack came back the next year and won state championship.

I could name tons and tons of more surfers / bodyboarders that went through the same exact thing as her and progressed further than she did but I'd rather not waste my time giving you names and accomplishments by them. I'd rather just tell you that her incident is not a remote one, there have been others before her who's done the same exact thing and some have even gone further.

All I'm simply asking is why did she get so much exposure while other people who accomplished the same thing and have done more in the surfing world did not get any exposure and were blanked out from the media while at the same time doing more for the surfing community. It just boggles my mind knowing that these people that got their legs and arms bitten off from a shark, got world titles and went unnoticed while Bethany did not capture a world title but is worldly known. I don't understand it.

You haven't named any surfer who's done as well as her. If your problem is why don't bodyboarders get as much exposure as surfers then there are far better places to air it. If you start off by calling someone names who most people admire and respect you're gonna get it back... and yes, people do get attacked by sharks, but billions of surfers don't, so it is rare, and of course there are places in the world where it's a helluva lot more likely like SA... but credit to Bethany it didn't stop her
